The Shadow Cabinet
The Shadow Cabinet: A Novel | Juno Dawson
15 posts | 11 read | 7 to read
In the second installment of Juno Dawson's "irresistable" fantasy trilogy (Lana Harper), a group of childhood friends and witches must choose between what is right and what is easy if they have any hope of keeping their coven--and their world--from tearing apart forever. Niamh Kelly is dead. Her troubled twin, Ciara, now masquerades as the benevolent witch as Her Majesty's Royal Coven prepares to crown her High Preistess. Suffering from amnesia, Ciara can't remember what she's done--but if she wants to survive, she must fool Niamh's adopted family and friends; the coven; and the murky Shadow Cabinet--a secret group of mundane civil servants who are already suspicious of witches. While she tries to rebuild her past, she realizes none of her past has forgotten her, including her former lover, renegade warlock Dabney Hale. On the other end of the continent, Leonie Jackman is in search of Hale, rumored to be seeking a dark object of ultimate power somehow connected to the upper echelons of the British government. If the witches can't figure out Hale's machinations, and fast, all of witchkind will be in grave danger--along with the fate of all (wo)mankind. Sharp, funny, provocative, and joyous, Juno Dawson's sequel reimagines everything you think you knew about her coven and her witches in a story that spans continents and dives deep into the roots of England and its witchcraft. Ciara, Leonie, Elle, and Theo are fierce, angry, sexy, warm--and absolutely unapologetic as they fight for what they believe in, all in the name of sisterhood.

Oh, I loved this book so much! Definitely read Her Majesty's Royal Coven first. I don't want to say a lot because it would spoil the first book. I love the characters so much. By the next book, they are going to be old friends.

My FairyLoot copy of The Shadow Cabinet was delivered. I couldn't resist getting it to match the 1st book in the series. They are on my floating shelf.

This picks up right where we left our characters in Her Majesty‘s Royal Coven, and this didn‘t go where I thought it would. Not a moment to breathe, you just have to be there for the ride. I loved this one and I‘m already eagerly awaiting the 3rd book.

6th book for #RushAThon

Book 2 of the HMRC Trilogy is written for grownups. Ciara is back in Niamh‘s body, she hasn‘t left the demons behind, and is about to be sworn in as head of the Coven. The warlock Hale believes that will give him ultimate power, but as we all know, men are short sighted when it come to witches. Speaking of, witch hunters make a hateful appearance, there‘s a bumbling Prime Minister, Leonie is seeking truth, and Elle‘s son & husband, wow! Fun read.

That escalated quickly.

It was weird. And there were more deaths and explicit 🛌 scenes than I expected.

Did not see the twist at the end coming. And now I need to wait for the next book because of the cliffhanger ending.

PirateJenny It's hard to say a lot about this one without spoiling the first! Also Juno does cliffhangers beautifully. (I haven't finished just yet) 10mo
Hooked_on_books There was a lot of darkness and violence in this one. I liked the first one better, though I still enjoyed this. 10mo

julesG @PirateJenny It is hard to say much more than "I liked it" without putting spoilers out there. You're right. 10mo
julesG @Hooked_on_books Yes, I liked the first one better, too. I didn't want to write the second has #MiddleBookSyndrome, because it doesn't, but it was darker than I had expected. 10mo

Couldn't decide which book to start instead of finishing one of the many 'in progress' books, so Kid#2 picked this from the physical #MountTBR.

Note the fancy bookmark 🤪 (it's Waterstones' Dispatch Note)

Also, please admire the flooff who actually shoved the book away to get to her preferred sleeping spot. #CatsOfLitsy #GhostCat

MoMogrl Haha... My floof loves to push my books away too, and God forbid I try to hold it above her! Lol 10mo

Book 2 of the HMRC trilogy picks up where book 1 left off and leads forward to some dark, violent places. I don‘t want to say too much, as it would be easy to spoil the first book, but this was a good installment. I think I liked book 1 better and this did see my attention wane in places, but I continue to look forward to book 3.

The second book in the series, and it doesn't disappoint. It's full throttle into the story, continuing where it left off. It's gripping and funny. I love all the characters, and you are really rooting for them. The only downer is that the next book will probably be next year.

Bk3 of my #BookMail is the sequel to Her Majesty‘s Royal Coven. A matching signed edition to my copy, except the cover of that one is pink with yellow edges, they look really pretty together on the shelf. Continuing on from the first, a group of childhood friends & witches have to decide between what‘s right & what‘s easy to keep their coven & the world from tearing apart forever.

2nd book in Her Majesty's Royal Coven series. Too much description spoils the 1st book, so I will just say our witches are now dealing with the revelations from the battle at the end of that book. We get to be in the head of a new witch and it was really hard deciding how I feel about her. The story is gripping and I love how not black and white the characters are. Can't wait for book 3.

I should be asleep, but I remembered I hadn't made my #BookSpinBingo card yet for May. So I'm up and here she is.

Also I'm about 1/3 of the way through The Shadow Cabinet and highly enjoying it.
