The Truth About Alice | Jennifer Mathieu
post image
Pickpick

Rumors have a lot of power once they‘re generated and spread. Alice is slut-shamed at HS bc of rumors made up about her. The resolution was unusual but okay. “Repeat a lie often enough and it becomes the ‘truth‘” is called the truth-by-repetition (TBR) effect.

Sweet picture book that is a Coretta Scott King award winner; shows that family love is comforting and all around us in nature too.

Isabel in Bloom | Mae Respicio

Isabel is so connected to trees and plants and gardens - her ‘green‘ life is a metaphor for how she survives, both physically and emotionally. She has learned from her Lolo and Lola that no matter where you live, a garden can thrive. “Bloom where you are planted.”🌿🪻🌺 MG novel in verse💚💚

Pretty twisty! A story about a toxic female friendship and you don‘t know if you can trust either character. The ending was not what I expected but good…and there‘s a possible story for a sequel should Sutanto go that route! And if she does, I‘d read it.

What a lovely story of how so many peoples' lives are changed, in both big and small ways, by Nightingale Books, the little Bookshop in the town of Peasebrook. When Julius Nightingale passes away, his daughter Emelia comes back home and temporarily takes over his bookshop. Everyone in town stops by to make sure Emelia knows how much her father and his bookshop meant to them.

Carrie White does not have it easy. She is unpopular at school and subjected to her mother‘s religious fanaticism at home. She also has a secret: she can move things with her mind. When she feels like she‘s been given a chance to be normal, an unexpected and cruel prank turns her gift into a weapon of horror.

This was a reread. Always as good as the first time I read it.

‘The daughter of the witch has spent her life in the forest, in a wondrous candy cottage as dangerous as it is beautiful. She seeks to undo her mother‘s spells and free the poor souls who fell to temptation.‘
A fantastic mashup of #HanselAndGretel and The Gingerbread Man. This was cute, sugary sweet, and just a little bit Grimm.

A Villain‘s Ever After Series. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Douglas Bastard | J R Tomlin

Pickpick

Finished my fourth book for #AwesomeApril.

This is the first book in the Archibald the Grim Series by J R Tomlin. Quite a short but very readable book covering the early part of the life of The Black Douglas‘s illegitimate son. The Black Douglas (Sir James Douglas) was a staunch ally of Robert the Bruce. It‘s set between 1338 and 1346 as the young King David and his allies attempt to get back control of Scotland from the English.

Andrew65 I look forward to continuing this series, as it is a period of British history I do not know enough about.
