Age of Innocence | Edith Wharton

BarkingMadRead Y‘all. I hope I didn‘t let my life change my view on this book, I tried to stay impartial. Right after my hysterectomy to remove my endometrial cancer, my husband left me for another woman. (Early June) This book was kind of hard for me, so I hope I did it justice as your fearless hashtagging leader! 1w
TheBookHippie You did AMAZING as always!!!! Sending you allllll the love in the world!!!! Hope you‘re doing okay as you can be. 1w

TheBookHippie This was a fun scream at the book reread! 1w
BarkingMadRead @TheBookHippie thanks! I‘m past the crying every day stage and into the doing all the shit he never wanted to do stage 🤣 1w
Bookwormjillk @BarkingMadRead you did great! And don't we all view books through what's happening at the time? Thanks for sticking with it. Maybe the next one will be better...oh no, wait. Well, we always have Grapes of Wrath.

I thought that was a satisfying ending. They all lived happily ever after, sort of.
1w
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk I was kind of conflicted about the ending. As frustrated as I was with all of the drama, I wanted to see them together at the end! 1w
Bookwormjillk @BarkingMadRead yeah he kind of wimped out there. But then again I‘m not sure I wanted him to get what he wants. (edited) 1w
TheBookHippie @BarkingMadRead oh that‘s a fun stage! 1w
TheBookHippie @BarkingMadRead I got the next book all shinny and new! 1w
BarkingMadRead @thebookhippie my copy is brand new as well! 1w
Cuilin @BarkingMadRead You did amazing. Sending love, light, hope and dreams your way. 🩷 1w
BarkingMadRead @Cuilin thank you! 1w
nanuska_153 @BarkingMadRead sorry to hear that you're going through such a tough time, although if your ex is the kind of person to do that: good riddance! You did great with the buddy read! Sending lots of love 💕 1w
Ruthiella You did a fantastic job, as always. Thank you for your dedication to the brigade. I know you have had a lot going on personally and I admire your attitude toward moving forward and healing. ❤️ 1w
lil1inblue @TheBookHippie Exactly this. 1w
CBee I didn‘t participate but LOVE your posts and the hashtags always make me laugh. So, in that limited scope, I think you did amazing. Oh, and screw your ex. What an absolute shit thing to do. Thinking of you and sending love 💚💚 1w
lil1inblue You did a fabulous job! I had a great time re-reading this! (Although the first time was in 8th grade and I remembered very little.) Sending so much love. 💓 Enjoy every single second of doing the things he never wanted to do! 1w
ElizaMarie As always, you did an amazing job! Thank you for hosting this group! You are an amazing person, and I am sorry you went through what you went through. Your #LitsyFam is here for you ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Also --- I agree @BookWormJillK, I am not sure I wanted Archer to get what he wanted either! Ha!
1w
Chrissyreadit I just saw this- and ultimately suspect you are 1000000000 times better off! what is on your bucket list that YOU want to do? 😘💛🙌 1w
BarkingMadRead @Chrissyreadit brightly colored furniture, a tree up all year round with seasonal ornaments, Ireland, Alaska, line dancing, the list is endless 1w
dabbe As always, you were BRILLIANT! Thank you for leading us and for sharing what you're going through. I want to hit your ex with a crowbar! Or something to that effect. I hope you embrace some of your bucket list items ASAP: put that tree up! Put color into your home! You do YOU. Sending you 💛💜🧡. 1w
willaful @BarkingMadRead Sounds absolutely awesome and he is not only a complete douchebag but a stupid one! 1w
Clare-Dragonfly Wow! You did a great job and I wouldn‘t have been at all offended if you‘d decided you couldn‘t handle this book at this time. Sounds like you had a Beaufort, not an Archer. 1w
TheAromaofBooks 💕 💕 💕 Thank you for sticking with us even through a hard time!!! What he did is beyond the pale. I admire you for working on focusing on the positives!! 1w
Chrissyreadit @BarkingMadRead i will be cheering you on in checking those things off! 1w
KAO @BarkingMadRead Thank you, thank you, thank you for leading us on through these messy relationships in this book! (I did find the last chapter oddly and surprisingly satisfying.) May our own personal next chapters be filled with MUCH better relationships than these! Thanks again. (edited) 1w
mcctrish I fell off the list 😢 thank you for everything always, you‘ve had more than enough to deal with personally, I hope we were distracting in a good way. I hope you have recovered well from the surgery and I hope your ex gets some nasty karma 1w
BarkingMadRead @mcctrish that‘s so weird, I don‘t know how that happened! I‘m so sorry! 1w
eeclayton I've just caught up and finished. Thanks for leading us @BarkingMadRead you did amazing as usual ❤️

