Solito: A Memoir | Javier Zamora
post image

The true story of a nine year old boy making the harrowing journey from El Salvador to the USA without any family accompanying him. His parents having made the crossing several years earlier save up enough money to now send for their son to join them in Los Angeles. Putting their trust in strangers and the promise of a local “coyote”, Javier leaves El Salvador not realizing how long & dangerous the journey will be. 👇🏽

Cinfhen Shocking, terrifying, heartbreaking, inspiring, emotional. #InfiniteTissueRead My first book for #ReadingTheAmericas and it‘s 5 SHINY🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 1y

Pickpick

A compelling and moving book that depicts the lives of the powerless during the State of Emergency in India, mid 1970s. I was outraged by many parts- the cruel caste system, corruptions, violent deaths, and oppressive government policies attacking the poor and homeless such as slums wipe-out, forced sterilisations.. ⬇️

#jennyis30 #literary

erzascarletbookgasm ..(continue) The vast cast of characters are very interesting and I had come to love the four protagonists. It‘s a tough, bleak read but beautifully written with wisdom, humanity, hope, and even humour despite the horrors. All the ⭐️s. 4y
Cinfhen Our bookclub read this years ago... it was universally loved but not an easy read. I almost bailed so many times because of it‘s length and heavy subject matter but the others kept encouraging me to finish. The book I couldn‘t finish was 4y
MrsMalaprop Wonderful book 📖❤️😭😍. 4y

LeahBergen A great review of a wonderful book. 💙💙 4y
ljuliel Excellent book . 4y
erzascarletbookgasm @Amiable thanks! I‘m glad I picked this chunkster. Can we start another big book for the challenge? 4y
Amiable @erzascarletbookgasm Sure! You can do as many as you want! 🙂 My only goal with creating this challenge was to encourage people to read —and finish—those big books that might seem intimidating. Spread the chunkster love! 😀 (edited) 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen And I really loved Shantaram. But it was LOooooooNNNgg. 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @erzascarletbookgasm This sounds somewhat like another depressing but important book about Indian people. 4y
Cinfhen Behind the Beautiful Forevers is a beautiful book @BarbaraTheBibliophage @erzascarletbookgasm but it‘s an #InfiniteTissueRead 😭😭 4y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was a first time read and I really enjoyed it. Made me think about how we treat people with disabilities. Both Algernon, a white test study mouse, and Charley, an adult man with cognitive disabilities tugged at my heart strings.

Cinfhen OMG 😭😭😭this was an #InfiniteTissueRead 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Great choice! 4y
mrp27 @Cinfhen It was! Especially since I have a family member with special needs. 4y

@Cinfhen #bookreport

- Not a ton of reading done this week, feeling scattered and unfocused, but I did read and love the tagged book... an easy fun page turner with super short chapters and a dead pan tone....
- Loving the writing in Leading men, and savoring it slowly...
- American Dirt is not drawing me in, but have to plod on as it‘s for work bookclub...
- Just started Salt in my Soul... and expecting an #infinitetissueread 😢

AmyG American Dirt didn‘t draw me in either. Sorry you have to plod through it. (edited) 4y
Cinfhen I hear ya on the trouble focusing....it took a bit before I became invested in American Dirt but once I committed I found the journey worth taking. Hope it picks up for you xx 4y

If you‘re a foodie, romantic, #armchairTraveler, mother or caregiver this book will fill your heart with a swell of emotions. In the most soothing voice Tembi Locke shares her short but intense love story. Audio includes authentic recipes from Tembi‘s kitchen as her husband, Saro was an acclaimed chef. #InfiniteTissueRead

A great start to the year!

- completed Lisa Jewell for B&N bookclub. Not groundbreaking but fun page-turner.
- read the original Fleabag play. Lots of great background stuff from Phoebe about how the character came about. Loved it!
- Backman novella for #authoramonth which hit very close to home. #infinitetissueread 😢
- Still working on my Gentleman in Moscow audio!
- Started The Lover in print, and Twenty-One truths on kindle.👍

Eventide | Kent Haruf
post image
Pickpick

Just a magnificent follow up to Plainsong. Kent Haruf was a master of capturing everyday triumphs and hardships with the most simplistic prose. I recommend reading Plainsong first. I‘ve already purchased the final book of this trilogy, Benediction. 5 BIG HEARTFELT stars. #InfiniteTissueRead I may go back and reread Our Souls At Night after I read Benediction. I feel like I might have missed subtle references to past characters.

TrishB So Plainsong is currently #99ponkindle 😁 4y
Centique Okay well I have to gird my heart and get back in to this one then! 4y
Cinfhen Buy Plainsong @TrishB I don‘t think you‘ll be disappointed and just get your tissues ready @Centique and you too @TrishB I shed a few tears with both books 💕💕 4y
BarbaraBB This sounds so good. Great review!! 4y

I fear this is going to be an #infinitetissueread 😭Good thing I‘m still reading a lighter book, because I‘m going to need to balance my emotions @Hooked_on_books

Hooked_on_books I‘m actually alternating back and forth with this fabulous book so I don‘t get buried in sadness: 4y

post image

I‘m posting this in response to @ljuliel ‘s Challenge to #LetsKeepLitsyActive by posting a book that moved us emotionally.

Could post many but The Light Between Oceans challenged my moral compass and made me cry long ugly tears! 😢😭😢😭😢😭😢😭😢 Such a great book and stayed with me. ❣️😍

What book moved you emotionally? Amy emotions. #BooksMoveUsEmotionally

TheBookHippie I‘ve thrown a few books in my day as all #BOTMBUDDYREADERS know. However Girl in Pieces had me sobbing in recognising myself as a teen and all the teens I mentor now and in the past 4y
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie Can certainly see why! And I always worry about your walls and ornaments. #ChuckMyBook 4y

Crazeedi This year this one, but there are others... 4y
TheAromaofBooks Gah, this book got me, too! I thought the author did a really amazing job making Isabelle a sympathetic character even when I disagreed with her. I cried buckets over this one. 4y
Crazeedi Also this one stuck with me because I couldn't believe someone who grew up in these circumstances made something of herself 4y
MrBook 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 4y
Cinfhen I LOVED your tagged book!!!! This one tore me up 4y
Andrew65 @Cinfhen Yes same for me with Sarah‘s Key! 4y
Tove_Reads I read it on the train, but had to stop because I kept on crying. Had to finish the book and the crying at home instead. 4y
Tove_Reads This one is nearly impossible to process 4y
Andrew65 Some great books to explore. Thanks @Tove_Reads 4y
gradcat @Andrew65 It‘s the memoirs for me, like @crazeedi ... particularly the tagged book & “Mayhem” by Sigrid Rausing. Great convo topic, Andrew! 👍 4y
Crazeedi @Cinfhen @Andrew65 I have Sarah's key on my shelf, have picked it up and didnt know if I wanted to cry yet.... 4y
