Hey Litsy friends! I need your help today. I'm working on a new novel setting the myth of vampires in the pastoral world of the Amish, and I've just gotten back my first round of cover design drafts. Would you help me choose which direction to go here by commenting on the post with the cover you like best? Thank you! 🧛‍♂️🧛‍♀️

OwenBanner @Bklover thank you! 3mo
marleed Oh of the three, I love this one the most - pic and colors! And good luck!! 3mo
See All 10 Comments
marleed Giving this some thought and not sure how it fits with the book. I think green gives hope to the title where the red makes the title ominous to its end - if that makes sense!? 3mo
OwenBanner @marleed Yes, totally. I have had people tell me the green is more mysterious, but the red is more foreboding 3mo
Reggie Hmmm out of all three, I like this one the best. 3mo
OwenBanner Thanks @Reggie ! What do you like best about it? 3mo
Reggie I think there‘s a very wrongness implied by the color of green. Something‘s not right. The birds are ominous. I want to know what‘s in her hand and what‘s inside. The other two are ok but this one intrigues me. 3mo
OwenBanner Amazing. Thanks for that @Reggie 3mo

Pickpick

At first I thought this was just going to be a heist story with a few fantasy tropes pasted it over it, but as the world evolved and the action kicked off, I realized I had been very wrong. Imagine The Name of the Wind meets The Godfather. This isn‘t your epic, sprawling fantasy world, which I enjoyed. It‘s a tale confined to a city situated in a culture and time much like renaissance Venice. Very well told. #fantasy #heist #caper #mafia

You gotta love Stephen King‘s feel for local dialect. This novel is one long chapter of a woman‘s account of her life under interrogation for murder. While I‘d like a few section breaks to keep a steady pace, I am enjoying the natural flow of the story from start to finish. King probably wrote it over a lunch break. #theking #murder #dialect

Jayber Crow: A Novel | Wendell Berry
Mehso-so

Jayber Crow is a walk through the woods with a friend. The conversation meanders and seems to get caught up in the mundane which can seem plodding and might exasperate readers of very tightly paced novels, but in your stroll through Jayber‘s life, you will, every few pages, be startled by an insight into life, as though you had stumbled on a doe half-hidden in the tall grass of a clearing. That, for me, made it worth it.

The genuinely kind and supportive readers on Litsy are some of my favorite in the world, and I‘m so glad to have stumbled into relationships with you, so this is my way of giving back. I hope you enjoy it: ”the appeal of the thriller and noir fiction genres in a style similar to that of Lee Child‘s Jack Reacher books”... “furious double-crosses, stunning revelations and gritty action”... https://goo.gl/BzoCAX

One of these days, I'm actually going to finish this book. Until then, though, I'm enjoying the hard-mined veins of wisdom that run through its pages. Here, Jayber wrestles with how difficult it is to choose love in a world that does not seem to reward it. He says that hate easily finds its effects in this world, but love does not always show its effects in this world, because love is so much bigger than time, and it pushes us out of time.

"I'm all right, I'm not going to fall over, I'm all right, and then he was lying on his side in the road, screaming up at the blue socket of the sky. The nose under his fingers no longer felt on straight…" Stephen King Writes some of the most visceral and disorienting scenes of violence. As a thriller writer, I respect the challenge that it is not to over-dramatize or just lay out hits that read like paint by numbers of a fight scene.

The first chapter got its hook in me immediately, and it stayed there, securely fastened, for nearly half the book until I started getting antsy in the midst of the blackouts and personal character revelations and finally wiggled free, deciding to seek out the movie and find out how it all wraps up. Great voice, great atmosphere, but the plot was a little too slow for me.

Finally walking my way through this book which is come heavily recommended from almost every member of my family. It's not high on action or intrigue, but rather a slow and steady telling of a life's tale by a neighborly barber in a fictional town. It only fits that I am currently laying on a picnic blanket on a visit to the old mining town my mother grew up in, a town, coincidentally, that I'm working into my next novel.
