Cardinal rule #1 for surviving school: Don't get noticed by the mean kids. Cardinal rule #2 for surviving school: Seek out groups with similar interests and join them. On her first day at her new school, Penelope--Peppi--Torres reminds herself of these basics. But when she trips into a quiet boy in the hall, Jaime Thompson, she's already broken the first rule, and the mean kids start calling her the "nerder girlfriend." How does she handle this crisis? By shoving poor Jaime and running away! Falling back on rule two and surrounding herself with new friends in the art club, Peppi still can't help feeling ashamed about the way she treated Jaime. Things are already awkward enough between the two, but to make matters worse, he's a member of her own club's archrivals--the science club! And when the two clubs go to war, Peppi realizes that sometimes you have to break the rules to survive middle school!

The problem with having friends only in your circle of interests...is that, outside of the circle? you're on your own.

This was the perfect book to show off to new students about the struggles of joining a whole new school. This children go through a rough time trying to make friends while being shy and quite and this is the perfect book to help them out and see that it will get better.

Awkward, published in 2015 was an adorable read about the struggles of joining a new school. It was a feel good book about wanting to help that main character as much as you could. She struggled with being the new girl and being called names but made it through once and for all.

There were lots of points here where I had a tough time suspending disbelief and got pulled out of the story, but I liked the characters the premise and especially the art enough to ignore that and still read this in one sitting. #lmpbc

LibrarianRyan I can not wait to read this one. I have read others in the series and really liked them, so i have some hopes here. 2y

So my first send off for round 14 is living up to my book choice‘s name (Awkward). 🤦🏻‍♀️ It‘s packaged up along with Stargazing and ready to put in the post tomorrow to @IndoorDame (Sorry to double book you!) 😬 Great books so far! I‘m betting many middleschool students at my school would love both of them too. Hope you all are doing well!

@LibrarianRyan @Allylu

IndoorDame I‘ll be on the lookout for them! No worries about sending 2 😊 2y
LibrarianRyan Yeah. I will be double booking too. Sorry. Going out this week. It has been crazy. 2y
Karisa @IndoorDame Thanks for understanding! 😅🌸 2y

It‘s hard being with other humans, but magnify that by 1000 and that describes awkward middle schoolers. Delightful illustrations

This was a cute middle-grade graphic novel about how hard it can be to just be human. Sometimes good people make bad decisions. Sometimes people are under immense pressure to succeed. Disliking someone for arbitrary reasons only leads to disaster. We can work together, even if we disagree. Every single one of us just wants a place to belong and feel safe. No matter what form it takes, bullying is wrong. I liked this, so Zoey‘s reading it now.

I thought this was a great story and super illustrations throughout the book. At first I thought the girl was annoyingly awkward (ha ha get it from the title?) but after that it got so much better! She got out of her awkwardness and really shined through. Definitely a great read for teens on how to deal with bullying and friendship while in middle or high school.

#LiteraryLuck Day 18: This is perfect for #AwkwardReads - there is a refreshingly multiethnic cast, varied family issues represented, themes on bullying and fitting in are likewise apparent. I enjoyed how the author seems to be challenging conventions and expectations and showed how the blurring of boundaries (science and art or even among cliques/groups) may actually be the best thing that can happen to #Awkward tweeners. https://wp.me/pDlzr-am6

Update: Hooray! It‘s coming!
First time ever I haven‘t gotten a swap box or heard from my match that it would be late. Kind of a bummer but I know that life happens. Must be Karma that my box didn‘t get to my match before they left on vacation. 🤭
Just wanted to update you on why I haven‘t posted @EH2018 ! Thanks for organizing the #MerryandBrightSwap, I had tons of fun searching for neat stuff for my match.

EH2018 Sorry @JamieLou ! I have some info: it was shipped to you 3 days ago, but is coming from across the country so hopefully you will get it tomorrow! 🤞 5y

Oh my goodness. If you work with children, especially in the middle grade age range, you need this book. Checked out this book from the library and totally adding it to the “to buy” list. The way the author approaches diversity and bullying in the subject matter is enough to win me over but the prose was great too! You‘re missing out if you haven‘t read it! I haven‘t read Brave but my 8 y.o. says Awkward is more about being brave than Brave is!