julieclair You did great leading us! As always. 💙 You‘re an amazing, smart, witty, wonderful person, and we‘re all blessed by your presence here on Litsy. Go embrace your bright, colorful future! I‘d love to see pics of your seasonal trees as the year goes on. 💖 5d
julieclair 💙💝💙 5d
Bklover I fell off the list towards the end- I lost this one. I have had some health issues that have me distracted so I have just been reading all the hashtags and comments. I am so so sorry to hear about your ass husband bailing on you. Can‘t imagine who‘d want him after that!!! You take care of yourself right now. He doesn‘t deserve you anyway! We all love you! 💙💙💙 4d

BarkingMadRead The pic won‘t load! 1mo
mcctrish I had no idea this wasn‘t finished - after all Molly went through this is the ending we get ?! 1mo
See All 19 Comments
willaful SO MADDENING! How did we not know this?! I wanna see Molly happy! I wanna see Dr. Gibson slough off NotClare somehow! I guess we can watch a filmed version to get some kind of closure.. 1mo
Bookwormjillk So I'm guessing she died before she finished? Too bad. Still liked this book but kind of melancholy over the ending. The characters were great in this one. 1mo
peanutnine Yes I was so surprised at the abrupt end of the last chapter! But my version had an afterword that gave details about where Gaskell planned to go with the story before she died, so it was nice to know Molly gets her happy ending @mcctrish @willaful @Bookwormjillk 1mo
Ruthiella @peanutnine My book had this too. It does have a HEA! 1mo
Bookwormjillk @peanutnine my book had that too but it wasn‘t really clear where the information came from. But there was something about Cynthia‘s new husband being like “Wait you know Rodger???” and I got a kick out of that. 1mo
eeclayton I had the afterword, too. But even without it, Mrs Gaskell set up the HEA nicely, and she was no Charlotte Brontë to kill off Roger somewhere in Africa 😂 1mo
mcctrish @peanutnine mine had the afterward and thank god - I really was in a panic with how much book there was left and how much story there was to tell - but it felt too abrupt. All this ongoing story ( especially #notclare with her long winded double speak) ending with “dear reader, Roger married Molly. The end” 1mo
Ruthiella @eeclayton OH MY! ??? I she had pulled a Charlotte Brontë trick like the end of Villette? ? 1mo
peanutnine @eeclayton I am SO GLAD she didn't!! @mcctrish I agree, it was abrupt and I wanted all the details like we got for the whole rest of the story! I'm sure it would have been much more satisfying 1mo
ElizaMarie Yes!!! Actually if I had knownn- I probably would have skipped this book because it irked me soon much!!! 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly Sooooo, some of you didn‘t know that Gaskell died before finishing this book 😅 I have the edition with the ending written by her publisher but I was saving that for tomorrow! 1mo
Bklover Well, I am glad for the HEA, but I would have loved to have seen Cynthia have children and love them madly! 1mo
Lcsmcat @peanutnine That‘s how my edition handled it too. Still disappointed that we didn‘t get to see how Gaskell would have gotten us there. 1mo
AnnCrystal @PageShifter is having the same difficulty with images. 1mo
Bookwormjillk Forgot to say thanks @BarkingMadRead 1mo
dabbe I‘m in the minority, but I liked how it ended with both Molly and Roger seeing one another, saying nothing, but knowing where their hearts were and where their future lay. To me, their souls said more to each other than their spoken words ever could. Thanks for hilariously leading us again, @BarkingMadRead. 😍 1mo

