The Gunslinger
The Gunslinger | Stephen King
An impressive work of mythic magnitude that may turn out to be Stephen Kings greatest literary achievement (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution), The Gunslinger is the first volume in the epic Dark Tower Series.A #1 national bestseller, The Gunslinger introduces readers to one of Stephen Kings most powerful creations, Roland of Gilead: The Last Gunslinger. He is a haunting figure, a loner on a spellbinding journey into good and evil. In his desolate world, which mirrors our own in frightening ways, Roland tracks The Man in Black, encounters an enticing woman named Alice, and begins a friendship with the boy from New York named Jake. Inspired in part by the Robert Browning narrative poem, Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came, The Gunslinger is a compelling whirlpool of a story that draws one irretrievable to its center (Milwaukee Sentinel). It is brilliant and freshand will leave you panting for more (Booklist).

I've never done a review of The Dark Tower books before, but this will be my fifth time reading the series and I'm going to take my time and give it the review I think it deserves.

It's such an atmospheric read, the descriptions of the surroundings just puts you right there with Roland and the characters are unbeatable.

Too much to type so check ⤵️

1️⃣ I set a goal to read 120 books this year and I've almost completed it, I think this is definitely the most I've read in a year. 😁

2️⃣ Well I'm starting another re-read of The Dark Tower series by Stephen King tomorrow, so I'll be happy if I can get to the fourth book by the end of the year; but I'm not rushing it. I want to digest every word this time.

I tag @BrittanyReads @TheRiehlDeal @inthegreensandblues

I heard a lot of good things about this series. Honestly the first book wasn‘t exactly a page turner for me. Picking up the next book feels like a chore I want to put off. I‘m curious, but if the next book doesn‘t do it for me… the following half dozen won‘t get a chance. 2/5

BookwormM The is the worst book in the series it gets a lot better 3mo

🎧 We are introduced to the gunslinger Roland of Gilead. This is an introduction to one of my favorite series. Just a start. An endlessly descriptive book.

This book tells you of a goal, the Dark Tower in an endless desert in this messed up sci-fi/fantasy, spaghetti western.

Hello Alice, Jake & the man in black.

I know there are a lot of fans of this book, and the Dark Tower series as a whole, so my only comment is that it just wasn‘t for me.

#14books14weeks2021 Book 9 ✅

TrishB The first is nothing like the rest of the series, honestly! 3mo
BookwormM I agree with @TrishB for me this is the weakest book the series is totally different and epic 3mo
MsMelissa @TrishB @BookwormM I knew going in that the first book had issues, but I honestly didn‘t expect to dislike it to the point that I care not one bit about how the rest of the series unfolds. 3mo

rabbitprincess On the plus side, one less series to feel FOMO about 😅 3mo
DrexEdit I really thought book 1 was a waste of time. If you like Stephen King though you might try sticking with it. I found the 2nd book onwards (I think I'm on book 4 now) to be much more King-like. You only need the barest of details from book 1 to follow. I don't think even Stephen King likes book 1! LOL! 😄 3mo
Twainy Agree with some of the others … odd choice King made, but this is the slowest, worst of the series. 3mo
ItsAnotherJen I read this series ages and ages ago and only remember being obsessed with it. I wonder if I would like as much if I reread it. Probably not! 3mo
MsMelissa @DrexEdit @Twainy I haven‘t read King in years (we‘re talking since the ‘90s 😂). I doubt I‘ll continue even if the series gets better. I didn‘t like anything about it enough to continue on. (edited) 3mo
MsMelissa @ItsAnotherJen So many people seem to love it! I liked the other King books I‘ve read, so I‘m just going to chalk this one up to the story itself being the problem. 3mo

One of my goals this summer is to re-read the first three books of the Dark Tower series. I just finished the first and this is one of those books that‘s better the second time through because you know what happens with the rest of the series. “Go then. There are other worlds than these.”

