Here‘s my this or that for #HauntedHollowsSwap. I tend to go more towards dark fantasy or paranormal base, rather than straight horror. The tag book is one of my favorite by one of my favorite authors.

What was the last 5 star book you read this year? Mine is Slewfoot by Brom
A little brutal but absolutely loving the vibez
Books Ive read On the Left And my TBR shelf on the right
My October favorite was Slewfoot by Brom - great audiobook, but also beautiful artwork in the physical book.
My November favorite was Babel by R.F. Kuang - a speculative historical fiction novel with fantasy elements.
#12Booksof2022
I found this beautifully designed book troubling. The story, highlighting the evil that men do when faced with “the other” is not an original one, but the author introduces new bits. What troubled me is that we are left with a simplistic and horrible choice: to be a victim, or the victimizer. I like to think that life‘s offers many divergent paths and that we can turn away from violence, toward hope. The illustrated plates are magnificent.
Omg😍 This was the folk horror book I didn‘t know I needed. I‘ve learned a lot about the witch trials, but it‘s truly horrifying to see one unfold and know it really did happen (just without Slewfoot and the bloody vengeance part :). The characters, the plot, the setting, everything was so well done. I was rooting for Abitha and Samson all the way to the very end. And what an ending.
This was a difficult choice because I had a good number of 5⭐️ books this month. However, I‘m still thinking about Slewfoot, such an original take on historical fantasy. #2022ReadingBracket
This was excellent. A historical horror taking place in puritan New England with pagan folklore. Brom also does the artwork throughout the book which is beautiful. It also has a highly satisfying conclusion. I highly recommend! 5⭐️

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC BOOK!
Connecticut, 1666.
Abitha, a recent widow, outcast and vulnerable and then there is an ancient spirit. Suddenly people are dying, then there‘s the rumors: witch! This is a fantastic and terrifying tale and has some great painting inside by the author himself. 5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I enjoyed this book! The hardcover has a small new B&W piece of art at the start of every chapter plus 8 glossy pages of artwork bound within the center of the book.
Good book, really nice hardcover.
EEKK!!🥹
I have had my eye on Slewfoot for QUITE some time let me tell ya!😂 And I didn‘t even know there were additional photos included😍
Also didn‘t realize TMSC was by Moldavsky when I ordered it - even more excited to read it after Kill The Boy Band👏🏻
& Shutter is giving me super creepy vibes👌🏼
I'm a big fan of this author and his art work. In Brom's latest, a Puritan widow is abused by her village leading her to vengeance with the aid of dark pagan deities that personifies the devil himself. Slight feminist overtones mixed with the Salem witch trials makes this a fun, page turner
4.4⭐️ “I am the shepherd and I am the slayer. I am life and I am death.” This Book sent me on a roller coaster of emotions. I had so many feels, and at one point I wanted to throw the book across the room. OK… I had that feeling more than once.It was disturbing, creepy and just wrong but in all the right ways.
Able to get away with some covert reading at my office today thanks for the super awesome book cover that @LibrarianRyan Gave to me during our Halloween swaps. Seriously one of the best things that I‘ve ever gotten… Thank you
I couldn‘t put this book down. If you love folk horror this one is for you. But it‘s still a nuanced story. It‘s not just scary. I felt a wide range of emotions reading this. But that‘s all I‘ll say because I don‘t want to spoil anything. And the artwork throughout the book really brought the story to life. Slewfoot is a work of art.

Time for the last bullet journal spread of 2021. I like to make a yearly wrap up to recap each year. This year I read 89 books, which beat my goal of 85. I bought less books, but I spent more money. So I‘ve got to work on that next year. But overall, it was a successful reading year.
I‘ve really enjoyed growing the blog and meeting so many great people! You guys have made this year awesome! I hope y‘all have a happy, healthy 2022!
A fantastic tale of Puritan New England, this dark & fantastical story had me giddy. No subtle & quiet tale of witchery, this is horror with devilry & destruction. It is dark & brutal with moments of serious gore. The plot can be a little slow in places, but it is still a great story with a morally DARK gray protagonist. It's always a weird feeling to root for such a protagonist, but oh it was a delicious read. I regret nothing.
I love browsing Barnes & Noble and finding books that im not familiar with but are right up my alley! The story and pictures look amazing!
It‘s that time of year to start making Christmas wishlists. I‘m a list maker by heart. It‘s how I function day-to-day. So making my Christmas wishlist is always fun. Here are a few books that I‘ve added to my bookish wishlist this year.
Slewfoot
Leviathan Wakes
Cytonic
The Name of the Wind
The Lies of Locke Lamora
Have you added any books to your wishlist?
I started out engaged by Abitha‘s plight . . . until the story took an irrecoverable turn. Read my full review here: https://debbybrauer.org/#slewfoot-a-tale-of-bewitchery
Definitely judge this one by its (awesome) cover. Brom‘s very orginal, very dark tale of witchery in 1600s colonial America is brilliant, but be warned that the scariest characters here are the Puritans. 😱

Two spooky library holds came on for me today! I hope I can finish them by the end of the weekend! 🍁🎃🍁
What are you reading in preparation of Halloween? Right now I‘m reading Slewfoot: A Tale of Bewitchery by Brom.
“Set in Colonial New England, Slewfoot is a tale of magic and mystery, of triumph and terror as only dark fantasist Brom can tell it.” — Publisher, Tor Nightfire
Have you read it?

Book 10 for the October themed reads. This one! OMG the story is so good. Unfortunately it‘s hard to describe without giving the story away so I‘ll just say worth picking up! Story and artwork are amazing!
#LittensDressedInBlood Today's prompt is Room on the Broom
This one is on my TBR pile, so I thought I'd use it as today's picture.
#Scarathlon @clwojick #TeamSlaughter
The most terrifying part of the book is the Puritans. They are so rigid and judgmental. I can‘t imagine living in a society like that, where everyone watches each other for the slightest transgression. The writing is atmospheric and made me feel I was there with Abitha. The story moves along steadily but a little slowly. The pacing was fine with me as I really enjoyed just reading about life at that time.
I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new - don‘t judge me I have a lot of books.
Join the fun if you want. This is day 265.

hmm…what should I read next 🤔 🍁
🎧 Abitha‘s an outspoken (bit snarky) young English lass shipped off to Puritan America to marry a man 10yrs her senior.
She‘s a subtle witch, making charms & casting small spells but an outspoken free spirit! She‘s a handful for a sweet sheepish man who‘s brother walks all over him. They live on a farm in the middle of no where that the evil brother owns even though it‘s part of an inheritance. 1 more loan payment & it‘s theirs!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️3/4👇🏻
I just preordered a signed 1st edition of this book for my baby sister! She is a huge fan of Brom (she named her kitty after him haha) but she doesn‘t follow the book circles like I do, so when the opportunity to purchase a signed book by him popped up I knew I had to grab one for her. It will be her first ever signed book and I know it being by Brom she will be so excited! I can‘t wait for Sept to get here so I can see her reaction!
Brom has a new book coming out! ❤
