The Last Black Unicorn
The Last Black Unicorn | Tiffany Haddish
From stand-up comedian, actress, and breakout star of Girls Trip, Tiffany Haddish, comes The Last Black Unicorn, a sidesplitting, hysterical, edgy, and unflinching collection of (extremely) personal essays, as fearless as the author herself. Growing up in one of the poorest neighborhoods of South Central Los Angeles, Tiffany learned to survive by making people laugh. If she could do that, then her classmates would let her copy their homework, the other foster kids she lived with wouldnt beat her up, and she might even get a boyfriend. Or at least she could make enough moneyas the paid school mascot and in-demand Bar Mitzvah hype womanto get her hair and nails done, so then she might get a boyfriend. None of that worked (and shes still single), but it allowed Tiffany to imagine a place for herself where she could do something she loved for a living: comedy. Tiffany cant avoid being funnyits just who she is, whether shes plotting shocking, jaw-dropping revenge on an ex-boyfriend or learning how to handle her newfound fame despite still having a broke persons mind-set. Finally poised to become a household name, she recounts with heart and humor how she came from nothing and nowhere to achieve her dreams by owning, sharing, and using her pain to heal others. By turns hilarious, filthy, and brutally honest, The Last Black Unicorn shows the world who Tiffany Haddish really ishumble, grateful, down-to-earth, and funny as hell. And now, shes ready to inspire others through the power of laughter.

(I‘m behind in updating and will catch up all at once!)

I listened to the audio of this and I think Tiffany has a great sense of humor and has overcome a lot. I didn‘t LOVE this but I appreciated parts of it very much.

She‘s so real and open. So much of this book is not safe for work. Here I am, listening at work. I keep making sure my headphones are all the way plugged in!! Alternating between laughing and gasping in horror. What a life.

Funny and edgy. I don‘t usually like to listen to audio but listening to someone tell their own story is impactful. Be warned. It is a sad, uplifting and raunchy memoir.

I just finished her Audiobook (read by the author herself). And I must say, I liked her before but now I love her and respect her so much. She had some tuff times growing up, and trying to become a comedian as a black woman was also hard. But she did it and she just has an amazing personality!

I had never even heard of Tiffany Haddish before I read this, but the title and cover intrigued me. The stuff about her childhood was incredible - she has overcome so much trauma and horrible circumstances. But then she gets to her 20s, and I couldn't stand her. I couldn't care less about swearing or anything like that, but she's mean and clueless about how she effects other people. It became a one-star book for me in that section.

Krisjericho But then, she grows up a little, and honestly, I added another star because that story about Jada Pinkett Smith not knowing what a Groupon was - that shit was hilarious. There were some really funny parts, but it just wasn't worth wading though the rest. I'll bet her comedy is amazing, but this book wasn't. 7mo
Scochrane26 This is exactly how I felt about the book. I listened to it & almost stopped listening towards the middle. 7mo

Tiffany Haddish had one heck of a life. While she's able to bring a lot of humor to her stories, there is also a realness and seriousness to them. She has gone through so much from having an abusive mom, going through the foster system, marrying an abusive husband... Through all that she has kept a positive attitude and become incredibly successful. She is an inspiring woman! #girlpower #humor #funny #serious #rolemodel #love #audiobook

I remember this getting a lot of hype when it first came out, so I‘m sure there are tons of readers out there who this book really speaks to. Sadly I wasn‘t one of them. Moving on to new material.

wordzie Is she supposed to look like a unicorn? Or is it just me? 8mo

IndoorDame @BiblioLitten @wordzie not sure about the cover art. definitely a strange unicorn costume. but in one of the chapters I did actually listen to she describes getting that as a nickname in grade school because of a wart in the middle of her forehead... 8mo

Catching up on some #LitsyWalkers posts from last week, when I was in a brain fog reeling from life events. I had 10,000+ steps every day, which I‘m very happy about! For LW Bingo: #stampedinconcrete #red (the flower the statue is holding), and #flower.

Hilarious! After watching Girls Trip, I was an instant fan of Tiffany Haddish. And her book did not disappoint.

I‘ve only listened to 3 audiobooks in my life, but it was for sure the right call to listen to this book; Tiffany‘s narration is the cherry on top.

Be warned though there are problematic bits, which is pretty typical with comedians.

This is for a in real life book club. Let me tell you I am not a prude and will likely use an f bomb at least five times a day. One of my daughter‘s first words was shit, because I say that every time I drop something. It was passed down by my grandmother and mother. Okay? So that is who I am. This book was horrible and really pissed me off with her description of people with disabilities. So one ⭐️ for Tiffany. That‘s generous. #unpopularopinion

Props to Tiffany Haddish for where she's been, where she is, and the hard work she's put in to get from one to the other. I wish the stories worked better for me but they don't; a couple feel awkward and not in a humorous way. I'll add it to the list of things I just don't get.

All right, I‘m bailing at 52%. I wasn‘t familiar with Tiffany Haddish aside from her Groupon ads on Spotify, which I find super annoying. A lot of this book rubbed me wrong, especially the Roscoe sections. I found the memoir to be really jumpy, even within chapters, which made it hard for me to be invested. Actually won this as a Goodreads giveaway not knowing anything about Tiffany Haddish. I have a hard time rating memoirs since it feels like you're making a judgment on someone's life choices. This is not about personal growth or triumph really just about crazy stuff she did or that happened to her. I would say if you are familiar with and like her comedy you'd like this book.

Finished this last night. It was so good I had to keep picking it up even though it was well past my bedtime. Haddish's life was uncommonly difficult. But she hasn't let the terrible things stop her. It always makes me wonder how some people can conquer the hard stuff with such a great attitude... maybe in Haddish's case it's her passion for comedy. TW for abuse. And a weird section with a disabled friend that I wasn't so sure about...