ErinSueMreads I couldn't agree more. It gets better every time. I feel like the stand was better the second time too. 6mo
TH3F4LC0N Definitely the best written of the series. King was on another level with The Gunslinger. 6mo

The gunslinger Roland is introduced as the last adventurer, the last gunslinger in the world. His history is made known as well as his goal to reach the tower. There are many deaths by Roland's hand. As Roland chases the man in black, Jake, a young boy, becomes Roland's companion through the desert and the mountains, before Jake's tragic accident. Roland catches and tries to kill the man in black, but that is only the beginning. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

He smelled alkali, bitter as tears. The desert beyond the door was white; blinding; waterless; without feature save for the faint, cloudy haze of the mountains which sketched themselves on the horizon.

The smell beneath the alkali was that of the devil-grass which brought sweet dreams, nightmares....death.

But not for you, gunslinger. Never for you. You darkle. You tinct.

May I be brutally frank? You go on.

A reread of one of my most beloved series. Now I‘ll finally persevere and read through them all! 😅 I gave up a little over a decade ago because of a certain character. Don‘t worry, you‘ll know when I get to them again. 🙄 King‘s mashup of Western, fantasy, sci fi and horror creates such a rich universe for his story. Thank you @Twainy for including it in my swap and returning me to the series. ❤️❤️ I‘ll be adding the 2nd to my Feb. TBR. 😍

KathyWheeler My husband and I are listening to this series right now. I‘ve read it several times; this is his first time. We just finished Wolves of the Calla. 10mo

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @KathyWheeler Is he a reader usually? My husband is most certainly not a reader, but does listen when I go on my long rants. 😅 Audiobooks don‘t usually work for me personally, but maybe on the next road trip I‘ll have to suggest this idea. It would be wonderful to experience stories along with him. ❤️ 10mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @madams421 You definitely should! It‘s a very unique roller coaster ride! 😅❤️ 10mo
Twainy I bought these on CD so long ago. Every once in awhile I check to see if there‘s a hardcover collectors set, maybe a special anniversary edition. There is a graphic novel version but I‘m holding out. 10mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @Twainy I‘ve been putting off the graphic novels for after I‘ve read all the novels, but I really do want to get to them eventually. King mentioned in the forward of this book how of all his novels, this series seems to be the least talked about/known. I don‘t think the film did it any favors when it comes to exposure... 🤦‍♀️ Maybe someday there will be a special edition set worthy of collecting. ❤️📚😍📚❤️ Hope springs eternal! 😅 10mo
Twainy I agree!! I remember reading book one & thinking ... ok this isn‘t scary. I was reading King for the horror and that didn‘t strike me as horror. It took me a few books to get into that series but then I was HOOKED! It‘s a series I‘ll listen to again & again like Harry Potter. I eagerly await an anniversary collectors edition. 😁 10mo
KathyWheeler @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm When he does read, he pretty much reads non-fiction. He watches a lot more tv than I do. We started listening to audiobooks on road trips. I‘ve introduced him to Doctor Sleep, The Dresden Files, The Rivers of London series, and (weirdly, because it doesn‘t fit) The Agony and the Ecstasy. He‘s loved them all. I don‘t know how or why I ended up being the person to pick the books, but it‘s been fun. 😊 10mo

This book actually got me into the Stephen King universe (and what a universe it is). It started off a bit slow as I have learned many of King‘s books do, but by the end of the book I was ready to continue my path to the Dark Tower. 1.) The Gunslinger (Opened my eyes to how bizarre epic fantasy can get, and it‘s the first book my wife ever recommended to me when we started to date in high school)
2.) Fave Protagonist: Roland (such an interesting mix of lone wolf cowboy and knight)
Fave Antagonist: Barlow (from Salem‘s Lot, because he was almost always five steps ahead of the protagonists)

I was warned that this book was a rough start to the Dark Tower series so I went in with low expectations and those expectations were met.

Roland is the last gunslinger and he is in pursuit of Walter, the man in black. Not a lot happens in this book but Im told its all uphill from now and im looking forward to getting into the series and seeing where the SK multiverse stems from.

