I like Beowulf as much as any English teacher does and I was optimist for this adaptation. I was pretty meh the first 2/3rd and would have quit if it weren‘t a book club choice and short. The last 3rd, however, did get me going. So if you can make it that far…

Gren and Dylan were the highlight of this novel and the only non monsters in the novel.

Dani & Michael‘s tension and chemistry is perfection. I wanted them together so badly. The alternating perspective is exceptionally well executed. I enjoyed both their voices. This novel is emblematice of Harmon‘s ability to beautifully encompass a time, setting, and relationship.

If I had read this book 20 years ago, it would be a favorite today. Unfortunately, this is my first read at 31, so it is pretty mid shapeshifter YA. Kudos on some excellent enemies to lovers vibes. Additionally, if you read a lot of fanfiction like me, you may agree that the shape shifting was underutilized.

Cathy Helstone travels to her elusive brother Laon who has been a missionary in Elphame for 3 yrs. There is a religious mystery throughout & tension in the close relationship of Cathy & Laon. Cathy‘s love for Laon guides her throughout. The last 3rd of the book wanders but wraps up the religious mystery.

It is a unique gothic masterpiece- extensive biblical allusions, theology, sin, & taboo romantic partners.

⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

Over all I recommend this book for some light hearted romantic fantasy, especially the well produced audio. I love some angst, so the ending has me ramped up for starting the next book in the series.

Pros:
-Great audible narration
-Bad ass assassin protagonist with a heart of gold
-A male lead with love on his sleeve

Cons
-motivations feel cartoony at times (like over the top villainy or goodness)

Last year, a set of books was withheld from Seward HS library without any oversight from the Curriculum Review Committee after the assistant superintendent decided that the titles were too controversial. Titles included: “I Am A Feminist,” “We Are Not Yet Equal: Understanding Our Racial Divide,” and others regarding LGBTQA representation. Censorship happens near and far.
