Your morbid friend, me, is super hyped to read about death in Caitlin Doughty's new book!! From Here to Eternity is about how different cultures deal with dead bodies in the ways that they deem most dignified. Did u kno in Japan, post-cremation, the family can come in and pick out the bones from the ashes with chopsticks? Dope. The world is a weird place & cultures react in v different ways to death. Look for this one October 3 from W. W. Norton

What a true crime time to be alive! Podcasts and shows focused on real murders are super popular right now. But let us not forget an equally fascinating crime, the object of Sia and Rihanna's attention in several music videos: arson! What else is super popular? The examination of rural American life. This book gives you both, with a side of thorough research and beautiful writing.

Omg this is some heart stoppingly good #bookmail. Thank you @fsgbooks for bestowing such benevolence upon me in the form of women killing it with words. Last year Samantha Hunt released Mr. Splitfoot, one of my favorite novels ever. Can't wait to read her short stories in The Dark Dark (out in July). I haven't read Catherine Lacey, but I heard her on a podcast & she was so interesting. The Answers sounds amazing & it came out yesterday I think??!!

vivastory @OutlandishLit I love it. It's one of few horror movies that genuinely creep me out. I thought of "Lake Mungo" while reading "Disappearance, etc" but one thing Tremblay does really well is how he shows how real crime is even more frightening than the supernatural. 3y

I'm normally not into the "kickass heroine"/" strong female character" thing bc I feel like it results in 2 dimensional characters who are praised for emulating typical masculine traits which is SO NOT progress as far as seeing females as equal and valuable. But how else can the Rat Queens really be described? This book is fantastic and hilarious. Definitely kickass.

From Hopeless And Helpless To Healing | Brenda Walker Kirkland

I've had an impossible time reading since the election. I've had an impossible time doing anything really. Any advice??

theshrinkette As far as reading goes: You could either lean heavily into nonfiction- race, politics, feminism, activism, etc, or go completely in the opposite direction and read fluff, comics, comfort reads. 3y
theshrinkette Sometimes cracking open a brand new book helps. 3y
alli.sos I've been channeling my energy into angrily devouring books on feminism and racial equality. 3y
See All 9 Comments
OutlandishLit @TheShrinkette @alli.sos thanks, you two. When I'm home I'll make a nonfiction pile. That sounds cathartic. Will I actually open them? Only time will tell. 3y
Lindy Could your book shelves use organizing? A task like that, handling objects you love, might help you feel better. And you might even get the urge to sample some contents. Be gentle with yourself. 3y
WordWaller I've been doing the same thing as @alli.sos and it's been good. The fluff is harder to read 3y

I bailed on this bad boy a couple months ago because I was cringing so much and bookmarking every other page not bc lines were good but bc they were so ridiculous. Whoever was responsible for modernizing the story for America REALLY wants you to know how aware they are of technology and the Internet. It's a lot, but I'm going to try one more time.

mauveandrosysky I couldn't agree more. I was so underwhelmed by this book. I think there was definitely something lost in translation. Even the sentence structure is weird and hard to find any kind of rhythm. It really didn't work for me. 3y

britt_brooke Beautiful photo! 📷 Reading slumps are frustrating. When I'm struggling, I usually go for something light and funny. 3y
MrBook Hmmm, you can give "The Goldfinch" or "Middlesex" a go. If you like non-fiction, "Unbroken" is great. ? 3y

read_diverse_books I don't read many audio books, so can't recommend any right now. But I hope you get over your reading slump soon! For now, keep crafting and enjoying yourself 😊 3y
BookHermit Have you read The Passage trilogy by Justin Cronin? I listened to the third instalment and really enjoyed the narrator. Lots of "bang for your buck" as they are all quite long. Donna Tart narrates The Secret History and it's fantastic. 3y
sarielizbeth I crochet and listen to audiobooks while my kids sleep. Some of my favorites have been the Outlander series, the Lord of the Rings, Sherlock, or PG Wodehouse. I like to do both listening and working with my hands because it keeps me completely engaged. 3y
Larkken ❤️ the lace work! Very detailed and such a lovely color. I've been in a knitting slump, myself 😂. I pick out audio books from the library pretty much at random lately, but I love books where the author exams their own (Gaiman does this, as does Tina Fey), and certain narrators (Dick Dale is soo good in HP and the Night Circus, as is the narrator for artemis fowl), or any BBC 4 versions of anything are great! 3y
ehewett88 I listen to audio books on my walk to work and love listening to autobiographies as they are usually spoken by the author. Loved Stephen Fry's the fry chronicles 3y
readordierachel Shrill by Lindy West and Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates were great in audio. Each was read by the author. 3y
annahenke If you're looking for something magical, go with The Night Circus. If you're into historical fiction, go with Circling the Sun by Paula MacLaine. Fantasy: Uprooted by Naomi Novik. If you've read all these: go with #hiddengem 3y
TheBooktrovert Spooky reads for October.... pick up Nos4atu on audio as read by the amazing Kate Mulgrew. 3y
StephanieY Been listening to Cutting Season for a while (just going slowly) and I really like it! 3y
Heather_Reads I just got The Dispatcher by John Scalzi from Audible - it's free until November 2 (but I don't know if that's a worldwide thing). I haven't listened to it, but the story sounds kinda cool. 3y
OutlandishLit @CarolynOliver it's called Haruni! You can find for free on ravelry. And comics are a great idea. I may or may not have an enormous stack I need to catch up on 3y
OutlandishLit @BookHermit havent read the passage yet! That's a good idea bc large paper books intimidate me haha 3y
OutlandishLit @TheBooktrovert kate mulgrew!! She was my hero in star trek as a kid. I'll check it out 3y

I think I'm going to start this bad boy despite being in the middle of several other books. Feat. my matching home decor. I don't believe in ghosts/haunted places, but I'm suuuuper interested in the paranormal for whatever reason. Do you believe in ghosts??

