Written in the Stars | Aisha Saeed
This heart-wrenching novel explores what it is like to be thrust into an unwanted marriage. Has Nailas fate been written in the stars? Or can she still make her own destiny? Nailas conservative immigrant parents have always said the same thing: She may choose what to study, how to wear her hair, and what to be when she grows upbut they will choose her husband. Following their cultural tradition, they will plan an arranged marriage for her. And until then, datingeven friendship with a boyis forbidden. When Naila breaks their rule by falling in love with Saif, her parents are livid. Convinced she has forgotten who she truly is, they travel to Pakistan to visit relatives and explore their roots. But Nailas vacation turns into a nightmare when she learns that plans have changedher parents have found her a husband and they want her to marry him, now! Despite her greatest efforts, Naila is aghast to find herself cut off from everything and everyone she once knew. Her only hope of escape is Saif . . . if he can find her before its too late.

“Game?” I check the road, on the lookout for my mom, before turning to her. She rolls her eyes, her blond hair up in its cheerleader ponytail.

THIS BOOK. NOT A TYPICAL YA LOVE STORY. I expect cute high school romance. I got a story about oppression and feminism and heart break and injustice that made me feel all the feelings. Pick it up. Thanks @madams421 for pushing it up my TBR! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I went into this book expecting a lighthearted teen romance, but ended up weeping at a heartwrenching, imcredibly beautiful portrayal of family ties changing and causing pain, love‘s complexities, and one girl‘s fight for what she knows is right. This book is important and well worth the read. 5 stars ✨

A teen dates behind her parents back. When they find out, they take her to their home country and arrange a marriage for her. Modern but feels set in the past. It‘s amazing that this sort of thing can still happen to women.

Hmmm...I considered giving 2 reviews, one non-spoiler, one def spoiler cuz I wanted to vent about what was happening in the book so bad. Wanted to punch and curse out a few folks & say WTF or WTH?? But I‘m gonna take a step back and say, if I have emotions like these surrounding a fictional character about what does happen to some in real life, then I guess that‘s pretty good writing. While there was nothing spectacular about the writing style👇🏽

Wbabdullah It was a book that needed to be written and needs to be read...for #ownvoices, for authentic voices, for diversity, for #social justice, for #womensrights, for #humanrights. And I guess that‘s about all I can without wanting to go beat someone up...as for the triggers, I‘m a sensitive reader and viewer and I could take this one. The author laid it on low and with subtlety so that the reader doesn‘t hurt as much as the protagonist does. 6y
Wbabdullah The book would actually probably be better and more poignant if she did make the reader feel more like the protagonist, but then again, I probably wouldn‘t have been able to read it then 😬. Some folks are really messed up. Some parents are really selfish, thinking they are doing what‘s best for their children when it‘s really in their own self-interest. 6y
Wbabdullah And duh! The obvious solution to the whole darn dilemma was to make her love connection halal and legal by helping her marry Saif in the first place, not trying to marry her to some darn stranger in Pakistan. But her parents were really selfish fools and I guess there are some of those in the world too. So happy Saif and his folks weren‘t. I‘m just shaking my head now. 6y
Wbabdullah And there goes the vent ☝🏽🤣😂 6y

Just started Written in the Stars, then will follow it up with The Bloodprint. Two books by Muslim female authors with ethnic origins in the Indian subcontinent. One of my resolutions this year is to get over my debilitating fears, anxieties, and grief from the past so I can move onward and upward—forward march! Saeed is talking about fears and control issues I know all too well. Loving it so far but anxious as to what I‘ll be hit with.

ZoeyPeacock I‘m trying to do the same. ❤️ 6y
DGRachel I love Ausma Zehanat Khan! I hope you enjoy The Bloodprint as much as I did. 6y

Wbabdullah @ZoeyPeacock ❤️❤️❤️ maybe we can work on it together through recommended reads! If I come across some great reads on fear, grief, and anxiety, I‘ll recommend them to you! For instance, have you read/listened to 6y
Wbabdullah @DGRachel I hope I love it too! Have you read her mysteries yet? The Omar Khattak series? I briefly cracked open the first one but couldn‘t get into it then.:: 6y
ZoeyPeacock I haven‘t but I do have it on audio. And I would love that. 6y
DGRachel Yes, I‘ve read them all and have the 4th on preordered. I‘m a huge fan of hers and she‘s wonderfully engaging and sweet on Twitter. 6y
Wbabdullah @ZoeyPeacock I‘ve started it on Audio but haven‘t finished it yet. I think I probably have 2-3 more hours to go, just have to push through! I‘m more of a visual kinesthetic learner than an audio one but I do enjoy the read!! 6y

Shocking story of a forced marriage thrown on a girl while on what she thought was a Pakistan vacation before she headed off to college.
Surprising ending. It makes me sick to think this happens in real life.

I know Pakistani Americans and I know that this isn‘t indicative of all Pakistanis or Pakistani Americans. I understand the criticism because of so much negative bias towards Muslims. The author being Pakistani herself writes a nice authors note. Like most young adult novels, adults are evil and teens need to wrestle control of their lives out from them . She uses forced marriage as her foil and it works for a fast paced and emotional novel.

I'm not going to lie, I skimmed because the content was too much for me to handle. Oh my gosh was a horribly heartbreaking story. I would say everyone needs to read it if only to understand, and then turn around and read When Dimple Met Rishi because there is such contrast to the 2 stories with similar background. I loved it so much but I hurt for Nalia. Major trigger warnings honestly just all around, control, sexual assault, the list is endless.

I adore this cover. It is why I had to read it and what made me put it on my #LitsyAtoZ for #LetterW. The story itself is a great little YA romance that felt like a modern fairy tale that anyone who reads YA could enjoy. Its am especially great for lovers of #diversebooks and those looking for a palate cleaner.

Mehso-so

This was a VERY difficult book for me to read with a lot of intense triggers. A very good friend of mine experienced something painfully similar, but she didn't survive it. This brought up a lot of those feelings. But the message here is very important and in the end that message made the difficulty of reading this book worth it, to an extent. The writing itself wasn't great at all. 2/5.

This book broke my heart! Reading Nalia's story reminded me how grateful I am to have such loving parents who would never even try to tell me that I should get married, much less tell me who to marry. This novel explores forced marriages and the experience of one young woman who just wants to go to college and date the boy she loves openly. Great writing and a captivating story that you won't want to put down.

A very compelling premise! Naila's struggle to honor her parents and their traditions clash with her love for Saif, a boy her parents have deemed unsuitable. The stakes ratchet up when her parents force Naila into an arranged marriage, and she faces the possibility of being trapped in her husband's house the rest of her life. Whether or not she'll risk everything for the life she wants is the driving force behind this tense story!
