This was just okay for me. I'm really glad that I got it on Libby and didn't pay for it because I want that impressed. It was a very slow start and the potential was there but I felt like there was just too many moving parts. Not my fave. ⭐⭐✨

I saw this on a list of award-nominated books and looked to see if it was on my Libby app and amazingly it was available to borrow. I have read some mixed reviews but I'm excited to get it started! I have enjoyed this author in the past so we'll see if this one is the same! Will update with review when completed!

RaeLovesToRead I found this one quite enjoyable! 1y

1. Dark and gritty story. Flawed and troubled protagonist. Often features the underbelly of society.
2. I‘m not a big fan of noir, but I loved the tagged book.

Thanks for the tag @JenReadsAlot

Hmm..

📖 Paperbacks
🗺 Road trips
🧋 Iced Coffee
🏊🏻‍♀️ Swimming pool

If I lived near a beach or had any money to go abroad this would have been harder! 😅 I reserve the right to swap swimming pool for beach if any beach-pportunities arise 🙃

rockpools I do like your reasoning!! 2y
The_Penniless_Author Wait, do you need to factor in things like affordability? I thought if I picked overseas travel it meant I could just travel around as much as I wanted till summer is over. How dare you inject practical considerations into my imaginary summer plans! 😂 2y
RaeLovesToRead @rockpools Which 4 would you pick??! 🙂 2y
See All 6 Comments
RaeLovesToRead @The_Penniless_Author I mean my ideal summer looks basically like the Duke Dumont - I got u video (essentially beach parties in Thailand), but since that's not on the cards I'll settle for Paperbacks and iced coffee and road trip to see a few friends 😁 2y
MoonWitch94 Thanks for playing 😎 2y
mabell Thanks for the tag! 👋 I completely agree with your choices! (Though definitely overseas travel) and how about a swimming pool *by* the beach! 😄 And the iced coffee picture looks a little like boba 🧋… so I‘ll swap that in 🤣 2y

A low pick. The ending was a bit too convenient for my taste.

Ruthiella Agree. It would have been better without that tidy ending. Better to leave it open for the reader to interpret. 2y

Sunburn was heading for an easy 4 stars... I was hooked from the start. Intrigue built and built in this domestic noir psychological thriller and for the first two thirds I absolutely devoured it.

Unfortunately, much as I enjoyed the ride, the ending lets it down. Without giving anything away, there are a few holes in the plot and it kind of... fizzles toward the end.

Worth reading if you enjoyed Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train.

⭐⭐⭐

RaeLovesToRead @MatchlessMarie Hope you're off to a good start for your birthday readathon! 🎁🍰 I'm reading along! 2y
vivastory That's too bad about the end. Have you read anything else by Lippman? I've been meaning to try her for awhile now 2y
RaeLovesToRead @vivastory This was my first by her and - don't get me wrong - it was a page turner. Really fascinating characters, very well set up, just lost momentum and I had. 2y

RaeLovesToRead @vivastory (sorry pressed send by accident!) I had... questions. (I absolutely HATED the ending to one of the other books I mentioned in my review by the way, but still gave it 4 stars)... would definitely try Lippman again is what I'm trying to say! And if you find a good one, tag me! 😊 2y
vivastory I definitely will 👍 She has a series that I've heard great things about 2y
Ruthiella I agree. I thought this was a perfect modern noir until the end. 2y

Whoa, Laura Lippman you‘re a fiery one!! With wit, smarts, snarks and a really modern twist on the 1920‘s crime genre, Sunburn is a scorcher!!! So many sub stories all tightly plotted. Audio narration was sultry and sexy, perfect for this steamy thriller.

I really enjoyed Sunburn. It had a film noir feel to it; the beautiful, troubled heroine who may or may not have done terrible things, the private eye hired to find her and expose her secrets, the dead end town they both end up in. It wasn‘t overly dramatic, no crazy cliffhangers. A perfect holiday read. Also, the cover. I always fall for a good cover.

Another holiday read and i really enjoyed this noir feeling thriller. It definitely had that feel of b/w movies with definite nods to Barbara stanwyk in double indemnity or Kathleen turner in the 1980s. An investigator has to follow a woman on the run polly costello + in a delaware bar he gets more than he bargained for. A great page turner, perfect for a rainy summer holiday read. Can't wait to try more by the author.

batsy I really enjoyed this one, too. 5y

Anna40 I looked for this book in my public library catalog after reading your review and found another one by the same author, the story is set in Howard County. I live 5 mins from Howard County, my son goes to preschool there! So, I placed a hold on that one. Curious to see if she writes much about the place. Didn't know the author. Will keep you posted :) 5y
