Sea of Tranquility: A Novel | Emily St. John Mandel
post image
Pickpick

This was my first time reading Emily St. John Mandel and she has a lovely way of writing.

While the book includes pandemics, time travel, space colonies and big questions (Are we living in a simulation?), the story‘s unfaltering focus on the human condition is what really captivated me.

For just a few days, this book was my constant companion. I will gladly read more by this author!

🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺 A young Hawaiian girl is taken from her family and sent to Kalaupapa, the quarantined leprosy settlement on the island of Moloka‘i. This is a wonderful story, one I won‘t soon forget. Finding the original sales receipt tucked inside the book was an added bonus. Purchased at S.F. International Airport on March 10, 2006. #historicalfiction 5/22

marleed Oh Iove to find an original receipt inside a thrifted book! I also loved this book and recently thrifted a copy of its sequel- still on my TBR. 3mo
cinda.marie @marleed I‘m also planning to read the sequel. Looking forward to it! (edited) 3mo

cinda.marie @UwannaPublishme I‘ll definitely leave the receipt for the next reader to find! 3mo
jimfields3 That‘s cool! I like to stick my receipts in the books, too. I still have one I bought in the early 90s. 3mo

It‘s always fun to come across a #littlefreelibrary in my town! I traded in for the tagged book and couldn‘t leave without straightening the books (which of course made my mom giggle). 😄

Mehso-so

“We‘re alone on an island, a storm is coming and there‘s a killer on the loose!” 😮 I‘m a fan of stories like this and The Sanatorium gets high marks for atmosphere and a likable lead character. Unfortunately, the conclusion was a little over-the-top so this one is a so-so for me. #bookspin 5/22

A story detailing marital abuse and the lengths someone will go to for control. The ending caught me off guard, but the craziest part (to me) involved the sister. I won‘t say more than that. If you like domestic thrillers, you‘ll probably enjoy this book.

This story was full of adventure and felt very much like reading an Indiana Jones movie. It‘s a long book at 699 pages, but I read it quickly because I found it entertaining. Also, this novel is the first in a series, but I think I read that only one character continues on to the next book.

Bklover I really like his books! They are great escapes! I enjoyed 4mo

A group of small town women meet weekly to eat good food, confess their sins, and support each other. This was a good, heartwarming story. The dialogue felt real, such as how the ladies often interrupted each other during their confessions. The only downside was that I found one of the main story lines to be a little unbelievable. Even so, I enjoyed this book and would definitely read more by this author.

JamieArc I attended a writer‘s workshop hosted by this author. She is a lovely human being. I enjoy her books. 11mo

I sometimes hesitate to read a book with all sorts of rave reviews. I think it makes me expect too much. But this story kept me on the edge of my seat for three days. It would‘ve been one day, but life got in the way (you know, eating and sleeping). As for the ending, you may guess part of it, but you won‘t guess all. A good story that reminded me a little of Hatter Fox. A few similarities there.

Descent: A Novel | Tim Johnston

A family takes one last vacation before the oldest child heads off to college. Problem is, oldest child disappears on said vacation. This suspenseful read focuses on how each family member copes with grief and while the overall tone of the book was depressing, in the end I was moved by this story. If you like a more character-driven thriller, this book is for you!

SheReadsAndWrites I want to read his books SO BAD! (I love his books on writing) But I'm terrified that I'll be terrified. 😬😂 2y
cinda.marie @SheReadsAndWrites 😂 Your comment reminded me of Joey (on Friends) putting The Shining in the freezer bc it terrified him! Maybe start with 11/22/63 or The Stand. They aren‘t quite as scary as most of his others. A shorter one that is not scary is Elevation. 2y
SheReadsAndWrites I love that episode! 😂 Okay. I'll start with 11/22/63. I heard The Dome is good too but really long. 2y

I was going through some old books, deciding which ones I wanted to trade in for credit. Knowing this one was a keeper, I put it back on my shelf, but something fell out. It was an old postcard my mom had sent me while on a business trip to Iowa. I guess I tucked it away and forgot about it. So glad I didn‘t trade it!

I don‘t know if I‘m completely sold on the existence of ghosts, but who really knows? I do enjoy reading about them - that‘s for sure! I was very intrigued by Leslie Rule‘s well-researched stories and I never had the sense that anything was being exaggerated. The photos were an added bonus.

Of the four novellas in this book, I chose to read “The Library Policeman” first because the title appealed to me. It was good in the beginning, even humorous at times. But it soon took a dark turn. Too dark for me. If I were to rate the book on this story alone, it might be a thumbs down. But I‘ll keep reading. After all, it‘s Stephen King. It has to be good. 📚

TheNeverendingTBR One I've still to read of Kings, hope you enjoy it! 2y
