Postcards From the Edge
Postcards From the Edge | Carrie Fisher
When we first meet the extraordinary young actress Suzanne Vale, she's feeling like 'something on the bottom of someone's shoe, and not even someone interesting.' Suzanne is in the harrowing and hilarious throes of drug rehabilitation, trying to understand what happened to her life and how she managed to land in a 'drug hospital.' Just as Fisher's first film role-the precocious teenager in Shampoo-echoed her own Beverly Hills upbringing, her first book is set within the world she knows better than anyone else: Hollywood. More of a fiction montage than a novel in the conventional sense, this stunning literary debut chronicles Suzanne's vivid, excruciatingly funny experiences - from the clinic to her coming to terms with life in the outside world. Conversations with her psychiatrist 'What worries me is, what if this guy is really the one for me and I haven't had enough therapy to be comfortable with having found him?'; a high-concept, eighties-style affair 'The only way to become intimate for me is repeated exposure. My route to intimacy is routine. I establish a pattern with somebody and then I notice when they're not there?' Sparked by Suzanne's and Carrie Fisher's deliciously wry sense of the absurd, Postcards from the Edgeis more than a book about stardom and drugs. It is a revealing look at the dangers - and delights - of all our addictions, from money and success to sex and insecurity.

Seventh #24in48 book down and just 2 more hours to go 🤪 I love Carrie Fisher and I had been meaning to read this semi-autobiographical novel. It‘s so interesting to had 80s Hollywood woven in!

I've declared this a paperback summer (apart from my library holds over which I have no control). Took this to the beach and enjoyed it. I read this a looooong time ago (saw the movie, too, but have little memory of it- looks like the two are fairly different). Towards the end, the book felt a little too quippy/clever (one liner after one liner), but they're all very good, and such a great first novel. Great light read.

cathipink Purchased at one of my fave used bookstores in town, which is perfectly nestled between some of my son's fave record stores 🙂 5mo

Maybe I shouldn‘t have given the guy who pumped my stomach my phone number, but who cares? My life is over anyway... I‘d thrown up scallops and Percodan on him the night before in the emergency room. I thought it would be impolite to refuse to give him my number. He probably won‘t call anyway. No one will ever call me again.

Another book down! I know I am not going to get the full 24 but I‘m at 10 and a half. Slowly working my way through! 480 pages and 2 books - some of these pages were boring educational journals. Had a paper due today. Now back to reading!

Yay!! My #pcs3 postcards arrived today. Thanks to @Kaye for putting this altogether and thanks to all the littens that participated. I love learning about where y‘all come from.

I had my husband deliver a couple of small #JustBecause packages to the post office for me and the postal worker asked him if they were for Litsy. When he replied they were she gave him a media mail stamp for me to use in the future. How cool is that!

Bookishthoughts Way cool! 1y

As expected, this book was really funny. I enjoyed her memoir, Wishful Dinking, more, but this was still a fun read.

JHSiess One of my all-time favorite movies, but I haven't read the book. 2y
SunsetConductor @JHSiess I would be interested to see how it was adapted into a movie because it doesn‘t seem like the type of book that would be easy to adapt. 2y
JHSiess Meryl Streep & Shirley McLaine starred. It was fabulous & Streep was, of course, nominated for the Oscar. 2y

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. So often, “addiction fiction” is filled with a lot of melodrama, graphic depictions of people hitting rock bottom, etc. This felt more real - yes, there was some “typical” drama (mostly in the Alex storyline), but at the end of the day, this was a story about someone learning how to live in the world as herself. It felt universal and realistic, rather than voyeuristic or sensationalized.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa It‘s probably helps that it was written from personal experiences, and not from a complete outsider looking in just for a story angle. It‘s one of hers I haven‘t read yet, but I need to change that soon. 2y
steph_hashes_tags @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Absolutely - it definitely feels semi-autobiographical, and I think having been through it herself likely gave her the confidence to write a “quieter” addiction/recovery story than you usually find in fiction. 2y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @steph_hashes_tags I‘ve been working my way through her backlog since she passed. So far I‘ve read two of the memoir ones, I really need to read this one, even though it‘s fiction, like you I think it‘s semi-autobiographical, just with names and people changed to protect everyone. 2y

JenlovesJT47 The sequel is better IMO 🙃 2y
Liatrek @JenlovesJT47 Oh that‘s awesome to hear! I have the book but get nervous about sequels sometimes ruining the first book. Maybe I‘ll start 2018 with that one 😊 2y
JenlovesJT47 I made a point of reading all of her books this year. 💔I like them all in one way or another. My favorite nonfiction is Wishful Drinking. Favorite fiction is probably Delusions of Grandma. She was so hilarious!! 😂 2y

Continuing my mental illness streak with Carrie Fisher's semi-autobiographical novel, which she narrated herself. I'd describe the first part as being kind of like "Girl Interrupted," only a rehab clinic instead of a mental institution, and Suzanne knows she has a problem. Super short audiobook about a girl trying to find happiness and figure out what that really looks like. Fisher's prose is gorgeous.

I reeeeally love Carrie Fisher's memoirs and this was written with the same wit and sharp humor that draws me to them over and over. I just wish it hadn't revolved so much around finding a man and then feeling complete. I'm going to listen to the second book soon, maybe the character will evolve there.

I should also mention that I really love the movie based on this book. Somehow it really works on screen!

When I think of #ManicMonday for #AwesomeAutumnBooks I think of the late, great #CarrieFisher, her books about #manicdepression and all of the awareness she brought to the area of #mentalhealth. Her books are well written, humorous and honest. She worked tirelessly to reduce the stima surrounding #mentalhealthconditions. I loved both #WishfulDrinking and #Shockaholic. #ThePrincessDiarist and #PostcardsFromTheEdge are on my #TBR #FemaleHeroes

Book 2 of #vacation complete. #CarrieFisher will forever be the princess of my heart. Here her writing is very wry and droll. Her observations will make you chuckle. It makes you wonder exactly how much is autobiographical and how much is fiction.

I would have rated this higher if not for a long section of the book about a character named Alex. We are subjected to many rambling pages about his drug addiction, which would be fine if he added any point to the story, but he just ended up being a throwaway character in the end. There were a lot of great moments in this book with some awesome quotes. It's disjointed like all of Carrie's books, but I think that's just the way her mind worked. 3⭐️

mswriterlygirl Yeah, I was disappointed with it myself. I've thought about trying another of hers but I'm just not sure it is worth it. 3y
JenlovesJT47 @mswriterlygirl I've read most of her books now and I would highly recommend Wishful Drinking. It's absolutely hilarious. Shockaholic is also pretty good. Even the others that aren't as good are still worth reading in my opinion. 3y
