Love in the Time of Cholera | Gabriel Garcia Marquez
AVAILABLE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN eBOOK! In their youth, Florentino Ariza and Fermina Daza fall passionately in love. When Fermina eventually chooses to marry a wealthy, well-born doctor, Florentino is devastated, but he is a romantic. As he rises in his business career he whiles away the years in 622 affairs--yet he reserves his heart for Fermina. Her husband dies at last, and Florentino purposefully attends the funeral. Fifty years, nine months, and four days after he first declared his love for Fermina, he will do so again.

Book #65: Contrary to the bizarre title this is a very good book. The title just signifies the time period that takes place and is not a the basis of the story. The book is a love story with a girl whose father tries to get her married above her station and two men who both fall for the girl. The one man is about the same level as the girl and he...

How it should have ended: They all die of cholera.
How it should have ended 2: Florentino Ariza gets struck by lightning, is castrated by the parents of América Vicuña, lives to see Fermina Daza reject him a second time, now with pitiless contempt, and THEN he dies of cholera.
The prose is beautiful, the translation stellar, but all the atmospheric and evocative writing in the world can not get me to like this drawn out, rapey, stalker story.

Libby1 Great review. This one has magical realism, right? It‘s my kryptonite, so I‘ve avoided Marquez. 4mo
Leniverse @Libby1 No, there‘s actually no magical realism in this one! I was surprised. There are other reasons to avoid it though. 😝 😆 On the upside, the writing really is lovely and there are some quirky character portraits. 4mo
LibrarianRyan My asst. dir. read this when it first came out. Loved every page. A few years ago she suggested for a library book club that they revisit this titles. For two months she was slamming her self for originally liking this book. She can‘t stand it now. 4mo

I only have 36 pages to go. Given the weird romanticising of rape and morbid obsession, I really hope this ends with castration and murder. Or, given the title, an outbreak of cholera that kills all the main characters and several minor ones. Because I have read enough Shakespeare and Greek tragedies to know that is how it is supposed to go.

No, dude. It is not just a shield for her timidity. You're her ex and she wants you to bugger off out of her life and stop obsessively stalking her.

Seriously, I felt for the guy to begin with but I really hope they don't get together in the end (don't tell me if they do!) Morbid obsession should not be rewarded, nor should it be romanticised.

Leniverse @Cathythoughts I love the writing, it is beautiful, and the translation doesn't feel like a translation. But the actual contents are not my cup of tea. 4mo
GondorGirl I really wanted to love this book, but... I just couldn't. I'll not give any details, but I'm curious to see what you think. 4mo
Leniverse @GondorGirl Every time I don't think Florentino Ariza can become any more despicable he becomes more despicable. By now I really hope the book ends with him getting struck by lightning or torn limb from limb by a mob of angry women. 4mo
GondorGirl @Leniverse That would be a much better book. 4mo

I‘ve wanted to read this book for ages, since it‘s the unofficial inspiration for HIMYM (and Ted‘s favorite book). I could definitely see why..
The writing (translation?) is beautiful, but so tedious with long chapters and the narration of 50 years goes all over the place like an old man with dementia telling you stories.
It was such a chore to read this book😩

An unrequited love story mismatched with a happily-ever-after ending. This novel starts as a love story and ends as a love story. In between, it‘s pitiful and occasionally unsettling. A good read for someone who appreciates beautiful writing, though I could tell some ideas would have been more artistic in the original Spanish. I liked the harsh reflections on aging, which stand in stark contrast to the overly romanticized pursuit of affection.

If this is supposed to be romantic then I proclaim romance dead. I slogged through this book as I had put it on my bucket list to read it. It wound up being like one of those books you read in school but never see the point in. Didn‘t like any of the characters, couldn‘t see where it was going the whole way through and the answer was, nowhere. Not my cup of tea at all.

Ye_Mighty_Andy_Spare Am currently reading Where The Bird Sings Best, which feels very similar to Marquez's style. If I didn't know better, I'd say he wrote it. It's by film director Alejandro Jodorowsky, who took the bare bones of his family's history and ran it through a magical realism filter about a dozen times. Feels a little closer to 100 Days than Cholera in that it talks about a whole family tree, rather than focusing on one main character 11mo
