But when Plum notices shes being followed by a mysterious woman in colorful tights and combat boots, she finds herself falling down a rabbit hole into the world of Calliope House, a community of women who live life on their own terms. Reluctant but intrigued, Plum agrees to a series of challenges that force her to deal with the real costs of becoming beautiful. The consequences are explosive. Part coming-of-age story, part revenge fantasy, Dietland is a bold, original, and funny debut novel that takes on the beauty industry, gender inequality, and our weight loss obsessionfrom the inside out, and with fists flying.

This was much darker than I expected! Really speaks to the heart of “diet culture” and how it slots in to the male gaze/misogyny. Not for the faint of heart.

And yes, that‘s my work desk. Solidarity. 😆💪🏻🤷🏻‍♀️

This book made me mad! The main character is not a very nice person. She sees no good in others, judges others extremely harshly and then is defensive when others judge her. The author makes everyone in this book who looks "normal" into nasty people and portrays only those with scars or other physical anomalies as caring. As a woman of size myself, sure there are mean people in the world - but there are plenty of wonderful ones too!
Continued..

ShelleyBooksie The secondary storyline does not match with the rest of the book and is violent and distracting. 4y

You have no idea how badly I wish we were in the same room discussing this book because I have thoughts and words and none of them are good

I'm sorry but I hated this book. I mean, it started out ok but between the piss poor, self sabotage attitude, the sick vigilante feminist wannabes and the general bullshit of people and the world in general - I just can't. I get the message but it needs a better messenger.

Hope you all have a better time

Is this book comically extreme? Yes. Does it still have good message? Yes.

According to a documentary I watched, 40% of porn depicts violence against women. In this book, turning the violence towards the men is interesting, if not the correct approach.

My fav plus size blogger took to Insta to talk about health and how there‘s camp “weight loss” and camp “eat whatever” in the community, and I agree. She said, ignore that, choose health, ⬇️

Megabooks ⬆️ whatever that means for your diet, exercise, and weight. I know that seems obvious to some of you, but it‘s not as straightforward in the plus size community, and this book upends the notion that weight is directly tied to health and self-esteem, too. 4.5⭐️ #August (edited) 4y
Kalalalatja Great review! 4y

cdcnmac Loved the show too🤓 4y
Megabooks @mrp27 it is. I remember reviews when it came out that didn‘t get the point was to take it a step too far in killing rapists and revenge pornographers and making a fat character that carried a brick and stole. I think plus size bloggers have to be relentlessly positive to prove they aren‘t giving into the trolls, and it was good to see an MC who got angry. Also, after watching a few documentaries, I think the young women who get into this ⬇️ 4y
Megabooks @mrp27 this, often pro-am porn, that portrays violence against women are sold a bill of fame and then used and tossed aside for more and more fresh girls. It was just really sad to see. 4y
Megabooks @cdcnmac I never watched it. I can‘t concentrate on tv the way I can on books. 4y
cdcnmac 👍 4y
Hooked_on_books I don‘t remember any details of this book, just that I loved it. I hadn‘t expected to, so that was nice. 4y
Megabooks @Hooked_on_books yes, I read it when it came out, and I remember enjoying it. Totally glad I reread! 4y
Reggie I loved when she challenged that guy in the streets. 4y
Megabooks @Reggie yes!!! 4y
CarolynM I enjoyed this one too, although I'm not sure I fully understood it, especially towards the end. Do you think Plum and the woman following her were meant to be like the narrator and Tyler Durden in Fight Club? This only occurred to me because I read the author was inspired by Fight Club. 4y

I had high hopes for this book but it was a little #disappointing. It was touted as a great feminist novel, and it started strongly, with humorous attacks on the diet and beauty industries, but a poorly developed sub-plot in the second half, and a move toward almost misandry, suggests the author is not yet ready to execute the Great Feminist Novel.

At the 25% mark, I wasn't sure if I was going to finish it, but the story was just intriguing enough to hold my interest. I devoured the last half of the book and was completely drawn in by Plum's life and transformation!

CarolynM I liked this one too. What did you make of her comment about Fight Club in the author's note? Was she suggesting Plum and the stalker (I can't remember exactly how she was described in the book) were one and the same? 4y
WorldsOkayestStepMom @CarolynM I don't think so because Julia gave Leeta's journal over and it ended up in Plum's posession. 4y

3.5 or 4 ⭐ for me. Reminded me a lot of V for Vendetta, for the way a character is recalibrated from societal norms (in this case, cultural control of women's bodies, e.g. beauty/fashion/weight loss industry, male gaze, etc.) via a tortuous process. But the blurb compares it to Fight Club and the author includes Fight Club in the acknowledgements. I've only seen the movie, but I didn't see much similarity... 🤷‍♀️ maybe I should read the book.

Ok- is it wrong to say I felt a little like being a Jennifer would feel empowering? Wrong, yes but there is something cathartic about a revenge scenario! Loved Plum and the women of Caliope House. The return of power and freedom to those who have been without it for so long. Not the fluffy read I had assumed it was by the title- so much more!! Loved! Plum Kettle just wants to stay under the radar and not be noticed. Despite years of dieting, she is still overweight. She dreams of the day she can finally undergo bariatric surgery and drop the weight. Then she‘ll start her real life.

Meanwhile, bad men start disappearing. Their bodies turn up and an organization known only as Jennifer takes credit. Jennifer is every woman terrorized by rape culture. And she‘s pissed.
