Audiobook pick:
I enjoyed this horror/fantasy novel, it's a weird little gem of a book. Now I want a goofy, yet loving uncle with a Wonder Museum and sassy cat.

I didn't find this as engaging and fast paced as I expected it to be. The premise was cool but didn't hook me in like I wanted. I did enjoy Simon and Kara and their banter made me laugh several times. ⭐⭐⭐

I was sadly disappointed in this. It had some creepy moments, most of it fell flat. I appreciate the fact that the cat didn‘t die. I did like he characters for the most part, even though some of Cara‘s decision making was laughably bad. #moremehthanyay #borrownotbuy (Also, the digital version has been on my NetGalley queue for more than a year, so Yay! for clearing some of that backlog!)

This was a quick, twisted read! Not overly scary, definitely weird, and much funnier than I was expecting. I loved the main character, who most people called Carrot, as well as her friend and neighbor, Simon. They were unlikely partners, thrust into a terrible and cruel world, forced to find their way back to civilization. Wasn‘t what I was expecting but still good. 🌟🌟🌟🌟. 16 pts for #teamslaughter #scarathlon2021 and for all the readathons 😉

4¼⭐ | NARRATION 😁=Very Good | Narrated by📣Hilary Huber
This was really flipping weird, but something about it worked for me because I liked it more than I did The Twisted Ones. It touches on so many different elements including alternate realities within parallel worlds. With some gruesome body-type horror but it‘s intermixed with some humor to keep some levity. Overall, this was equal parts fun, and freakish. A perfect Halloween read/listen.

This had some pacing issues and I wish there were more creepiness and I wish more time was spent in the willows but the mystery kept me locked in and I loved the humor. When it was creepy and suspenseful is when this was at its best. The parts that were creepy were really creepy. I just wanted more creepy lol this was still fun though !!

This book was...strange, but I ❤️ strange books! 🤪 There's some weirdly intriguing things happening to Carrot, all while she's running the Wonder Museum, since Uncle Earl's having knee surgery. Although intriguing doesn't necessarily mean good. Things become tense and nightmarish quicky. Can Carrot survive long enough to make it through the ordeal...and in one piece?

While I did think this book had some issues with pacing, I still found it pretty fun. Kara and Simon made a great duo, and I enjoyed the humor more than I expected. Also, Beau is ❤️❤️❤️ He kept reminding me of my childhood cat Flower (pictured above 🐱❤️).

My most recent read was The Hollow Places by T. Kingfisher.

Kara‘s uncle owns a quirky museum of oddities. While closing up one night, she finds a passage in the wall leading to other dimensions full of strange, disturbing creatures. So begins her adventure.

This story is unsettling, surprisingly hilarious, weirdly imaginative, and just so much fun👍👍 I absolutely loved the dialogue in this book. So many great lines.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I had so much fun reading this one! Definitely creepy and weird although not until about 80 pages in. It‘s about a newly divorced Kara moving into a room at her uncle‘s place which is a museum of all sorts of oddities. And of course soon after she moves in, a portal to another world (not a friendly one) opens up in one of the rooms…as you can imagine Kara (and her friend Simon) decide to explore… 😬

Dang, this one kept me up way past the time I should have been sleeping. It isn't a perfect book -- the pacing was uneven and took a bit to build rhythm, and the writing was sometimes on the repetitive side of circular -- but oh dang did I love the atmosphere. There are bits of horrific creativity here that I will read over and over again. Pick.

🎧 I‘ve sat on this review for a couple days because I‘m not sure how to describe this book. Looking for a fun horror?

I loved it. It‘s quirky, silly, horror. I loved Kara & Simon. They have a fun snarky believable rapport. The dialog flows. The pacing is fast.

