SLAY | Brittney Morris
The YA debut were most excited for this year. Entertainment Weekly A book that knocks you off your feet while dropping the kind of knowledge thatll keep you down for the count. Prepare to BE slain. Nic Stone, New York Times bestselling author of Dear Martin and Odd One Out Ready Player One meets The Hate U Give in this dynamite debut novel that follows a fierce teen game developer as she battles a real-life troll intent on ruining the Black Pantherinspired video game she created and the safe community it represents for Black gamers. By day, seventeen-year-old Kiera Johnson is an honors student, a math tutor, and one of the only Black kids at Jefferson Academy. But at home, she joins hundreds of thousands of Black gamers who duel worldwide as Nubian personas in the secret multiplayer online role-playing card game, SLAY. No one knows Kiera is the game developer, not her friends, her family, not even her boyfriend, Malcolm, who believes video games are partially responsible for the downfall of the Black man. But when a teen in Kansas City is murdered over a dispute in the SLAY world, news of the game reaches mainstream media, and SLAY is labeled a racist, exclusionist, violent hub for thugs and criminals. Even worse, an anonymous troll infiltrates the game, threatening to sue Kiera for anti-white discrimination. Driven to save the only world in which she can be herself, Kiera must preserve her secret identity and harness what it means to be unapologetically Black in a world intimidated by Blackness. But can she protect her game without losing herself in the process?

Me in bed exhausted because I should have been asleep 2 hours ago instead of up reading this book. I have no regrets though. It was a great book! I‘m not even a gamer and I thought that might have made this story less attractive but it didn‘t. In fact it made me wish that the game actually existed. I loved the main character and her growth. So many topics came up but all actually enriched the story. Overall, a 4.5/5 ⭐️.

LibrarianRyan Yeah. This is on my TBR. 2w
jploves2read It was good. I hope you enjoy it. 🙂 2w

High-schooler Kiera develops an online game for people of the African diaspora around the world which celebrates black culture. After a tragedy linked to the game, she is threatened from both inside and outside of the game. I thought this was a fantastic look at finding a safe space in a hostile world while also being a fast moving, fun, and thoughtful book. I loved it.

Time for a new read. My last book was kind of disappointing so I‘m hoping this is better. 🙂

Hooked_on_books I‘m a little over halfway through this one and I think it‘s great! 2w

Washington state high schooler Keira Johnson secretly develops SLAY, an online role playing game to celebrate the Black experience in a worldwide diaspora. “It‘s a double entendre, meaning both to greatly impress & to annihilate.” When a player is killed in real life, media attention brings cyber trolls & claims that it‘s racist & illegal to exclude non-Black players. Keira‘s haven might be destroyed. Excellent fast-paced & moving #audiobook.

As we duel, as we chat, there's an understanding that “your black is not my black“ and “your weird is not my weird“ and “your beautiful is not my beautiful,“ and that's okay.

The tears overtake me and I cry. Hard. I fold my arms, rest my forehead on my hands, and let the sobs out. Granny used to say that the best remedy for a dry patch is a little rain.

[By the midpoint of this novel, I am sobbing too. 😭]

Cathythoughts I like what Granny says ❤️ 3w

I‘m bundling up before walking to the grocery store. Listening to a novel about a Black Panther-inspired online game will keep my ears warm. #audiowalk

Come-read-with-me @lindy I miss those temperatures so much. There is nothing better than bundling up a going for a brisk walk to the market! 3w
Lindy @WhatThePuck @RachelAmphlett @wanderinglynn I don‘t mind the cold. I‘m like @Come-read-with-me that way. What gets me down is the relentlessness of cold in this city. It‘s going to be May before I can start hoping for warmth outside, and even in May we sometimes get blizzards. OTOH, lots of indoor reading time ahead. 3w
RachelAmphlett @Lindy I don‘t mind some cold weather. I‘m loving the fact I can wear layers and long boots again! 😊 3w

Prairiegirl_reading -5 in Winnipeg today feels so cold!! It really isn‘t that bad but the dread of -40 makes it worse. And relentless cold, and snow, and all the talk of how it‘s colder here than it is on mars or whatever. This year is particularly bad here as we really didn‘t have fall. I have to agree with indoor reading time though. I do love sitting by wood stove all warm and cozy! 3w
TheSpineView I don't know how you stand that kind of cold! Brrrr... 3w
Lindy @RachelAmphlett Yes, as long as I have my longjohns on, I‘m happy. ⛄️ 3w
Lindy @Prairiegirl_reading -40 hangs over us like an axe, doesn‘t it? Hopefully that is a long way off yet. 3w
Lindy @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @TheSpineView Halloween costumes will have to fit over snowsuits. 😏 3w
Prairiegirl_reading @Lindy it sure does! Unfortunately the forecast for this winter is much like last. Cold and snowy. May can‘t come fast enough for me!! 3w

A great debut, which made a for a great book club discussion! There were parts that we all agreed required some (or a lot) suspension of belief, but we all liked it and everyone found it fast paced! #TeamSlaughter #scarathalon @Clwojick @Clwojick (despite the title, it is not theme) #bookclub

I was surprised by how much I liked this book club read, since video games don't normally interest me. But the virtual world and the real world the author created melded together so seamlessly, that I really got sucked in. I also liked the idea of marginalized groups creating unique spaces for themselves and think it will make for an important discussion. The book kept me hooked throughout and I did not see the ending coming.

Loved the vivid details and explanations of game play, realistic characters, and measured pacing. Kept me intrigued and eagerly turning pages w/out overloading me w/ new information. Steph and Claire/Cicada were my faves— I‘d adore sequels about them!! Full of introspection and life-like scenarios, I went from being choked up to wanting to smack people throughout the story. Super strong debut & excited for future work 🤗 on sale 9/24/19

Kiera is the creator of a video game world celebrating black excellence where she rules as Queen Emerald. But when real-world violence brings SLAY into the media limelight, the safe space she's created for herself and others comes under attack. Some unexpected enemies--and allies--makes her rethink many of the things she thought she knew. Definitely recommend to fans of THUG by Angie Thomas and Here to Stay by Sara Farizan.