CuriousG I didn't really love The Gunslinger the first time I read it either, but pushed on in the series and came to love them all. 11mo

My first ever foray into King‘s work. And I‘m only mildly impressed. It was very hard immersing myself in the world due to his vocabulary, I had to keep looking words up because his surrounding context didn‘t help make the words understandable. Also I thought I was going to like Roland, but screw you Roland. Jake deserved better. This was a terrible use of my favorite trope and I‘m angry with my best friend, I feel lied to 😤

Sweetkokoro I‘m going to continue reading the series since she wants us to buddy read it, but at this point I‘m not looking forward to it . 1y
Sweetkokoro @TheAromaofBooks I will be using this a free spot on my #bookspinbingo board. 1y
llcoolnate I couldn't get into that one. Definitely had more fun with Misery, The Shining, and the like. Just be thankful it wasn't Under the Dome hahah 1y
See All 14 Comments
TheNeverendingTBR @Sweetkokoro The story actually begins in Volume 2, don't give up; keep reading..you won't regret it! 💫 1y
Sweetkokoro @TheNeverendingTBR I‘m gonna be honest, that doesn‘t sound appealing at all. To hear the story actually starts in book 2 not 1. Why was it done this way? If the story doesn‘t start till book 2 what‘s the point in even reading book 1? 1y
Sweetkokoro @llcoolnate I have had a lot of people tell me the same and to not judge the whole series based on it, but this doesn‘t make me want to read more haha. I don‘t think I‘ll ever read his Horror works, I know what he puts in those and it‘a not my taste. Wow Under the Dome must be pretty bad haha. 1y
TheNeverendingTBR @Sweetkokoro It'll make sense once you read book 2, Roland's journey to The Dark Tower begins. The Gunslinger is like a backstory. 1y
Sweetkokoro @TheNeverendingTBR ehh I don‘t know. The only drive to make me read it is the promise of buddy reading it with my best friend. On its own nothing in the story compels me to want to continue. And knowing the real story doesn‘t start till Book 2 is a major turn off. I feel like I wasted my time reading this one now. 1y
TheNeverendingTBR @Sweetkokoro I felt the same as you when I first read it, believe me; I hated Roland for what he did to Jake but he was a "Tower Junkie" he makes up for it all and becomes a more caring character. This series is absolutely brilliant, I can't say anything other than that because I'll spoil it for you if you decide to continue with it. 1y
Sweetkokoro @TheNeverendingTBR At this point I‘m going to go into the rest of this series with the lowest expectations, and I have my guards up about Roland, I am very angry with him, it will have to be some series character development to change my feelings towards him. 1y
phantomx @Sweetkokoro Other non-horror book that King wrote is The Eyes of the Dragon of The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon or Firestarter. Maybe those might be a better pick for you. The shorter stories by King, short stories and short novels/novellas, by him are good starters or more enjoyable. I'd say if you're finding yourself not liking his works, don't push yourself to read 'em. Even people who love horror, have issues with King's stories. 1y
Sweetkokoro @phantomx Thanks for the recommendations, I‘ll keep them in mind. I definitely won‘t push myself if I keep going down the same road of not liking his work. I guess I was just expecting something more “wow” and instead got “meh”. My mother is a huge fan of his horror and there are a few she hates. So I know it‘s a book by book basis, but this leaves much to be desired lol. 1y
llcoolnate @Sweetkokoro Oh I never made it past that Gunslinger one. Yeah some of his aren't gems. A lot of hype because of about 8 or 9 really good ones. Those are good tho! 1y
TheAromaofBooks Sorry you didn't enjoy it, but great progress!! 1y

Today's tarot prompt is the Four of Cups and for that I choose Roland Deschain, the Gunslinger, from King's Dark Tower series. Many times throughout the books Roland is so focused on his quest to defeat the man in black and reach the tower that he loses sight of important things. This is particularly true in the first book and his interactions with Jake. 💕📚

Day 5 of #20Series20Days

There‘s no way my list wasn‘t going to include The Dark Tower series.

King is a master storyteller, and this series is the epitome of fantasy, horror, science fiction, dystopia, and just plain awesome writing.

Two things though:

1. While not required to appreciate The Dark Tower, it‘s fun to have read some of King‘s others as well (‘Salem‘s Lot, The Stand, Insomnia).