Wbabdullah Also..I finished this in under 2 hours. It was that good. 6y
Wbabdullah And all the pictures I would‘ve shown you of pages in this book would totally be spoilers so get your own copy and crack it open...and read it in under 2 hours. Ready? Set. Go! 6y

Oh man, so much middle school angst these days. Peppi Torres is at a new school & knows to survive, she needs to follow two rules— #1: don‘t draw the attention of the mean kids. #2: find groups with similar interests & join them. The first day of school Peppi breaks #1 spectacularly but she does successfully manage #2. It‘s downhill from there, however, & soon the art & science clubs are at war. Good story, lively art, lots of laughs. Fun read.

adorable little middle grade graphic novel about the rivalry between a middle school art club and science club. it ends with a great message for the young audience it's aimed at. I love the muted color palette in the illustrations, and the characters have such cute, expressive faces! so fun!

Well this is a new one...I posted a one star review of a book (not the one above, the title just fits how I feel) on Goodreads and the author commented on it! He only corrected a quote I got wrong but now I feel bad lol. Has this happened to anyone else?? I've had authors like good reviews I post of their books and once an author did comment on a positive review. Must be difficult to read the bad ones!

That-Bookish-Hiker I've only had an author like a one star review I did for their book. I thought it was so weird. 7y
DGRachel No, I haven't had that experience. I try to keep my reviews polite, though, just in case. I mean, kudos to them for even writing it and getting published in the first place - more than I'll ever do, even if the book wasn't for me. 7y
Bookgirl @DGRachel It wasn't a nasty review but still a one star review, so I'm sure not fun to read. Ultimately I thought the book was really boring and the ending didn't fit, for me. I mean I've seen absolutely scathing book reviews on Goodreads and often they are hilarious, just never thought about the authors reading them! 7y
See All 17 Comments
celtichik Well, a bad review can also give the author constructive criticism. Could result in a better written, reader friendly book in the future. 7y
DGRachel I didn't mean to imply that your review was nasty. I feel weird leaving negative reviews, period, even though they are, to me, justified. In fact, I left one on Amazon today and it's the only review for that book so far. I understand feeling awkward. 7y
Christy2318 The author chose to read reviews. No reason for you to feel awkward. 7y
Jess_Read_This I had an author respond once via PM. I gave a review where I mentioned I almost DNF bc the character was just so awful, spoiled, and unlikeable. Then it got better and the review turned positive. She said she never responds to reviews but had to let me know I got the book. She based on the main character on herself and her friend saved her. The book was based on her story and friendships. I about died and didn't know what to say. She was so kind. 7y
Jess_Read_This Don't get me wrong, I was polite but I mentioned what caused me to almost DNF. She said my reaction to the main character (her) was spot on and she was unlikeable. I had to tell her that her book did move me to tears at the end and was lovely. Which it was. 7y
TheLudicReader I have had a handful of interactions with writers and they have all been very positive. It's extremely cool to be able to chat with people who have written books you've read. 7y
Bookgirl @DGRachel I just wanted to clarify that the review wasn't one of those ones that really rip the book to shreds but I didn't like the book so...still not great. It was a NetGalley book ARC too and I always feel bad when I don't like those. Clearly I am not cut out to be a critic! 7y
Bookgirl @Christy2318 you're right but it's still uncomfortable for me! 7y
Bookgirl @Jess_Reads_This that sounds like an interesting interaction! 7y
Bookgirl @TheLudicReader you're right, it's fun when writers like or have commented on positive reviews. This one just threw me a bit. It probably shouldn't, and it's nice to read others' experiences! 7y
LibrarianRyan Yes. I had an author yell at me. Send me scans of all the love letters she got fromkids, and pictures for all the awards that book had won. It went on for weeks. 7y
Bookgirl @LibrarianRyan oh wow. That sounds awful!! And sounds like she may have some issues!! 7y

This was *such* a cute little middle grade graphic novel with beautiful, diverse characters and it made the themes of friendship, bullying, community, and teamwork tremendously accessible to younger readers.

Bonus points to phenomenal moms that lovingly defend and support their kiddos AND to totally rad teachers!
