Inaugurated
in 1892, paying homage to
Ocean Man — Victor.
Fun fact: “Ocean man" was a self-applied nickname Victor Hugo used to describe the male literary geniuses he admired, comparing their minds to the vastness of the ocean. The sea and natural world were a significant source of inspiration for his writing and artwork, particularly during his exile in the Channel Islands.

My sister is on vacation in Toulouse, France this week & she sent me some pics from Place Victor Hugo, so I thought I‘d share with my hive and those who #readLesMis — & of course, must write a haiku about it. ? If you zoom in on the street sign, it says Marché Victor Hugo (Victor Hugo Market).
Place Victor Hugo —
dreamy locale in the heart
of vibrant Toulouse. ??

It was a struggle at times finishing this. The main story and characters were exceptional and kept me going, but the lengthy philosophical tangents Hugo so often took made me at times almost forget what the story was about. 19 pages on “slang“. 15 pages on the “sewers of Paris“. And so many more. Still, the story makes it a worthwhile read. The ending is worth waiting for.
I‘m nearly 2 months behind on #readlesmis — spent a rainy afternoon at the bookstore yesterday with my sister, and she bought me this gorgeous copy of the book. Should definitely motivate me to get caught up this week!!
From my sister with
love, I WILL finish this
chunkster — wish me luck!

Thank goodness, I have a nice view or I would‘ve never survived all the flipping back & forth to the notes in back associated with this chapter!
Maybe someday I‘ll catch up with our readings !
This was more painful for me than Waterloo!

Spending my evening catching up on the #readlesmis read-a-long. Glad to be diving back into this even if I am ankle deep in a many-chapter denunciation of the convent way of life. Oh how Hugo loves his digressions! 😂
😝 Bandette is really enjoying reading Les MIs with me!

The “Collège des Quatre-Nations” (College of Four Nations) in Paris was established in 1661 by Cardinal Mazarin in his will. It was created to educate students from four territories that had recently come under French control through the Treaty of Westphalia (1648) and the Treaty of the Pyrenees (1659).

Fun facts about 2 of the Perrault brothers. Between 1667-1670 Claude designed the East façade of the Louvre & Charles published Tales of Mother Goose in 1697. ?️????

The translation of Les Miserables is around 1400 pages and never felt like a slog, not even once.

Today is catch up on buddy reads day.
This quote from yesterday‘s chapter has given me pause, something about it in light of current events resonates.

I‘m behind on my reading (April 13) since I‘ve been traveling on the weekends, so maybe I can get a little reading in at work! I‘m so thankful that Cossette is with Jean Valjean! 🇫🇷💙🤍❤️ 🇫🇷

After making it through the Battle of Waterloo (which tested my patience and nearly had me yelling MERDE on more than one occasion), I am back with Jean Valjean and eager to catch up with the schedule. #readlesmis

Flowers and coins for Victor Hugo. He shares a tomb with Alexandre Dumas and Emile Zola, but nobody‘d left anything for them as of early this afternoon. 😔 Hopefully they also receive cool presents and the Pantheon staff just clear them away periodically.
I‘m just gonna leave this right here. It is of course from Les Miserable by Victor Hugo!!!
