Girl in Pieces
Girl in Pieces | Kathleen Glasgow
For fans of Girl, Interrupted, Thirteen Reasons Why, and All the Bright Places comes Kathleen Glasgow’s debut novel about a girl who has lost everything—almost even herself. Charlotte Davis is in pieces. At seventeen she’s already lost more than most people do in a lifetime. But she’s learned how to forget. The broken glass washes away the sorrow until there is nothing but calm. You don’t have to think about your father and the river. Your best friend, who is gone forever. Or your mother, who has nothing left to give you. Every new scar hardens Charlie’s heart just a little more, yet it still hurts so much. It hurts enough to not care anymore, which is sometimes what has to happen before you can find your way back from the edge. A deeply moving portrait of a girl in a world that owes her nothing, yet has taken so much, and the journey she must take to put herself back together. It’s a story you won’t be able to look away from. From the Hardcover edition.

Now finally reading this, but through my phone. It‘s going to be a different experience because I prefer reading with a hard copy so much more! So can someone tell me if the bfc‘s are self-started or do I have to join some organized competition to get started with a bfc? A newbie asking for a friend.

I like books that make me feel and make me think but this book was just too depressing with absolutely no signs of hope or improvement so I stopped half way through cause I couldn't handle it. 🤷‍♀️

Everything about this book, I loved. The way that Kathleen writes, the words she chooses to use. It's all enchanting and grasping. Not only that, but it was comforting to know I wasn't alone in the self harm world.

⭐️3/5
As someone who loves early Ellen Hopkins, I was expecting to love this book. However, I wasn‘t compelled to pick it back up. I think I waited like 6 months between starting and finishing it, which could affect my opinions on the book but I think the fact I could do that also says a lot. It deals with a lot of big issues and isn‘t afraid of pushing subjects, but none of them felt fully fleshed out. I was left wanting more.

This was messed up, terrifying really. I'm still scared and depressed. I read books to be happy and escape the real world but this book did the opposite. I'm full of mixed emotions. Overall I liked it but started losing interest about halfway through; it was just too long. An author must dig really deep to be able to write something as disturbing as Girl in Pieces. I'm retreating back into my safe bubble now, thank you. :(

I loved it. It was so raw and emotional and I felt for the main character. Real life struggles people deal with and trying to find your way in life. There are some triggers in this book for drugs, abuse, mental illness and more.

“I just want to feel better. My own body is my deepest enemy. It wants, it wants, it wants and when it does not get, it cries and cries and I punish it. How can you live in fear of your own body?”

Girl in Pieces is a beautiful story about a girl (Charlie) trying to put the pieces of her life back together after everything has been taken from her. The book starts in Minnesota, but the majority takes place in #Arizona @LibraryBelle #ReadingUSA2019

This book is really important. It‘s a book that everyone should read because like the author says, we probably all know someone right now who self-harms. This book didn‘t catch my heart because I identify with Charlie; it caught my heart because Charlie hurts and I want to hold her. Read this book! Like, now. Don‘t put it on your list. Read it and then share it. I couldn‘t put it down.

It took me a little while to get into this book, but it was worth the wait. I listened to the audiobook over the course of a few days while commuting to work on the train. It held my attention, and really hit me with a lot of feels at the end.

It deals with sensitive subject matter, including drugs and cutting, so not a good fit for anyone in search of a light read.

Loved the author‘s note at the end.

“I've got venom in my veins
I've got #poison in my heart
And all my broken dreams are tearing me apart
I've got poison in my heart”

The chorus of this song made me think of this book and its MC, Charlotte, who‘s struggling with trauma, addiction and self harm. A tough, heartbreaking, but also really great book, about seriously difficult subjects.

So I have been sick for almost 2 weeks and haven't been able to focus on reading, which sucks because it was the perfect time to get some good reading in. But I have been listening to this audiobook. It's very good, but also very difficult and sad. Big Trigger Warnings! The narrator is also really good. Hopwfully I'll get back to reading soon, I miss it!

I really tried. But I couldn‘t, maybe because I can‘t identify with the MC. Or maybe it‘s because I‘m battling depression myself and I just can‘t handle this. I don‘t know.... I never leave a book unfinished but I got through 60 it pages and decided that life is too short to read books you don‘t enjoy. That‘s what school is for.... and since I already have to suffer through reading textbooks I don‘t want to suffer during my leisure time.

I just finished reading this for my “adults who read YA” book club. I did not want to read it and I waited until the very last minute before i did. Well it was excellent and I‘m really glad that I did. This is not something I would‘ve ever picked up on my own.

MisterWhitaker Oof. I know the feeling! Glad it was enjoyable, tho. Sometimes those tough reads are the most rewarding, but man if they aren't hard to get into. 2y
Yeah_I_Read @MisterWhitaker yes exactly! But it was sooo good 2y
Prairiegirl_reading I love it when that happens!! I'm having the opposite happen to me right now. The book I suggested for my book club (because I expected to love) it is not grabbing me and I would totally dnf it but I have to run the discussion. 😕 2y

Definitely one of my favorite books from this year. I‘m glad this will be one of my final ones of the year.

In group, Casper doesn‘t like us to say cut or cutting or burn or stab. She says it doesn‘t matter what you do, or how you do it, it‘s all the same. You can drink, slice, do Meth, do Coke, burn, cut, slash, rip out your eyelashes or fuck till you bleed. It‘s all the same thing; self harm.

I'm re-reviewing this as I don't think I judged it fairly the 1st time. I thought that b/c of my feelings during the book, it made the book bad, but then I realized that the author was talented to make me feel these things. There's still things I don't like about the book; how cliche it could be, etc. The author did a wonderful job writing this is sense of emotions. She made me feel horrible and it was evident she had experience w/this topic

The book ended ok. I usually am never content with the way a book ends, but this one didn't leave me wanting more or seem like the story was unfinished. The only thing I liked was at the end, the author adds a list of hotlines for anyone who makes it that far in. This book was too triggering for me. It may be helpful to those who know someone dealing with self harm, but shouldn't be read by those who self harm or are dealing with addiction.

RaimeyGallant Nice review. 2y
