One of my top 10 most enjoyable books. A collection of stories, spanning centuries, following various incarnations and experiences of one human soul. Brilliantly written and kind of inspiring. Constructed in a very unique manner and each character's voice is so strong and relatable regardless of what gender, time or country they are in. An amazing mix of sci-fi, historical fiction, action, and drama. Loved every word.

Cloud Atlas, a multi-genre multi-story novel, intersects each story with the thread of a single soul surmising the self-imposed human conditions in different time periods. This award-winning novel delves deep into the human psyche to explore six characters. I enjoyed his Mitchell's uses of third-person internal dialogue.

I‘ve had a copy of this #1001books beauty on my shelf for years, but I‘m so happy I went with the audio, which is beautifully narrated by a full cast, including two of my favorites (Scott Brick & Kirby Heyborne).

Mitchell is brilliant, and has a clever way with words. I loved the structure of this book, but the cast of characters were just amazing. I loved each part of the story more than the last.

I can finally watch the movie!😂

I only mention because I just needed people to know how much I disliked that book 😜 But I can get behind, Theirs Eyes Were Watching God by Zoe‘s Neale Hurston and the mini series with Halle.

Magnificent. I spent a lot of time with this; read some of the sections twice, because they‘re all split up, to keep the threads going in my head (this made it much better than plowing on through).

I was stunned when I went back and read my old review for this, and how I only gave it 3 out of 5 stars. Now it‘s a solid 5 for me.

Obviously it connected differently for me this time around, the themes far more powerful than I recall.

Cathythoughts My husband is about to start this one .. I must read him your review 👍🏻 (edited) 2y

I was planning to rewatch this movie for the first time since it came out in theaters....

I remember it had a huge impact on me then. I had read the book before seeing it, and it also had a huge impact on me; I loved it, and have held it in high regard since.

And now I have an itch to reread the novel before I rewatch the movie—mostly to see if I still find it as good as I recall.

So far, it is. Mitchell is a virtuoso writer. Unreal prose.

Cathythoughts I love Bone Clocks , but I bailed on Cloud Atlas..... maybe I need to try again 👍🏻 2y

Halfway through and this is another tedious book where the author wants you to know how clever they are. Gave up at the point where the style switched from literary fiction to dystopian Sci fi, just to show you that he can.

Was reading this for the Penguin 20 to read before you turn 40 challenge - I've turned 40, I'm running out of time to read the books I want to read, and a lot of the books on this marketing exercise are really unenjoyable.

TrishB This is his best for me. Still clever but a fab story too. 2y

Planned finishing this novel forever, and have to confess that my expectations maybe got the better of me. It did finish a bit on the nose, didn‘t it? I really enjoyed the concept, style(s) and dense layers -both as single narratives and as a whole- but the final message was driven home a bit too pathetically for my tatse. Its aftertaste suggests the whole effort to be an obvious attempt at writing A TIMELESS EPIC, which i hope would be unjust.

The first half of this book is utterly confusing since every story cuts out half way through and the exact middle of the book (which is the end actually) is told in one piece in a crazy, futuristic patois. But once the reader gets to the end, it all comes together...BOOM! I loved this book!

I took a hard left from fanfic and visual novels into this modern classic. I was entranced by the movie back in the day. I‘ll never forget recommending it to a woman who showed up at the theater I worked at in tears because both her daughters had been diagnosed with cancer and she wanted to see something but didn‘t know what. She stopped by afterward to thank me for the recommendation, saying it was just what she needed. #cyoreadathon #storiesheal

Clearer and way easier to follow than the film. But tension or curiosity did only arise sporadically. Too often I felt the stories were incredibly lengthy.

The changes between the stories and epochs, and between the different styles of writing and narrative didn‘t work as cliffhangers for me, instead they made it seem that the author was only concerned with proving his genius.

Yeah, the idea is cool but the crafting is not my cup of tea.

Can‘t believe I haven‘t been here since last Sunday. 😯
I only remember a busy week. Lots of working, lots of chores and again some paperwork that I couldn‘t motivate myself to check off my list during workdays.

But listening while doing other things simultaneously is easy, so I made good progress. But I‘m struggling a bit. I always need quite a lot of time to find back into the various plotlines. Not uninteresting but a bit lengthy, isn‘t it❓

BookishMe Hope it's a restful weekend for you 3y
Jari-chan This book needs quite some attention. I would only listen to the audio book if my mind wouldn't be occupied with something else. But maybe that's just me 😅 3y
Buechersuechtling @Jari-chan No it‘s not. I quickly changed tactics from “Everything I do” to “monotone stuff” like cutting vegetables, dusting off and lunch break. This worked well because it also replaced my evening reading that I was to exhausted for. 3y
Jari-chan @Buechersuechtling That sounds like a good strategy! Hopefully, you'll enjoy the book a bit more now 😊 3y

Oh. Just started part 3.
Part 2 accompanied me through the night after my hayfever wasn‘t deliberately letting me go back to sleep in the early morning.

I found myself more interested in Robert Forbisher, Ayrs and what they think about music than I was in Adam Ewing and that doctor.

Part 3 presents the first female protagonist. 🙌🏼 Change of times. 😄

Additionally, I remember enough from the film to recognise some foreshadowing. Nice.

Such an imaginative and powerful book! I think I need to read more books like this in my life.

Buechersuechtling Silly question but is this the book they took as inspiration for the film with the same title❓ I saw it at the cinema and must admit that I had problems understanding certain aspects of it. Since that time I once in a while wonder if I should try and read the book. Is it worth it or is it as complex and here and there are complicated and confusing as the film has been❓ 3y
KendallHershey @Buechersuechtling not a silly question at all! I had the same issue with the movie, I found myself terribly confused. It is based off of this book, but I found the book more clear cut. Of course there‘s still some aspect of - wait what‘s going on? Hahaha but I still loved the book! Definitely not as complex as the movie in my opinion. 3y
Zoes_Human @Buechersuechtling I agree with Kendall. I loved the book, but I didn't like the movie for several reasons. One of which was that I felt it would have been completely confusing if I hadn't come to it with the full knowledge of the book. 3y
