Hidden Pictures
Hidden Pictures: A Novel | Jason Rekulak
Whip-smart, creepy as hell, and masterfully plotted, Hidden Pictures is the best new thriller novel Ive read in years. Destined to be a classic of the genre. Ransom Riggs, bestselling author of Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children From Jason Rekulak, Edgar-nominated author of The Impossible Fortress, comes a wildly inventive spin on the classic horror story in Hidden Pictures, a creepy and warm-hearted mystery about a woman working as a nanny for a young boy with strange and disturbing secrets. Fresh out of rehab, Mallory Quinn takes a job in the affluent suburb of Spring Brook, New Jersey as a babysitter for Ted and Caroline Maxwell. She is to look after their five-year-old son, Teddy. Mallory immediately loves this new job. She lives in the Maxwells pool house, goes out for nightly runs, and has the stability she craves. And she sincerely bonds with Teddy, a sweet, shy boy who is never without his sketchbook and pencil. His drawings are the usual fare: trees, rabbits, balloons. But one day, he draws something different: a man in a forest, dragging a womans lifeless body. As the days pass, Teddys artwork becomes more and more sinister, and his stick figures steadily evolve into more detailed, complex, and lifelike sketches well beyond the ability of any five-year-old. Mallory begins to suspect these are glimpses of an unsolved murder from long ago, perhaps relayed by a supernatural force lingering in the forest behind the Maxwells house. With help from a handsome landscaper and an eccentric neighbor, Mallory sets out to decipher the images and save Teddywhile coming to terms with a tragedy in her own pastbefore its too late.

I flew through this book. Having the actual pictures as part of the text was a good touch & helped with the pace. I really appreciated the main character & her development as an addict in recovery. The book takes an unexpected turn towards the end. It‘s just different & makes you evaluate the whole book. I‘m eager to hear what others thought about the revelations at the end.

This month it was a difficult choice between Hidden Pictures and Multiple Choice. Both very different from each other but also stand out as being different in general! I‘m going for hidden pictures because it kept me absorbed through one of the discs in my back slipping and took my mind off the pain. I‘m not sure Multiple Choice would of done that.

38/22 I really enjoyed this creepy mystery book, it wasn‘t as spooky as I thought it might be (definitely one I could read with the lights out) but that‘s didn‘t spoil it for me. It was a very easy read, it had a good pace and I didn‘t start to really work out what was going on until right at the end. Lots of dark themes but still a fun read. I‘m wondering how they did the audiobook of this one? #roadtripusa2022 #pennsylvania #192025 #2022

HIDDEN PICTURES by Jason Rekulak

Mallory is young Teddy‘s new babysitter, and she easily bonds with the child. Teddy loves to draw. But sometimes Teddy‘s drawings are disturbing. Illustrations of murder, for example. And some of these pictures are far too detailed to have been drawn by a child, almost as if someone—or something—is drawing them through Teddy.

In all, a well-crafted mystery that kept me wondering and guessing until the very end👍

Although there is some paranormal activity in this, I think it leans more toward psychological thriller than horror. Very engaging and unpredictable—it definitely kept me turning the pages! I did get annoyed with the MC‘s frequent poor choices and lapses in judgment, but she is barely out of her teens. And where would our plot graphs be without poor choices? 🤷‍♀️ Solid entertaining read!

Ahh! Believe the hype! You have to read this one. Seriously! Go get this book! I really enjoyed how creepy it was. There were supernatural elements, thriller elements, family drama, addiction, a young romance. I read this in less than 24 hours. And the pictures!! 🫣 The writing flows nicely & Rekulak creates an atmosphere that transitions from luxurious to hostile with the stroke of his keyboard. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Equal parts mystery and horror, Rekulak kept me guessing. This sophomore effort is every bit as creative as The Impossible Fortress.

Former-addict Mallory finally has her first job after rehab as a live-in babysitter for a wealthy couple. There is something wrong with her charge, though. During quiet time, Teddy draws increasingly disturbing pictures with a skill beyond a 5 year old. As Mallory tries to solve the puzzle, an enemy lurks.

So I guess I can say this book wasn't good.. but it wasn't bad either. I mean if you can look threw all the large plot holes, you could probably enjoy it a lot more. I thought this book was a thriller/horror, but I don't think it really fits into either of those. I wasn't scared or creeped out or find it thrilling. The pictures were a cool touch tho. 3/5

This was sooo good!! The increasingly disturbing drawings sprinkled throughout - supposedly being drawn by a seemingly happy 5 year old boy - really added to the overall story and the creep factor. I can honestly say I did not see how this story would develop or how it would end. Just wow! There were a few instances of “this is too convenient” but it was easy to look past those because the overall story was so good. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

erank58 @Catsandbooks many communities around here have strict HOAs that ban political signs, and this still unfortunately falls under that umbrella 😔 some even have rules re: how your christmas tree needs to be decorated if you can see it through the window from the street (white lights only)!!! I was really psyched to listen to this, I love Suzy Jackson‘s narration and it sounded like something I would like, that and it has a lot of good reviews. But…and it‘s only a small ‘but‘, I wasn‘t wowed by this. Don‘t get me wrong it was entertaining and I still think it‘s a worthy read. I just didn‘t buy the MC as a recovering addict…it felt like sobriety came to her too easily. I think it threw the whole story off a bit for me.

Mallory was a track star and is now a recovering addict after she became addicted to Oxycontin from an injury and a car accident. She is sober now and lands a job as a nanny for the Maxwell's. Ted and Caroline and their son Teddy invite Mallory into their home with open arms. Teddy loves to draw, but his pictures get more disturbing as time goes on. I love the use of Teddy's pictures throughout the book. It really added to the story.

This was such a great read! 💚 I binged the audio today while cleaning. Once I started it I didn't want to stop. It's more of a thriller with supernatural elements than purely horror.

Teddy has an imaginary friend. When his new babysitter starts asking questions about this friend things take a creepy turn. The action and suspense build throughout and reach a satisfying ending that I didn't have fully figured out beforehand.
