Year of Yes
Year of Yes: How to Dance It Out, Stand In the Sun and Be Your Own Person | Shonda Rhimes
In this poignant, hilarious and deeply intimate call to arms, Hollywood's most powerful woman, the mega-talented creator of Grey's Anatomy and Scandal and executive producer of How to Get Away with Murder, reveals how saying YES changed her life - and how it can change yours too. With three hit shows on television and three children at home, Shonda Rhimes had lots of good reasons to say no when invitations arrived. Hollywood party? No. Speaking engagement? No. Media appearances? No. And to an introvert like Shonda, who describes herself as 'hugging the walls' at social events and experiencing panic attacks before press interviews, there was a particular benefit to saying no: nothing new to fear. Then came Thanksgiving 2013, when Shonda's sister Delorse muttered six little words at her: You never say yes to anything. Profound, impassioned and laugh-out-loud funny, in Year of Yes Shonda Rhimes reveals how saying YES changed - and saved - her life. And inspires readers everywhere to change their own lives with one little word: Yes.

#24in48 #challenge. I am giving my eyes a rest with Year of Yes on audiobook. I can only do memoir on audiobook specifically read by the author. I space out too much with fiction and miss too much. I get all my audiobooks from the Library and play them on Libby.

This little nugget of practical advice has stuck with me.... (oh, and if you‘re feeling crappy, Dance it out! 💃🏿🎶💕)

This book. I am so enamored with it. Shonda Rhimes writes about her decision to spend a year saying "yes" to things (opportunities) that frighten her. I see so much of myself in her at the beginning of this book and have walked away feeling so inspired to have my very own Year of Yes. For anyone who is struggling or in a rut, read this book!

There‘s something to be said for reading the right book at the right time. I‘ve had this book for years and have always put it off. Celebrity memoirs, self-help, and inspirational books just aren‘t my thing. And Year of Yes looked to me like it‘d be all three of those wrapped into one. And it kind of was. But it also spoke to me in ways I didn‘t think it could. I found this to be entertaining, inspiring, and relatable.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Weaponxgirl I felt the same about this. It‘s not normally my kind of thing either but somehow she didn‘t make it too twee. 5mo

I‘ve been reading this book at work during lunch for awhile. Shonda Rhimes has a wonderful family and a comment by one of her sisters started her on a self improvement year. There‘s a lot to like about this book but I‘m not sure I would recommend it except to her fans. Again I‘m torn between a pick or a so-so. . Still wishing for spring.

I can‘t believe I didn‘t love this book. I love Shonda Rhimes so much and was really looking forward to this and I ended up disappointed. I found it to be slow and repetitive and not as inspiring as I would have expected. Not a whole lot in this one that I really liked.

I don't watch any of her shows. I didn't know anything about her. I don't remember how this got on my radar (or my TBR shelves), but I was so very pleasantly surprised by it! I related heavily to how her introversion affects aspects of her very public life (and vice versa?). I appreciated her humor. I imagine that I'll add a few of her tidbits to my own personal goal-planning this year. Happy new year, dear Littens!

Yes! Yes! Yes! Everyone should read this book. Actually no. Everyone should listen to the #audiobook! I am so happy this was a purchase and not a loan. Let me start by saying it actually wasn't what I was expecting, but it was definitely FANTASTIC! It may become an annual tradition to listen to this book at the start of each new year. Day 17 #adventrecommends

Written by creator of shows like Grey's Anatomy & Scandal, Rhimes discusses how saying "yes" changed her life for the better. She also talks about her life experiences & I found myself relating so much to her as a fellow introvert. I really think I need to reread this for inspiration!

I listened to the audio version of this book, which I typically do with autobiographies. I give this book about 3 stars, I was not blown away by it but I did enjoy the concept of saying yes to everything and her discussing Christina Yang.

I read this for the “Endorsed by Karen” square of the #ssdgmchallenge. This may be the last one I get in before the end of the year. I will probably finish the rest in 2019 unless there‘s a new challenge! ❤️

I love Grey‘s Anatomy and Shonda Rhimes‘ dark and twisty style of storytelling. However, I did not feel blown away by this book. The title is misleading to me. I was surprised that this book is actually an autobiography and not a self-help/motivational read.

Are you a member of a book club? Our club recently selected Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes and, although it's definitely not one I'd typically gravitate towards, I *think* I'm looking forward to reading it. It's recently dawned on me that I don't say "yes" enough. I'm quick to say "no" because I'm comfortable in my little box, I'm often afraid of failure, and/or I'm just a little too anxious in new situations. Maybe this book will show me the light.

Insightsintobooks I have this one, but haven't read it yet. 11mo

After her sister‘s muttered comment, “You never say yes to anything,” successful television writer Shonda Rhimes took a look at her life and decided to say yes to things that scared her for a year. I didn‘t love this right from the start, but I was all in by the end.

I loved this book! Shonda faces so many of the problems we all face and with her year of yes she challenged herself but ended up becoming more herself and for the better! I loved how candid and funny she was! I was laughing out loud at points and basically cheering her on at other points! Such a great book from a powerful woman!
