Wow....I cannot express how much I loved this book, even better then Plainsong. This was 100% in my wheelhouse. This was a very quiet novel and literary fiction at its core. If you like Jane Smiley you will absolutely love this one.

Tamra I love Haruf. 2mo
Soubhiville Better than Plainsong? Wow. I just found a used copy of this, and can‘t wait to read it. 2mo

Just a magnificent follow up to Plainsong. Kent Haruf was a master of capturing everyday triumphs and hardships with the most simplistic prose. I recommend reading Plainsong first. I‘ve already purchased the final book of this trilogy, Benediction. 5 BIG HEARTFELT stars. #InfiniteTissueRead I may go back and reread Our Souls At Night after I read Benediction. I feel like I might have missed subtle references to past characters.

TrishB So Plainsong is currently #99ponkindle 😁 2mo
Centique Okay well I have to gird my heart and get back in to this one then! 2mo

Kent Haruf had a way with words. This is the second book in a series about a community in Holt, Colorado. His writing is simple, almost plain (and no quotation marks!) but somehow it‘s just so beautiful. I didn‘t like this one quite as much as Plainsong; it was so sad, and a bit darker. But there‘s a quiet peace about his books that I just love. I‘m trying to savor them slowly since he passed away and won‘t be writing more.

Tamra He certainly did. 8mo

My five star reads of 2018! I‘m usually a big horror novel reader but decided to read outside of my comfort zone this year. I‘m so glad I did because I discovered a few new favorite authors.

I liked this, but not nearly as much as Plainsong. Got off to a very sluggish start. It was so, so sad and much darker than the first one. I‘ll definitely finish the series but am hoping that the last book returns to the more hopeful tone of the first.

#TBRtemptation post 1! This is the 2nd installment in the Plainsong series. In the town of Holt, Colorado, the aging McPherson brothers are living without Victoria, a single mom they took in who's moved on to college. A lonely boy cares for his grandfather. A disabled couple protects a violent relative. They'll all intersect in marvelous ways. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Tamra I really enjoy Haruf. 2y
KVanRead Loved this one and the whole trilogy. And his last one coming to Netflix September 29: 2y

It's going to to be another hot day here in Chicago but right now, the weather is perfect for getting in my #morningreading #outside. This book is an excellent companion/follow-up to my last read, Hillbilly Elegy. A completely different area of the country, but many people dealing with the same issues as in HE. #bookandcoffee

Ericmanciniwriter One of my favorite books- are you reading the whole trilogy? 3y
cathysaid I absolutely adore everything written by Haruf, but Plainsong is definitely my favorite. 3y
Lola @Eamann I am! I read Plainsong last month-loved it. This one just broke my heart 💔😔 3y
Lola @cathysaid I adored Plainsong. My first was Our Souls at Night which I first heard about on the late great Books on the Nightstand podcast. I loved that one, too. 3y

I read this beautiful novel at the perfect time, as I was grieving the untimely death of my aunt, the strongest woman I've ever known. There is a quiet power in Haruf's words and stories that soothed my soul, but made my heart ache all the same. I began this sequel shortly after finishing Plainsong and I dare say it's even better.

My god, I love these Kent Haruf books. This one was so achingly sad, and yet so hopeful. Filled with meditative space and and spare sentences. Reading these books is like putting my shriveled sponge of a brain into a pan of warm water. Can't recommend them enough. Apropos of nothing, a picture of my kooky daughter, who I'm missing badly even as I luxuriate in a silent hotel room.

CoffeeBooksRepeat So cute!! 3y
mauveandrosysky Ok I realllllllly need to read his books. I think I say this every time someone posts about him! 3y
Ericmanciniwriter @mauveandrosysky don't make the mistake I did and read them out of order: it's plainsong, Eventide, then benediction. Go! 3y

I think Haruf had Joyce on the brain while writing these scenes. Lots of phrases and images similar to the last paragraph of The Dead. It'll be a sad day when I finish reading through everything Haruf wrote.

BethFishReads 😭😭😭 I was so sad when he died. 3y
LindaGrace812 I read everything he wrote after he passed away, somehow not having even heard of him before then. I don't think there is a word in the English language to properly describe how his writing made me feel - at peace, contented, calm, and sad all at once. 3y
Ericmanciniwriter @LindaGrace812 really well said! I describe it as Hemingway in the Midwest with more empathy. 3y

Feeling bereft. This completes the Plainsong Trilogy for me (out of order due to library availability) and I'm feeling an ache in my heart for the spare and tender beauty of Haruf's writing. Highly recommend - you will drink up every word but you'll feel so sad when you're done.
