Slewfoot
Slewfoot: A Tale of Bewitchery | Brom
Set in Colonial New England, Slewfoot is a tale of magic and mystery, of triumph and terror as only dark fantasist Brom can tell it. Connecticut, 1666. An ancient spirit awakens in a dark wood. The wildfolk call him Father, slayer, protector. The colonists call him Slewfoot, demon, devil. To Abitha, a recently widowed outcast, alone and vulnerable in her pious village, he is the only one she can turn to for help. Together, they ignite a battle between pagan and Puritan one that threatens to destroy the entire village, leaving nothing but ashes and bloodshed in their wake. If it is a devil you seek, then it is a devil you shall have! This terrifying tale of bewitchery features more than two dozen of Broms haunting paintings, fully immersing readers in this wild and unforgiving world. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

You'll see all my thoughts in this little envelope, and I also left some blank sheets for you all to write your thoughts as well. But just so you all know, I absolutely LOVED this book. It was just so full of imaginative creepy beings and a strong female lead. I am so happy to get to share this book with you all! I'll be sending it off to @suvata sometime next week!

Lin3han I just finished this book a couple weeks ago and I LOVED it! 3w
KateReadsYA @Lin3han Abitha made every decision I would have made myself, and I love her for that! Brom is amazing in his writing. 3w
KateReadsYA @Lin3han A perfect book to read if you want something similar is this one! I will read anything by Alexis Henderson without even reading the back cover. 🖤 3w
Lin3han @KateReadsYA omg thank you!!! Stacked! I tend to get obsessed with topics like witch trials. This one is a historical fiction of the first woman accused in the Salem Witch Trials! 3w

I'm really excited to read all of our picks! Started my read today, and it's got all the religious gothic creepy vibes you could ever want! 20 pages in and women are not to speak unless spoken to, if you miss church you will be put in the stocks, so forth and so on....I'm hoping for a demented comeback on all the puritans who have wronged anyone!!!!! 🤘🖤🐐🪦

Slewfoot was a wonderful balance between joy and horror. I‘ve always had an odd obsession with the Salem Witch Trials and this book had all the elements of interest. It had the most satisfying ending! 4.5/5!

Maybe it‘s because I‘m not a fan of the VVitch, which this book reminded me a LOT of, but it just didn‘t do it for me. It was so slow and while I did enjoy the ending, it didn‘t make up for how slow it was.

1. I only read one book this month (technically, I don‘t count all the things I‘ve read for training) so it has to be Slewfoot.
2. Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief! I haven‘t reread it since middle school and with the show coming out, I‘d love a refresher.

Readergrrl I‘m so excited! I just finished Slewfoot and I really loved it! It reminds me a lot of the film, The Witch, with Anya Taylor-Joy. I enjoy making those bookmarks too! My November favorite was Babel by R.F. Kuang - a speculative historical fiction novel with fantasy elements.

I found this beautifully designed book troubling. The story, highlighting the evil that men do when faced with “the other” is not an original one, but the author introduces new bits. What troubled me is that we are left with a simplistic and horrible choice: to be a victim, or the victimizer. I like to think that life‘s offers many divergent paths and that we can turn away from violence, toward hope. The illustrated plates are magnificent.

Omg😍 This was the folk horror book I didn‘t know I needed. I‘ve learned a lot about the witch trials, but it‘s truly horrifying to see one unfold and know it really did happen (just without Slewfoot and the bloody vengeance part :). The characters, the plot, the setting, everything was so well done. I was rooting for Abitha and Samson all the way to the very end. And what an ending.

I'm a big fan of this author and his art work. In Brom's latest, a Puritan widow is abused by her village leading her to vengeance with the aid of dark pagan deities that personifies the devil himself. Slight feminist overtones mixed with the Salem witch trials makes this a fun, page turner

But that‘s all I‘ll say because I don‘t want to spoil anything. And the artwork throughout the book really brought the story to life. Slewfoot is a work of art.

A fantastic tale of Puritan New England, this dark & fantastical story had me giddy. No subtle & quiet tale of witchery, this is horror with devilry & destruction. It is dark & brutal with moments of serious gore. The plot can be a little slow in places, but it is still a great story with a morally DARK gray protagonist. It's always a weird feeling to root for such a protagonist, but oh it was a delicious read. I regret nothing.

Definitely judge this one by its (awesome) cover. Brom‘s very orginal, very dark tale of witchery in 1600s colonial America is brilliant, but be warned that the scariest characters here are the Puritans. 😱

The most terrifying part of the book is the Puritans. They are so rigid and judgmental. I can‘t imagine living in a society like that, where everyone watches each other for the slightest transgression. The writing is atmospheric and made me feel I was there with Abitha. The story moves along steadily but a little slowly. The pacing was fine with me as I really enjoyed just reading about life at that time.
