@Librarybelle

I learned a lot of history that I wasn't previously aware of, and the diverse group of folks written about were very inspiring.

This book was well composed and entertaining (there was an incident with the whalebone piece of a corset). I thought it was written thoughtfully. There was also a little bit of the author's snark peppered occasionally throughout. It left me with a feeling of power and hope.

Librarybelle I really need to read this one! 6d

An earlier edition of this book sat on my parents' bookshelf for most of my life. I'm finally diving in. 😅

dabbe I can't wait to read what you think about it. I've read bit and pieces but never the whole. People at my high school tried to ban it. And this was before the #cheetosatan years. 😵‍💫 2w
lil1inblue @dabbe I got through Chapter 1 last night. I have a feeling I'm going to be posting about this one a lot. And I am unsurprised, though saddened, that people have tried/are trying to ban it. It challenges our savior narrative. 😏 2w

One of those books that is highly relevant to today & the continued fight for voting rights. The book tells the story of several key people that fought against racism & white supremacy to bring voting rights to Black citizens of SC. Their model was used throughout the south to enshrine voting rights that many were denied for too long. As we see with gerrymandering today, people who are in power are fearful when people can use their vote.

ncsufoxes The courts have recently struck down laws in Alabama, Mississippi, & Louisiana stating that they all have violated the Voting Rights Act (in particular limiting the vote of Black citizens). It is sad that people to this day still have to fight for their right to vote. This quote still rings true to this day, “Their real fear was that if Black people continued to register, they would soon outnumber white voters & would be able to decide elections.” 4w
ncsufoxes Septima Clark was an amazing woman that everyone should know who she is & what she accomplished. #realhistory #antifabookclub 4w

#wdncw #realhistory I don‘t know who needs to hear this or be reminded but slavery was bad. There should be no debating about this. Talking about it is not “woke.” It was a pure evil system. If you‘re on the side of saying it wasn‘t that bad you‘re either a N—i or White Suprem@cist. You clearly need to re-evaluate your understanding of history. Denying the telling of people‘s history/experiences doesn‘t mean it didn‘t happen.

ncsufoxes You can‘t ignore what makes you feel uncomfortable. It still happened. 1mo

dabbe Our nation never fully dealt with this since the writing of our declaration. Until we do, we will always be a nation divided. And, as Lincoln eloquently and accurately once said, “A nation divided against itself cannot stand.“ And to what everyone wrote above, 💙✊🏻💙. 1mo

“What does a greater sense of freedom look like?” Marsha, “Freedom is me.” Good, easy to read memoir that highlights all of the social & disability justice movements that Marsha started or was actively involved in during her lifetime. I vaguely knew who she was from the Stonewall Riots. I‘m happy that I had the chance to learn more about her. She is not only an important figure in LGBTQ+ history but to US history as well.

ncsufoxes #antifabookclub @Chrissyreadit #realhistory #honesthistory @Librarybelle I hope Marsha has all the flowers.💐 (edited) 2mo

I prioritized finishing this, I felt that more than ever King‘s work & words are much needed. The book is very detailed but gives so much more info & inspiration about King‘s work. His views & work on not only racial injustice but also poverty & war are still so relevant today. “Our very survival depends on our ability to stay awake, to adjust to new ideas, to remain vigilant & to face the challenges of change.”

TheBookHippie I really enjoyed this book. 3mo

An eye-opening and horrifying, but absolutely necessary, read. This provides a good overview of the history of indigenous people in the United States from their perspective. It also connects a lot of dots as to how United States military policy is still influenced by the genocide inflicted on Native peoples.

#WDNCW that we don‘t celebrate the 4th. We never really have…Autistic child that hates fireworks. Also I do not feel very festive. I do not want to celebrate our forefathers (that came from immigrant families) as we are a nation of immigrants & we are currently deporting immigrants. None of the signers of the Declaration of Independence are Indigenous. Plus that the oppression & exploitation of others was used to build this country. No thanks

CBee I feel you on all of this. I‘m going to try fireworks again with J and have his headphones on. We‘ll see. We‘ve avoided it the past few years for sure, but it‘s just us doing it so not one of the big shows (which I wouldn‘t want to go to anyway). Basically doing fireworks because we like them - not so much to celebrate. 3mo

Over the last few years I have stopped reading about WWII because it‘s been so overwhelming. This one was interesting but a hard read. The author discusses some of the early history that lead to the Holocaust, the propaganda, the acceptance of many as the Nazi party pushed its agenda forward. He discusses that it‘s impossible for any one person to be an expert in the Holocaust because it covers so many areas, regions, counties of Europe.

ncsufoxes He doesn‘t make excuses for why so many were complicit in what happened. He did discuss some of what was happening in Poland (my great grandparents emigrated to the US from Poland shortly after WWI, they were Catholic & lived somewhere near what is now the Ukraine). He also talks about after the war & basically some of the issues we have today that stem from the past. It was interesting but also difficult for many due to the traumatic past it 3mo

I‘ve had this one on my shelves for a while. Happy that I finally picked it up, it was what I needed. Big RBG fan & now a bigger fan. The book has details about her court decisions & dissents she has written. I loved learning about RBG‘s insights into cases she‘s been a part of over her long law career. She makes me wish I knew who she was when I was younger & went into law. #realhistory #honesthistory
