The Poisonwood Bible
The Poisonwood Bible | Barbara Kingsolver
Barbara Kingsolver's acclaimed international bestseller tells the story of an American missionary family in the Congo during a poignant chapter in African history. It spins the tale of the fierce evangelical Baptist, Nathan Price, who takes his wife and four daughters on a missionary journey into the heart of darkness of the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them to Africa all they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it - from garden seeds to the King James Bible - is calamitously transformed on African soil. Told from the perspective of the five women, this is a compelling exploration of African history, religion, family, and the many paths to redemption. The Poisonwood Bible was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in 1999 and was chosen as the best reading group novel ever at the Penguin/Orange Awards. It continues to be read and adored by millions worldwide.

Any of you have a name for that lasting feeling of appreciation towards a literary masterpiece and the development of pure admiration towards an author? Barbara Kingsolver did this to me and if she was a guy, I would stalk him (her).

My recent haul from the HPB sale. I spent $22 on all the books I got. One of the Katie DiCamillo books is even signed. 💚 My nephew walked away with a huge stack of comics (only 50 cents each!) and my husband bought some cookbooks and gardening books as well. It was a lot of fun and I'd definitely go again if I get the chance.

Addison_Reads @Crazeedi I unpacked my book haul. 😁 5d

I loved this. So much to think about now after reading this. And a really strong sense of time and place. I read this on audio (tbh, the narrator wasn't the best, the differences between the character voices were almost non existent, although once I got into it, the differences in the writing style between the girls meant I could identify them quickly) but this is one I think I'll need to get a nice physical copy for the collection.

I first read The Poisonwood Bible in 2011. At that time, I struggled through it but my heart wasn‘t really into it. I rated it 3-stars. I re-read it for the #MMD Book Club in April 2019. I can‘t tell you what the difference was but the second time around, I adored it — 5-star adored it. Some books absolutely deserve a second chance. I will never forget this book and how it taught me that there are many levels of what society calls “privilege”.

cherinium I loved this book when I read it many years ago. I've often thought about a re-read, but I'm afraid I would have the opposite experience you had. I would hate to read it again and be disappointed. It's so true that sometimes, how we feel about a particular book is all about where we are mentally when we read it. 1mo

This was good, very good. 5 unique points of view that were perfectly voiced. 4 coming of age stories of 4 women spun in wildly different directions by an ill fated mission work in the Congo. One chapter about the slow falling under the sway of an abusive husband that might be the best single chapter of fiction I‘ve read in a very long time. A truly compelling exploration of the “shifting terrain between righteousness and what‘s right.”

This is an epic read! An American Missionary family move to the Congo in the 1960s. I loved that it was from the daughters perspectives but the first half (before the awful event) was stronger than the second half! I can‘t wait to check out Barbs other books now, what a fantastic storyteller! 😀

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I think this one is going to stick with me for a while. I couldn‘t put it down, so I alternated reading and listening all weekend until I finished reading last night. I read criticism that the book was heavy handed, but I just felt it showed the characters‘ perspectives - which happened to be less than pleasant at times. If you are interested in the history of the Congo, I‘d recommend King Leopold‘s Ghost (I‘ll tag in the comments.)

This was definitely my favorite of 2018. Each of the characters was complicated and intense, psychologically, and remained true to their diverse natures and personalities although struggling through the same traumatic events. Every “voluntourist” and missionary should read this book. I‘ve always been skeptical of missionary work. Then I lived at a seminary for five years. I wish the tone of this book was wrong. Bailedbailed

I‘ve tried reading the print novel and listening to the Audible version. I bailed both times. I love Kingsolver but not this book. Nothing wrong with it. I just dread how I feel the story will play out. 🙁

Lcsmcat It‘s a retelling, in a way, of Joseph Conrad‘s Heart of Darkness. So I loved it, classics nerd that I am, but it‘s not one to read if you need something light. 6mo
