HEX | Thomas Olde Heuvelt
The English language debut of the bestselling Dutch novel, Hex, from Thomas Olde Heuvelt--a Hugo and World Fantasy award nominated talent to watchWhoever is born here, is doomed to stay 'til death. Whoever settles, never leaves. Welcome to Black Spring, the seemingly picturesque Hudson Valley town haunted by the Black Rock Witch, a seventeenth century woman whose eyes and mouth are sewn shut. Muzzled, she walks the streets and enters homes at will. She stands next to children's bed for nights on end. Everybody knows that her eyes may never be opened or the consequences will be too terrible to bear. The elders of Black Spring have virtually quarantined the town by using high-tech surveillance to prevent their curse from spreading. Frustrated with being kept in lockdown, the town's teenagers decide to break their strict regulations and go viral with the haunting. But, in so doing, they send the town spiraling into dark, medieval practices of the distant past. This chilling novel heralds the arrival of an exciting new voice in mainstream horror and dark fantasy.

Thomas Olde Heuvelt is a new auto-buy for me. Just when you think things will get resolved, something else thickens the plot. And then another spin, and then another, and then… I continued this pattern for 250 pages, through two meals, and then suddenly.. it was over.

Hex is the kind of gruesome accident you can‘t help but compulsively watch. It‘s the human race at its ugliest. It‘s squirmy and horrifying and spooky and I simply loved it.

aa_guer2021 What a wonderfully written review! I felt exactly the same when I read this!! 🤐😳🙃 4w

The beginning of this book is very, very, very slow. Things do go utterly mad later, but it‘s a slow burn to get there. I know a lot of people enjoyed it, but it wasn‘t my thing and I found the characters completely unlikeable.

therubberduckninja Also - I was puzzled that a book originally published in Dutch was set in New York - and I discovered it originally wasn‘t. The author felt American readers wouldn‘t “get” the book and rewrote an Americanised version for the English translation… which personally, I find rather disappointing. 4mo

A great twist to the classic haunting trope. A small town is cursed by an ancient witch whose eyes and mouth are sewn shut. The witch can show up anywhere from the end of your bed to under the street light. Creepy, dark, and a fresh take on hauntings, HEX is a must-read for all horror lovers. A great addition to your Halloween Read Pile!

BeckyWithTheGoodBooks This is one of my favorite books. I‘ve read it twice and still think about it!!!! (edited) 8mo
AlisBookNookCorner @BeckyWithTheGoodBooks It came highly recommended from a horror book group I'm in on Facebook. It was trending for a few weeks, so naturally, I had to check it out. So glad I did! What a take on a haunting. 8mo

#LittensDressedInBlood #Day7 For #campfiretales I‘ve brought one out of the vault, this is a book I reviewed in my first six months on Litsy, 5yrs ago. It‘s a creepy witchy Halloween story about a town that‘s cursed. Black Spring is a Hudson Valley town that‘s haunted by a 17th century witch who roams the town with her eyes & mouth sewn shut & has the ability to appear anywhere she wills, including your home. It definitely freaked me out!

MidnightBookGirl This is a freaky book! The bookstore I work at was lucky enough to get the author on his first ever American tour and he was delightful! He's got a new one finally coming out here in the US. 9mo

This was my #doublespin for June. I've read this book in Dutch, the original language. It turned out to be a late night, I have had little sleep. It was a little creepy, especially with all the night sounds. I enjoyed the story and the ending. Some of the sentences and language used felt a bit weird. I think I might visit Beek sometime when I'm walking the Pieterpad trail in my country.
TBR since July 1st. 2020; 565 pages.
@TheAromaofBooks

BarbaraBB I did walk the Pieterpad too! I loved it! 11mo
Tineke @BarbaraBB you did?! We're at stage seven Sleen-Coevorden. We tend to walk three stages in summer with a backpack and a tent on our back. Quite a heavy undertaking as we normally don't walk a lot. But we're always amazed at how fast our bodies recover and always feel proud we survived again. We should walk more often, otherwise it's going to take us 9 years to finish. 11mo
TheAromaofBooks Yay!!! 11mo

Ja wij sliepen in hotels of b&b ‘s. Was een heerlijke beloning na zo‘n dag lopen! Een pad in Duitsland lijkt me te gek. Trekvogelpad is ook mooi maar je loopt lang tussen de snelwegen in, het is niet zo stil als op het Pieterpad 11mo

It took me longer than expected to really start enjoying this one, but I'm glad I didn't bail.

This story of a town with a witch who wanders around and everyone tries to hide her from the outside world was such a cool concept. Although it was slow to build, and not quite as spooky as I expected, once the witch starts behaving erratically things really take off and I couldn't stop reading.

vivastory Tor Nightfire is publishing a new book by him later this year. I can't wait! 1y

It is a creepy concept, although this tale was different than I‘d anticipated. I do like books that look at the horror of human nature but I don‘t think the execution worked completely for me. I‘m still confused about some things and with the slow pacing, my brain didn‘t always completely connect to the details. I also felt that the witch‘s history came in the form of a huge info dump.

daisyheadmaesie I got this on mega sale on my Kobo a couple weeks ago... I‘m really curious now to read it and see if I feel the same way! 2y

October 4th: The Blair Witch Project

Hex is the English language adaptation of a Dutch horror novel by the same name & author. A witch terrorizes a town in Hudson Valley NY for hundreds of years until it finally reaches a point where the town goes on lockdown in an attempt to keep people safe. But the witch still haunts to woods, the streets and their homes. And she won‘t stop until she gets what she wants.

Klou I'm hoping to get this book for Christmas. It sounds incredible!!! 2y
MoonWitch94 @Klou I‘m hoping to get to it for #Scarathlon this month. I‘ve had it over a year. Apparently the author changed the ending for the English version & won‘t share what the Dutch version ending is! 2y

Terrifying, supernatural, psychological, HEAVY--a story that will challenge your notion of what is scarier, a 300 year old witch whose eyes & mouth are stitched shut & who walks a cursed town for all to see OR human nature, carefully controlled, structured and orderly until its not. ☠

Well that was dark.
But it was also thrilling, scary and extremely difficult to put down.
A story that examines familial love, superstition and who we are as a species and how we treat each other when all hell breaks loose...kinda like now.

Popcorn and horror ❤️
Also, super impressed to know that this author is Dutch and instead of just letting a translator translate his book as- is, he rewrote some of it to have it set in America.
I also hear the endings are different.
So really, the most logical conclusion is that I have to learn Dutch now 🤷‍♀️

1. The hypnotist by Lars Kepler. Read in English.
2. For me, English is a foreign language, but for you I read books in Dutch and rarely Frisian. Both are my mother tongue. But for the most part I read in English. Haven't yet read a Dutch book this year.
The tagged book is a Dutch, translated to English, author.
For everyone else, I'm curious for your answers.

I'm always a sucker for a good scary book and this one did not disappoint. From the creepiness in the first chapter all the way to the ending, where if I were watching the movie version I'm pretty sure I would have closed my eyes. Lol. The only complaint was the ending seemed somewhat rushed but even that didn't take away from the story.

This was super creepy and the last book for #LMPBC! I enjoyed the storyline and the writing, although so many of the characters made me want to scream. It was certainly creepy, but less so than I expected. Even with a witch on the scene, it felt realistic. At least until the end. I really did not like the last 30 pages or so (felt so rushed), and I'm curious how the Dutch version ended. Any Dutch Littens that have read the original??

Kaylamburson So sorry it took me so long, @Hestapleton , @Stacypatrice , @jb72!! I'm mailing it Monday. 😊 3y
