The Poisonwood Bible
The Poisonwood Bible | Barbara Kingsolver
Barbara Kingsolver's acclaimed international bestseller tells the story of an American missionary family in the Congo during a poignant chapter in African history. It spins the tale of the fierce evangelical Baptist, Nathan Price, who takes his wife and four daughters on a missionary journey into the heart of darkness of the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them to Africa all they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it - from garden seeds to the King James Bible - is calamitously transformed on African soil. Told from the perspective of the five women, this is a compelling exploration of African history, religion, family, and the many paths to redemption. The Poisonwood Bible was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in 1999 and was chosen as the best reading group novel ever at the Penguin/Orange Awards. It continues to be read and adored by millions worldwide.

I‘m still trying to “mostly” satisfy these with books I own in some format, even though I‘ve gone askew a few times.🤷‍♀️. Although after a very musical post for Poison by @DaveGreen7777 I was sorely tempted to post Bell Biv Devoe! 😂

Oct 14th: Poison
Status: I own this one in paperback, picked up at the library sale. Sadly haven‘t gotten around to reading it yet.

According to Goodreads I've been putting off reading this for 7 years. I'm a really good procrastinator. 🤷 It was worth the wait. It was kind of a slow burn but there is such a poignant beauty, both in complexity and simplicity, a realization of the horrors of colonization, force fed religion and government corruption as witnessed by the daughters of an overly zealous American missionary who's character is a tragic manifestation of all three.

Scochrane26 This is a favorite book for me. While I love her other books, so far, I think this is her best. Her books are all slow-burners. I didn‘t know until recently that she spent yrs as a child in the Congo. 1mo

Four sisters move to the jungle of the Congo with their parents. The father is a fanatic missionary. All deal differently with this new reality that has an impact on the rest of their lives.
What I enjoyed about this book was all I learned about Congo‘s history. It felt so real that the country grew on me a bit as well. Also the characters are great (Rachel is hilarious)! For me the book could have had a 100 pages less though. #1001books #ATY2019

5⭐️ What a fascinating read! I‘d go crazy if I had to follow a religion fanatic husband to Congo WITH four daughters tagging along. Orleanna Price may not be perfect, but she did what she had to do; and the stories of her daughters will remain with me for a long time. Now I need to sit down and ponder this story for a while more

BarbaraBB @youneverarrived I will! It‘s a great place to visit. The locals can maybe give you some suggestions as well! @JessNevertheless @Aimeesue 2mo
Aimeesue @youneverarrived Definitely do some pre-trip planning. DC is full of things to see and it's impossible to see them ALL in one trip. Smithsonian museums are extensive and free. The National Park Service oversees a lot of sites, but some (Ford's Theater, Wash Monumant) require free tickets for definite times. I love Mount Vernon, but that's in Alexandria and not free. The restaurant there is great and has GW's favorite peanut soup. The crispy🔽 2mo
Aimeesue Brussels sprouts salad is my favorite. A visit to Politics and Prose is a must for bookish folks. NPS https://www.nps.gov/state/dc/index.htm 2mo
ValerieAndBooks You have been visiting some great places! I love DC too. What about Library of Congress? I haven‘t been there yet but maybe you can or have? 2mo
ValerieAndBooks Also I didn‘t care much for The Poisonwood Bible myself... funny thing is that I read it on a trip to London in 2000! 2mo
Aimeesue And I forgot about the Folger Shakespeare Library. If you want to see the reading room and the Seven Ages of Man stained glass windows, you have to reserve a spot on the tour on Sat or Sun. https://www.folger.edu 2mo
Cinfhen Can‘t believe it‘s your last day!!!!! Safe travels and I hope this book grows on you. I LOVED IT!!!!!!!! 2mo

BarbaraBB @JessNevertheless We went to Le Diplomate as well. Real French and very good. And in a nice neighborhood. Do you know it? Also we had an AirBnB in Capitol Hill, as you suggested. Very nice neighbourhood as well! So yes, we had an awesome time and I am missing it already! 2mo

I may have a new favorite read (so far) for 2019. I had read 3 other Kingsolver novels and loved them all, but I‘m very late to the party on this book.

The writing is superb. Kingsolver has such a way with language, and I always get sucked right in to the slow, rich stories that she weaves and love the way she writes female characters. Excellent historical fiction with important messages, yet not overly preachy (unlike Nathan).

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Zelma Such a good book. I haven‘t read more from her but I adored this one. 2mo
sprainedbrain @Zelma Prodigal Summer and Flight Behavior were both 5-star reads for me, and Unsheltered was a 4.5. I just love her! 2mo

I loved this. So much to think about now after reading this. And a really strong sense of time and place. I read this on audio (tbh, the narrator wasn't the best, the differences between the character voices were almost non existent, although once I got into it, the differences in the writing style between the girls meant I could identify them quickly) but this is one I think I'll need to get a nice physical copy for the collection.

Caroline2 I read this book last month and loved it too! 👍🏻 altho it also broke my heart!!! ☹️ 6mo
Oryx @Caroline2 me too, completely 6mo

I first read The Poisonwood Bible in 2011. At that time, I struggled through it but my heart wasn‘t really into it. I rated it 3-stars. I re-read it for the #MMD Book Club in April 2019. I can‘t tell you what the difference was but the second time around, I adored it — 5-star adored it. Some books absolutely deserve a second chance. I will never forget this book and how it taught me that there are many levels of what society calls “privilege”.

cherinium I loved this book when I read it many years ago. I've often thought about a re-read, but I'm afraid I would have the opposite experience you had. I would hate to read it again and be disappointed. It's so true that sometimes, how we feel about a particular book is all about where we are mentally when we read it. 6mo
suvata @cherinium So true. I am so glad I gave it a second chance. 6mo
Sward7 I‘m going to give it a second chance now. Liked it the first time- bet I‘ll love it the next time. 6mo

Pricel101 Agreed! One of my favorite books to recommend ❤️ 7mo
JenniferEgnor I think it was via Book Riot that I saw they‘re making this one into a movie! 7mo
C.Perone Lol - I didn't like this one. I love it that we both enjoy Kingsolver but are opposites on individual books. What did you think of Flight Pattern? 7mo

bluejanetennessee @C.Perone How funny! I liked Flighty Pattern but felt it dragged in parts. She does get a little preachy and has an ecology agenda, which I totally support. What did you think of Flight Pattern? 7mo
C.Perone @bluejanetennessee Finally! A Kingsolver we agree on 😄👏 That's how I felt about it as well 7mo

1. Bookstore (but I did work in a library part-time for 3 years!) 🏛
2. I‘m extremely boring, so no highlights 😒
3. For today: The Poisonwood Bible (tagged), but it could change on another day 😂
4. Moby Dick—it‘s sooo boring (like me), but I do know its value to the canon 📖
5. I‘m following the lead of @darklydreaming and tagging my newest pals (see below) 🥰