TheAromaofBooks Thank you for guiding us through this one!! This is my second George Eliot book and I am here to say that it will also be my last 😂 What even was the point of this. 4mo
dabbe The ending infuriated me. All the pages ... on and on ... such descriptions ... blah blah blah ... then BAM! Dead in one chapter. The end. #wtf? 😳 And what kind of marriage will Lucy and Stephen have. I'd always think that his true love was Maggie. What kind of marriage can come from that? At least MIDDLEMARCH had a happy ending! 4mo
mcctrish @dabbe I am so mad!!! Maggie is smarter than her father, smarter than her brother, Philip is her intellectual match but he‘s a cripple so that‘s a no, Stephen is a lightweight and her cousin‘s choice so that‘s a no, let‘s kill her off cuz that‘s the fitting thing to do #knowyourplacegirls ENRAGED I am 4mo
KAO Stunned! It actually crossed my mind that the author was tired of this story or didn‘t know how to end it—so, ta daa! A dangerous flood occurs to shut it all down with fatal consequences! The End. Argh! Ah well, thanks for leading us through this one, @BarkingMadRead! 4mo
Ruthiella Thank you @BarkingMadRead for once again leading us through the breach! I likely would have not read this otherwise. I‘m glad to have it under my belt, even though it was a frustrating read at times. 4mo
eeclayton Joining the #wtf club. It was interesting to realize that out of the 3 times we saw Maggie in a boat, the only time she was safe was when she was threatened by the flood, floating with no male companion in the vessel. But the I still don't understand why the siblings had to be killed off like this.
Thanks @barkingmadread for leading us through another difficult read that I would probably have given up on without our lovely group 💕

Clare-Dragonfly Bleh! All the flooding and drowning was definitely foreshadowed effectively… but bleh! Thanks for leading us @TheAromaofBooks 😘 3mo

Bklover I feel bad for Marian. Forever the aunty. 6mo
BarbaraJean It was a bit anticlimactic! More dramatic vindication would have been nice. Or at least a hilarious dramatic deathbed scene with dear Uncle. I‘m just glad Pesca didn‘t have to kill Porkchop. 6mo
BarkingMadRead @BarbaraJean I definitely hoped for better deaths 🤣 6mo
mcctrish @Bookwormjillk #atleastthebadpeopledied small mercies and @BarbaraJean silver lining for Pesca 👏🏻👏🏻 6mo
Bookwormjillk @BarbaraJean good point- happy for Pesca 6mo
ElizaMarie @Bklover YES! I feel so badly for Marian. Like she was a super amazing woman, and if only she wasn't so ugly - ha! I mean, she kinda gets a happily ever after, but... only kinda? 6mo
dabbe It creeped me out how #countporkchop lusted/loved Marian. There has to be someone out there for her! But you know what? She's Wilkie's independent woman, so maybe it's fitting that she ends up happily on her own. She, Walt, and Anne were my favorites. Oh, and Pesca, too!

Thanks for another fabulous read, #hashtagbrigade and our wittiest leader, @BarkingMadRead! 🤩🙌🏻🤩
6mo
Clare-Dragonfly Heck yeah they did! I suspected that foreigner with a scar on his face might be the Brotherhood‘s vengeance but when he left the Count alone when Walt arrived at his house, I wasn‘t sure. He got the ending he deserved! 6mo
Clare-Dragonfly Does anyone remember, if Laura hadn‘t managed to produce a son, would someone else have inherited Limmeridge? Or would a daughter have done the trick? Or could she have inherited in her own right? 6mo
Ruthiella @Bklover @ElizaMarie @dabbe We can all write our own ending for Marian. I see her meeting Mr. Gilmore‘ son (or nephew or daughter or niece, whatever your flavor) and starting a beautiful partnership both personally and professionally as private detectives. 6mo
Ruthiella @Clare-Dragonfly I think she would have inherited in her own right. 6mo
TheAromaofBooks I ended up loving this one!! Thanks so much for hosting @BarkingMadRead - this one was an unexpected win for me 😂 6mo

dabbe @Ruthiella 🤣🤣🤣 6mo
dabbe Esther truly reminded me of Holden in CATCHER IN THE RYE, and both books ended on a hopeful note--both of them hopefully on the road to recovery. Cuilin @Ruthiella Yes!!!! I loved the dress down!! 12mo

dabbe I'm going to try to look at this positively. The hero of a story usually saves or changes the community for the better.
