His Majesty's Dragon
His Majesty's Dragon: A Novel of Temeraire | Naomi Novik
Aerial combat brings a thrilling new dimension to the Napoleonic Wars as valiant warriors rise to Britains defense by taking to the skies . . . not aboard aircraft but atop the mighty backs of fighting dragons. When HMS Reliant captures a French frigate and seizes its precious cargo, an unhatched dragon egg, fate sweeps Capt. Will Laurence from his seafaring life into an uncertain futureand an unexpected kinship with a most extraordinary creature. Thrust into the rarified world of the Aerial Corps as master of the dragon Temeraire, he will face a crash course in the daring tactics of airborne battle. For as Frances own dragon-borne forces rally to breach British soil in Bonapartes boldest gambit, Laurence and Temeraire must soar into their own baptism of fire. From the Paperback edition.

I adored the dragons in this 😍!!! The main character had a very battle mindset that made him narrative a bit boring for me, but I still liked his character. Overall the story was fun and I can't wait to pick up the next one!

This was a emotional and wonderful journey. I loved seeing the friendships blossom and Laurence and Termeraire learn more about themselves and the Corps.
This was a near five star for me. The only reason it‘s not is because I got lost in the descriptions sometimes. But it was a worthy read!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

3.5/5 stars

This was a fun read and great for fans of political intrigue. The dragons were adorable but I recommend getting the print version of this so you can reference the different types of dragons because it does get confusing. The book can be slow at times but I‘ve heard good things about this series so I definitely will continue.

Studying the Napoleonic Wars helped while reading this novel. The world building and the action scenes increased my enjoyment and I have a feeling that continuing with the series will help build my appreciation. Right now, I‘ll give this a 3.5/4 out of 5 ⭐️ but I am eager to see what the next novel in the series brings. I suspect I‘ll like it even more!! Sometimes that‘s how I am with multibook series. Wish we had an option between pick and so-so!

Thanks for the tag, @Dragon ! Let‘s see if I do all of this right...

1. Naomi Novik‘s Temeraire series. The Napoleonic Wars retold with an aerial corps of dragons!
2. Each of the first few books takes place on a different continent or so, I think I‘ll take China/Asia. Pavilions!
3. Australia, I think, I get grumpy in the heat.
4. Anyone who wants to do this!

As an adult, I enjoyed this book meant for kids. It‘s the Napoleonic Wars but with dragons. A navel Captain captures a ship with a dragon egg onboard. Dragons bond immediately to a person so they try to make it back to England before the egg hatches – that doesn‘t happen & before the Capt. knows it he is in the Aerial Corps. Temeraire is endearing as he learns about the world and the bond between he and the Capt. develops. Many teary moments.

Reminiscent of 'The Dragonriders of Pern' and 'Master and Commander,' this alt-history adventure tale features dragons and the Napoleonic Wars from England's side. This first-in-series introduces us to the dragon, Temeraire and his harnesser, Laurence. Shot through with sea- and aerial combat, humor and sentimentality, the author expertly also conveys the repressed British psyche, so much so that she manages to kill the thrills. Felt plodding :-/

I couldn't resist the premise: what if during the Napoleonic Wars there were battles with dragons? The character Laurence wasn't that likeable in the beginning, but his dragon Temeraire was. I was a sceptical, talking dragons sounded too much like a fairytale, but later I was teary-eyed when something happened to one of the dragons.
It's the first book in a series and my library has them all 😀

Book 6 for the #SFFTBRChallenge.

Melissa_J I love Napoleonic era reads, and I love the fantasy genre, but I just couldn‘t wrap my head around dragons fighting in the Napoleonic Wars so didn‘t continue with the series. 1y
DuckOfDoom I really liked the book, but at first I was really sceptical about the setting. It worked for me, though 😀 1y
PickwickPlockPlock @Melissa_J @DuckOfDoom It's fun as long as I don't think too much about it, I mean, feeding an army is hard enough, but feeding dragons during a war? Or dragons landing on pontons? I'll stop thinking about it right now 🙈 1y

This is the best new to me dragon story I‘ve read in a while. My favorite aspects were all about the characterization, dragon and human, as well as one character to violently dislike. I definitely enjoyed the first half of the book more than the battle focused later portion, but it‘s hard to explain why except that maybe I can‘t quite accept this alternate history perspective.

DebReads4fun One of my favorite books! 1y
Daisey @DebReads4fun I really enjoyed it! Have you read the whole series? Does it continue well? 1y
DebReads4fun @Daisey I have read the first one. I need to jump back into that series. 1y

JazzFeathers I had the same feeling: loved the first half, dislike the second. But l know why. The second half of the book was a total mess. The author clearly didn't know enough about the Napoleonic Wars to base a story on it. She went with random facts and no global vision. And since l too know nothing about the Napoleonic Wars, l couldn't follow. There's a reason why you need to know your history if you write history inspired stories. 1y
Daisey @JazzFeathers That actually fits well with my difficulties. I know just a bit about the Napoleonic wars and I couldn‘t make this alternate history perspective blend appropriately with that knowledge. Whenever the real world aspects were mentioned it pulled me out of the story a bit and I kind of wished it was taking place in its own world only similar to that time and place. 1y
Nute I wasn‘t going to read this series, but I think that I might be changing my mind. I love dragon stories. I can be forgiving of the misrepresentation of the Napoleonic Wars history especially since it‘s an alternative perspective. 1y
Daisey @Nute The dragon aspect is fantastic and well worth the read. I don't even know that I would call the war aspect misrepresentation, as just not strong enough to really be an alternate history, so in effect it was distracting to me. 1y
Nute It sounds worth a try. Thanks for the clarification. 1y

“. . . after supper Laurence would go to sit outside and read to him by the light of a lantern. He had never been much of a reader himself, but Temeraire‘s pleasure in books was so great as to be infectious, and Laurence could not but think with satisfaction of the dragon‘s likely delight in the new book . . .”

I love the idea behind this book. Flight crews for dragons, not just one rider. The story is excellent. The audio book is good but I am not a fan of the narrator's "dragon" voices, though I suppose it would be difficult for most normal people to produce a voice suitable for the grandeur of a dragon.