It‘s basically portal/multiverse but it feels so unique.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 👇🏻

Twainy Kara got a divorce & went to live at her uncle‘s oddity museum to do inventory and heal. She gets the barista at the adjacent coffee shop, Simon to help her with a drywall problem & that‘s when strange creepiness ensues. It‘s totally over the top & I loved it!!! 👇🏻 6mo

Reggie Lol, yeah, this one threw me off a little at first because I didn‘t expect it to be so funny. And by the end there is some really frightening stuff happening but then her husband will tag her on social media with something so dumb. Like she‘s already over it and he wants forgiveness or something. It just had me laughing. Have you checked out the giant otters hunting sound that sounds like children laughing? It‘s freaky. 6mo
Twainy @llcoolnate it‘s definitely weird 😁 6mo
Twainy @Reggie nope but I will now. This was a silly book. That feeling when you know what‘s going on right before Kara figures it out & you‘re thinking, nooooo LOL 6mo

Kara moves into her ailing uncle's oddity museum after her divorce. One day she finds a hole that has been knocked into the wall...through it, she discovers an impossibly long hallway and eventually another dimension. I loved the concept and I thought it was overall decent. The reason I'm giving it a so-so is that I don't know if I would recommend it to someone. I wanted more out of it, I feel like it was a bit convoluted at times.

I'm at the point where I'll read any horror novel T. Kingfisher writes - and I really hope she continues with the genre! I do think I like The Twisted Ones better, even if that story did give me nightmares... The Hollow Places was also creepy in a really fun way, had fantastic side characters and the same irreverent humor I enjoyed in The Twisted Ones.

I just flew through this book. It was kind of haunting and creepy and had a bit of a Lovecraft feel to it. The ambience was so well done, and I actually felt really tense reading certain passages. There was great build and I was so curious to see where it went. The imagery that the writing evoked was totally vivid for me, and I definitely want to check out the other horror novel by this author.

This book is really weird but in a good way. The writing style and descriptions were fabulous, the pacing and execution were superb, and the idea was wholly original. It would have earned 5 stars from me but it was plagued by one of my pet peeves: lack of clarification as to "why?" I would like to read more by this author. It seems as though her brain has some unique gears running at different speeds.

This was a great read! I really loved it. Creepy in an ominous, atmospheric, holy-shit kind of way. Not gory but anxiety provoking. Similar in theme to Dark Matter, but that's where the similarities end. The protagonist is so fantastic. The internal monologue and then the dry humor and snark. It breathed life into my soul.

The more I think about this book the more I like it. I gave it a hard time at first because just by looking at the cover I was expecting something dark and atmospheric but what I got was more Shaun of the Dead. I haven‘t laughed this hard on a book in a while. Kara, “Carrot” to family and friends, is recently divorced and has moved into her Uncle Earl‘s Museum of Wonders. While working there she will discover a portal to a place that connects👇🏼

Reggie other planets and universes. But she‘ll soon find out horror inhabits this place. There was a great cast of rotating supporting characters including a cat named Beau. Kara herself is hilarious. This was a nice mix of comedy, horror, and fantasy/sci-fi. Pick! 14mo

Super creepy horror. Perfect for the Halloween season. I love that this book introduces on the first page the Glory to God Museum of Natural Wonders, Curiosities and Taxidermy and the museum is the least of the horrors (for more on this see spoiler below). But, the plot was largely limited to the horror and I would have liked more story to the story, if u catch my meaning. #ARC #netgalley

Well-ReadNeck Well, at least for a bit. Because, the rule applies, if you introduce a gun in act I, it must go off before the curtain falls. So must the Taxidermy be menacing. 1y

Kara (Carrot) & Simon are great characters. They are real & relatable, fun & enjoyable. The atmosphere is magnificent. I don't get scared by books often, but this bordered on freezer read. 4 💫💫💫💫 I enjoyed this novel, funny, unique storyline fun characters too, but for me at times some parts dragged on without any purpose. Suspenseful parts lasting too long irritates me. It had a satisfying ending. Not scary, I felt it was more a scifi with a bit of horror than anything else. Fowl language at times but seems to be typical for books like these.

Happy Publication Day to this terrific and rather spookily fun read! Set in the delightfully kitschy Wonder Museum run by Kara‘s Uncle Earl, where she head‘s post-divorce, the museum soon takes on a more sinister air. Exciting while also being humorous and scary, this is a fast-paced read that follows in the footsteps of other world-bending journeys. Overall, I didn‘t find the story to be especially engrossing, but it had its absorbing moments. I think it fits horror more for its gruesome content than its scariness. Although I don‘t think it‘s the stuff nightmares are made of, if you like fun, campy reads that gross you out a little bit, you might want to pick up a copy of The Hollow Places for yourself.
