The Measure
The Measure | Nikki Erlick
Eight ordinary people. One extraordinary choice.
It seems like any other day. You wake up, pour a cup of coffee, and head out.
But today, when you open your front door, waiting for you is a small wooden box. This box holds your fate inside: the answer to the exact number of years you will live.
From suburban doorsteps to desert tents, every person on every continent receives the same box. In an instant, the world is thrust into a collective frenzy. Where did these boxes come from? What do they mean? Is there truth to what they promise?
As society comes together and pulls apart, everyone faces the same shocking choice: Do they wish to know how long they’ll live? And, if so, what will they do with that knowledge?
The Measure charts the dawn of this new world through an unforgettable cast of characters whose decisions and fates interweave with one another: best friends whose dreams are forever entwined, pen pals finding refuge in the unknown, a couple who thought they didn’t have to rush, a doctor who cannot save himself, and a politician whose box becomes the powder keg that ultimately changes everything.
Enchanting and deeply uplifting, The Measure is a sweeping, ambitious, and invigorating story about family, friendship, hope, and destiny that encourages us to live life to the fullest.

The Measure follows multiple characters as they deal with the knowledge of the length of their life remaining. One day everyone worldwide over the age of 22 receives a box with a string showing the length of their life and from his point people are separated into two groups the short strings and long strings. The book was emotional and really made you think.

This has one of the best premises I have heard in a long time. One day everyone in the world awakens to a box with a string inside that determines the length of the person‘s life. The author glides over the how and why the strings appeared, and gets right to describing the fallout from this information. The book shifts between the various characters‘ perspectives and raises many questions. Excellent for book club discussions.

☀️ I think it would have to be The Measure by Nikki Erlick!

☀️ I really loved the characters, but my favorite aspect of the book was actually the questions it made me ask myself! I did a lot of introspective thinking while reading it, and I'm still thinking about it even after I've finished the book!

Thank you for the tag @RaeLovesToRead ! 💕📚

This book has received so much praise and I can understand because there's a lot about it that I truly loved. However, about midway through I just got a little tired of "the strings" and wished the author had chosen something a little more substantial to be in the box.

I loved the premise though and the exploration of prejudices that arise when the boxes are discovered.

Book 112

The Measure, by Nikki Erlick, is a dystopian novel in which every adult unexplainably receives a box holding a measure of string that correlates with the length of the owner's life. Some choose to look at their string, others are forced to look, and some never look. The eight characters' lives all intertwine, in far-fetched ways. A great impetus for discussion about mortality, but the characters and book could have been stronger. 3.5

This debut starts with all the characters and everyone in the world receiving a box with a lone string inside. Each string are of different lengths. It doesn‘t take long for the world to realize that the length of the string is the length of the recipient‘s life. Soon after there is prejudice against those with short strings. This read real gives me the feelings of the political climate of 2020.

I liked this. Was concerned it might be a bit sentimental for my mood, but it mostly wasn't. I really liked the characters and enjoyed their interconnections (which often gave me Love Actually vibes, but not in the cringey way). Lovely Julia Whelan narration.

Read with Jenna picks are usually winners for me, and this one is no exception. It‘s a really interesting look at human relationships and time and how divisive we can be when we feel threatened. The connections between the characters at the end felt a little forced for my liking, BUT it‘s a book about “strings,” thus connections and I get it. An absolute pick in my book! 🌟

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A small chest appears on your porch bearing an indestructible string that represents your life span. Do you open it? Is it even real? Who sent these dastardly things? It‘s a societal disruption of epic proportions. Ethics and morals are questioned. Certain lots are ostracized. An incredible piece of speculative fiction! Very different than anything I‘ve ever read. Thorough, layered, and thoughtful. Can‘t stop thinking about it. ⬇️

This was really thought-provoking! The premise is that one day everyone over age 22 gets a mysterious box with a string that shows the length of their lives. It would be a great book to read with a book club. I‘m still thinking about the questions in this book! It uses several connected characters to show what makes a measure of a life.

Bailedbailed

Well… just as I said it was good, it turns out I don‘t care for this anymore. To me, the whole short string and long string spiel is kind of cheesy and cringeworthy. Plus, the writing is meh. Lastly, one thing that was bugging me, was that on almost every page, there was at least one word that was italicized and it got really annoying. If I knew I wasn‘t going to like this I wouldn‘t have paid full price for this. Definitely a #BorrownotBuy.

TheRiehlDeal 😬😬 50%?! Who knew a bail rating could be so destructive to a Pick rating. I know it‘s still early, but I hate to be the one that didn‘t like a book, while others enjoyed it. 2mo

Suddenly around the world, every adult receives a box with a piece of string. Turns out the length equates to how long they‘ll live. This could so easily be sappy or maudlin but it‘s not at all. Instead, Erlick uses this premise to explore mortality, prejudice and more. I really liked this.

shanaqui Huh. I wouldn't have figured it'd turn out that good based on the premise, somehow -- I don't know why that automatically reads to me as “meh“! 2mo

If a box arrived on your doorstep containing a string that represented the length of your life, would you open it?

When boxes arrive overnight to all individuals over 22 years old, everyone has to struggle with a momentous decision: to open or not to open. This book was a fascinating read on humanity and how quick we are to segregate ourselves into groups. I loved how every single moment wove the various narratives together in subtle ways.

This interesting SciFi debut took a sappy turn at the end but is still a strong pick.

Everyone on Earth over 22 receives a box with a string that measures the length of their life. Suddenly, the world is divided into “short stringers” and “long stringers” with sometimes dangerous results. This book follows intertwined NYCers as they navigate the world‘s changing landscape. I like that she focused on reactions rather than why the strings appeared.

Cinfhen Great review!!! I agree, it‘s an interesting choice not to focus on the strings arrival. 3mo

This book looks at: What if everyone in the world knew exactly when (not how) their life would end? How would humanity handle that? Does that change what the meaning/measure of your life is?

A beautiful, thought provoking, compassionate, heartbreaking book. This is one of those books that grabs your heart and doesn't let go. It also gives concepts that I don't think I will start thinking about for a while.

LOVED this book!! How would you live your life if you knew when it was going to end?? Would you even want to know?? This starts when every O‘22 in the world is delivered a 3x6” box with a string indicating their lifespan. There‘s a political power sub story when Anthony Rollins is every politician we fear. My interest though was the intriguing character study with a collection of likable Short- and Long-stringers whose lives weave together in a fascinating way - and made me cry.