StephBengtson I totally believe! This looks great! 👻 3y
courtney I'm in the camp that definitely believes in ghosts! 👻 3y

Larkken All things paranormal are awesome! I hope the book does it justice. Also, I think our decors would get along ⚰ 3y
bookfrivolity I'll believe in it when I see/hear/am possessed by it. Preferably not the possession.. 😂 3y
WordWaller I'm a skeptic for sure, but it doesn't mean I don't loooooooove reading about them :D 3y
Heather_Reads I believe in ghosts. I think I've been in contact with one (for reals). It was terrifying. 3y
OutlandishLit @Heather_Reads omg message me your story somewhere 3y

The Book of Joan: A Novel | Lidia Yuknavitch
post image

Wow, how gracious of Chuck Palahniuk to compare Lidia Yuknavitch to a man. Thank you for not leaving her behind in unimpressive slums of female authorship!! 😠😠😠

Thanks for trying, Chuck, better luck next time.

RanaElizabeth Ugh, puke. 3y
theshrinkette This is why we can't have anything nice. 3y
bookishnerd Wow. Why would they print that. That is a horrible comment. 3y

OutlandishLit @Bookishnerd I really really hope this doesn't end up on the final version of the book 3y
ohyeahthatgirl Barf. I know he's a "big name", but who needs that garbage fire on their book? 3y

The first essay in this collection is called "Against Exercise" and it's just as good as you'd think it would be. Already sold on Mark Greif, damn. Has anybody read this whole collection??

8little_paws No, this is the first I've heard of it. I love reading essay collections. Do you have other favorites? 3y
MrBook Not yet, added now though 😊👍🏻. 3y
OutlandishLit @8little_paws Chuck Klosterman is a ton of fun to read! And does When Women Were Birds count?? Or is that more of a memoir? Who even knows 3y

I'm a day late, but happy birthday to Bilbo & Frodo and happy #tolkienweek!! Lord of the Rings is my favorite trilogy of all time. I reread it the way people reread Harry Potter. I might have a problem. #hobbitday

stargazerblue49 😍😍😍 3y
BethFishReads I reread Hobbit & LOTR every 5 years or so. I have since I first read them when I was about 11. I won't say how many reads that is. 😂 3y
Vikz I like the Lord of the rings but love, love love the Hobbit 3y

OutlandishLit @Vikz I know this is like blasphemy but I'm not that into the hobbit... Haha 3y
masteryoda716 I received a leather edition of the hobbit last year and your post makes me want to re-read that right meow! I also want to give LOTR another go. First time around, I also much preferred hobbit to LOTR, but things can always change over time. 3y
earlgreyediting Brona @ Brona's Books was holding a readalong for the Hobbit & LotR next year. I was thinking of signing up, sice it has probably been at least a decade since I read them. 3y
MrBook This. Is. Awesome!!! 😁😁😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻 3y

I probably have more coffee table books than I need. And I'm definitely the only person who looks at them. I have no regrets. Have you read any of these?? (ok, one of them is a magazine) #funfridayphoto #coffeetablebook

I don't want to say that I'm the best daughter ever, but I did just create some blind book dates for my mom's birthday. All thrillers or historical fiction, but I did buy her a new copy of fantasy, Traitor Baru Cormorant bc DUH. Points to anyone who can guess these! They either just came out or are being published within 5 months (note that I bought her a new copy earlier, I'm not completely cheap).
#blindbookdate

megt What an awesome gift idea! 3y
GuninActOne I love this! 3y
ohyeahthatgirl I do this at the bookstore I work for! It's challenging to keep it fresh, but so much fun. 3y

theshrinkette You have won the best daughter award. This is so cool! Also, I see where you get your love for weird books from. 3y
OutlandishLit @theshrinkette oh she doesn't like weird books haha. Mostly thrillers. I don't know if she'll like any of these 3y
Eyelit How fantastic! 3y

Heather_Reads It arrived ok?? All in one piece? (Did you write anything to go with this photo? There's nothing showing up so I can't see your feelings about the book.) 3y
OutlandishLit @Heather_Reads whaaaat why can't you see my words?? I said: "Got an amazing present from @Heather_Reads!! The title is perfect and it's soooo up my alley. We all love it, as you can see. THANK YOU!" 3y
Heather_Reads Oh I'm so glad - I read some reviews that said it was a bit dry, but you never know until you read it for yourself I guess! I'm having the same problem with Shaina's posts, except because she can't post photos, all I get is the grey bar that has her name in it, and then the coloured bar that tells me the kind of post. And that's it. 3y

Spending the evening working on my very first embroidery project while listening to the Traitor Baru Cormorant audiobook. It's SO GOOD. Amazing political fantasy with really interesting gender stuff. I already want everyone to read it.
#embroidery #crafts #audiobooks #fantasy

RanaElizabeth Loved Baru, the character and the book, so so much. Fantasy but the magic is economics. Political magicians for the win. 3y