2. Don‘t give up on The Gunslinger.😉

wen4blu I read this series two years ago and still don‘t know how I feel about the ending. 1y
sprainedbrain @thebookishnerd if you like high fantasy, it would be a good place to start. I didn‘t read it until a few years ago... there is so much King out there to read! 1y
thebookishnerd @sprainedbrain I love fantasy. I'll definitely read this then! 1y
sprainedbrain @wen4blu I have VERY mixed emotions about that last book. 1y
Weisubei I gave up on Gunslinger 😅, maybe i should retry it again. 1y

I decided to start my journey to the Tower again. It's been a while since my first journey through this epic series, and I think that I appreciate this book more now knowing the outcome. It does a great job of establishing Roland's character which only builds as the series progresses.

Fr3NcHtOaSt Love this series so much. Also please checkout The Great Book of Amber which is the Amber chronicles series by Roger Zelazny. I think you‘d love it. 1y
Addison_Reads @Fr3NcHtOaSt Thank you for the recommendation. I'll definitely check it out. 1y

The Gunslinger | Stephen King

I find myself reflecting on how Stephen King's novels have saved my life. One series saved my life many times, and that was The Dark Tower series. I think it's time to revisit my Ka Tet that supported me at my lowest! I hope I get to thank my hero for saving me one day! Thank you Mr. King, I'm forever in your debt! ❤

KathyWheeler I‘m revisiting it for the 4th time. I‘m introducing my husband to it on audio. We are almost done with The Wasteland. 1y
Nerdy_Bookworm @KathyWheeler He's going to absolutely love it! 😊 1y
KathyWheeler @Nerdy_Bookworm he does so far. We‘ve been listening to it on car rides, but lately we haven‘t been going anywhere and have slowed down the listening. He wants to us to start listening to it before we go to bed — he‘s missing Mid-World. 1y

I‘m giving this a pick, even though I admit I didn‘t enjoy all of this book. There were some great scenes mixed in with a lot of other stuff that was extremely confusing. I‘ve heard the series gets better, and I‘m sure that if I read the whole series, then reread this one, I will enjoy it more because it might actually make more sense to me! This one about broke my brain 😆 but I‘m really looking forward to the next book in the series. 3⭐️

Bookish.SAM I‘m mid-way through my second go at the series... second time reading The Gunslinger was a completely different experience. It really came together so much better after reading the full series. 1y
JenlovesJT47 @Bookish.SAM glad to hear it! I‘m sure I‘ll have the same experience. SK is the best! 🤗 1y

Something tells me I love Stephen King, hmmm... But I am not sure what... Can you see it? (This is only a selection of his books I own) Hahahah! If you are wondering what is the other language, it is French, mes amies. Do you read Stephen King? #horror #stephenking

Mistermandolin I read Stephen King a lot. Since way back. I read Salem‘s Lot in about 1976 and I‘ve been hooked ever since! What‘s your favourite? 1y
CatGV @Mistermandolin Really? Awesome! Wow, I wish I had read it when it came out but alas, I wasn‘t born. Dammit. So far I really love Carrie, It and The Shining. But I have always had a soft spot for Carrie, and reading the book makes it even greater... So I would go with her. ;) Are you reading his latest releases? 1y
Mistermandolin @CatGV I‘m hoping to read everything by him but I‘ve not yet read anything from The Outsider onwards. I‘m told that The Institute is very good. Have you read that? By the way: I loved Carrie. I‘m a writer myself - fiction and non-fiction - and find King truly inspirational. 1y

Pickpick

In celebration of Stephen King's newest release, If It Bleeds, i'm ranking/reviewing all ten books of his that I've read.

2.
The first one is still the best in my opinion, mainly because of how mysterious and enigmatic the world was. You didn't understand much and that was okay, because we knew what the gunslinger wanted: to catch the man in black. And King succeeded wonderfully here.

#7Days7Books Day 5.
'Books that left an impression on me.'

This was the first book that broke my brain.

More importantly...this was the first book that made me realize how much I liked my brain being broken from a book. 🙃
