The Immortalists
The Immortalists | Chloe Benjamin
It's 1969, and holed up in a grimy tenement building in New York's Lower East Side is a travelling psychic who claims to be able to tell anyone the date they will die. Four siblings, too young for what they are about to hear, sneak out to hear their fortunes. We then follow the intertwined paths the siblings take over the course of five decades and, in particular, how they choose to live with the supposed knowledge the fortune-teller gave them that day. This is a story about life, mortality and the choices we make: is it better to live a long and cautious life, or to burn brightly, but for the shortest time?

Excellent, thought-provoking read. The characters are realistically flawed and I found each of them relatable as their stories were told.

This book left me with this thought: No one can haunt us more successfully than we can haunt ourselves.

I will look Ms Benjamin‘s other work.

BennettBookworm So true. This book leaves a lasting impression! 1d
Ericalambbrown @BennettBookworm I liked this one more than I expected to. I‘d read some criticism that made me wonder about it, but I‘m so glad I gave it a go. 1d

I can‘t decide if I want to give this ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 or ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. It was such an interesting premise and each of the four main characters were so different that it was fun to get to know each of them in their sections of the book. I haven‘t decided what I think of the ending, yet. Over all, it was a great read.

I liked Simon's and Klara's stories - they were unconventional, reckless, and yes, foolish - but they were pursuing their dreams. The pace ground to a halt for me with Daniel's story. I found myself impatient with Daniel and Varya because when we get to them it feels as if it is after the vital part of their lives is behind them or that it was never lived.

It's ok so far but I'm realizing that maybe I am in the mood for something different - something a little more fantastical. Interesting to read about San Francisco in the late 70s though to compare what the Mission District was like then compared to now.

⭐⭐⭐Ok! This took me way to long to finish. It was not what I expected. I had hoped it would be ... different. There were some good parts but I feel it's lacking. Sorry if you loved it.

Great until the last fifty pages when it seemed to fizzle out to a less than satisfying conclusion. Lovely writing and fascinating story, until the ending.

No one lives forever if they have been frightened out of their childhood wits by a spooky gypsy who predicts their future death date. The format of spooling out the four siblings stories as separate sections proves to be perfect. So much for a book club discussion with everyone finding a character to love, hate, and relate to. Plenty of surprises. The ride these 4 take to seek and avoid their fates is fantastic.

Not working at a library anymore, I don‘t get a lot of book recommendations these days, so finding new stuff is more of a challenge. I picked this one because I liked the title, and so far it‘s great (1/4 way done). If anyone has any good recommendations, especially for audiobooks, I‘m all ears (pun sort of intended)!!

I loved this book so much more than I expected to! Each character‘s story was intriguing in its own way, with both happy and sad events. Every time I started to get bored with the story something newly exciting happened or we changed characters and got a brand new story. I didn‘t think Varya was very interesting as a character, I somewhat liked Daniel but I loved Simon and Klara.

For me, this was mostly a pick, although I did have some issues with it. I don't appreciate much sex in my reading, so I was a bit put off by Simon's story. Since his was the first, I expected there would be similar intimate scenes for all of the siblings, but there weren't. To me, that just made the description of Simon's sex life even more gratuitous. (I do realize that sex was a big factor in Simon's fate, but I think it could have been ⤵️⤵️

cherinium presented in a less graphic way.) My other issue was thatvI just did not care about any of the characters. They were all extremely unlikable to me. Overall, I give it a pick for its thought provoking topic and for keeping me mostly interested. 2mo

I have to admit that the first quarter of the book wasn't very interesting to me, it just felt slow. I absolutely fell in love with Klara and her story, and from there I was hooked. Disappointing. Each section seemed weaker than the last—and no one section was especially strong because there was little time to tell each character‘s story (with minimal overlap even though they were siblings).

Benjamin seemed more interested in proving that she knew the times and places she was writing about. Her acknowledgments included information on her research, which I found irksome: I wish she had cared more for her characters. ⭐️⭐️

How would life change if you knew exactly when you would die? 4 children sneakily see a fortune teller whom they‘ve been told can predict the date of their death with certainty. They meet with her individually and leave very shaken. Is it predetermined fate that decides timing of their deaths or are they taking actions/making decisions that lead to self-fulfillment of the prophecy? The book also explores the push/pull of family obligations/ties.
