I watched the show as it had been advertised while we were watching Long Way Home, and I hadn‘t realised it was based on a book.
I found the first book on audible plus (only available until the 5th August, so go now!). While very similar, the show added some extra scenes for dramatic effect.

I enjoyed the sci-fi elements, found the MC (Murderbot) relatable and likeable!, and the audio was great. Will definitely look for more in this series!

This is such a surprisingly sweet story told by Murderbot, a Security Unit who hacked his own system so he could no longer be a killer. He just wants to be left alone to watch his soap operas until shit hits the fan on a distant, unmapped planet. How far will he go to protect his humans and not repeat past mistakes all while maintaining his cover?

I'm already eagerly waiting the next books from the library! 🤓

ImperfectCJ Interesting that you use masculine pronouns for Murderbot. My elder kid and I have an ongoing discussion about why some readers see Murderbot as "he" and some as "she" even though it has no gender (my kid and I think Murderbot feels more "she"). 3w

I think the crew in the book referred to Murderbot as "It", but my brain was picturing just a sexless being, as it described itself when fast-forwarding through the sex scenes in the serials. I think I typed "he" as a default which is unfortunate because that's definitely not accurate. 3w

ImperfectCJ @CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian I do recall Murderbot being quite clear about the "it" thing. My elder kid and I view it as almost a kind of Rorschach test, seeing which pronoun human readers default to. 3w

ImperfectCJ @CoffeeK8 That's part of why I'm not interested in watching the show (not happy with the casting). While I prefer to read this series in print, I actually don't mind Kevin Free as narrator for the audiobooks. His narrating voice reads more on the androgynous side to me, at least in this series. 3w

ImperfectCJ @Rachel.Rencher I think it's really interesting what our brains default to with this. Murderbot seems so human to me (or at least so relatable), I have to make a conscious effort to use "it." 3w

Clare-Dragonfly My book club had a good discussion about Murderbot‘s pronouns too! I figured with the new show (which I am not caught up with, but have been enjoying), more people will be using “he,” since it appears decidedly masculine. (I‘m grumpy about the casting too.) 3w

so-so

While I enjoyed this story it didn‘t quite scratch the same itch that Mickey7 did. While a quick, short read overall the individual chapters were actually quite long (only 10 in the whole story). The main character - murderbot - didn‘t really show any emotions at all, which on one hand I get, but on the other it made it hard to care about the story overall. Will I continue the series? Most likely yes, at least the next one! 🌟🌟🌟💫

Any other Murderbot fans watching the new TV show? I was very dubious at first and wasn't sure if I was going to watch it, but I've been pleasantly suprised so far. It's not the books, but it's good. It really nails the humor which is key. I might have to do a Murderbot reread now.

julesG I'm holding out till all episodes of the season have aired. I've told everyone and their grandmother to keep spoilers (deviation from the books etc) at minimum. 2mo

julesG Also, a Murderbot re-read is always a good idea. I listen to the GraphicAudio versions in the car. Better than listening to the news or weird music, or very often commercials, since I usually only drive for ten minutes. 2mo

With the exception of Sunrise on the Reaping, the rest of these books have been sitting on my shelves for quite some time. 6 of the books are arcs, which have been published for years now, that I need to read so that I can leave them in LFL‘s and open up space for more books on my shelves. Riveted_Reader_Melissa I have read the series, and agree…and sadly some of that is our socialization about what mothers do, should do, and fathers should not. But although Murderbot is genderless, I often find myself thinking of her as a her. And in my brain applying female pronouns. Which is not really a good thing, it does not want that label, they like themselves the way they are….my imposing a mental “she” is probably a factor that I need to work on. And ⤵️ 3mo

ImperfectCJ Nurturing is (or should be) genderless. And I agree...Murderbot is one heck of a nurturer. I love being a mother and celebrating motherhood, but I wonder what things would be like if we had a day to celebrate nurturing regardless of gender? 3mo

I've talked with my elder (nonbinary, adult) kid about this, and we hypothesized that maybe it depends on which aspects of Murderbot a reader relates to, and that perhaps the genderlessness of Murderbot makes it so the reader attributes their own gender to Murderbot. I think it's something to be curious about rather than feel bad about. 3mo

I don‘t really think of Murderbot as anything but an it? Maybe slightly male or masculine based on its presentation of itself? As a speaker of German my mind often goes to the masculine pronoun when talking about Murderbot. The German word for "robot" is masculine, and that -sadly- also translates into English. I try to catch it, but it sometimes slips out. My children love to make fun of me for saying "he", but they know I know. 3mo

julesG Also, yes, it's sad that we associate nurturing mainly with the feminine. This needs to change, but it's a battle that won't change in my lifetime. 3mo

julesG @BookmarkTavern I haven't read Murderbot in German. My son did and assures me the German "es" is used - gender neutral singular pronoun, like "it". But that darn word "Roboter" (robot) is masculine and keeps scrambling my brain. 3mo

✨Martha Wells fans I need opinions!✨

All Systems Red had one of the most relatable main characters that I‘ve ever read. His desire to procrastinate speaks to my soul. But that‘s where my excitement fell. It wasn‘t bad by any means but the world-building felt a little lacking and I didn‘t have any connection at all to the side characters. But that darn cliffhanger makes me want to continue on, so give me the pros and cons in the comments.

ChaoticMissAdventures I guess I took this on more of a character study on MB themself, but the world does expand on further reading. They are super short, I wish she would have combined a couple of them (way too expensive to buy all of them IMO) I have read 5 of them some a couple of times and I just love MB but that might not be enough for others. 4mo

Doppoetry I'm caught up on these novels and some of them are kind of fun, but most of them are “meh.

They are definitely character-driven, but you can hardly tell any of these characters apart because they're all stereotypes and have nothing to them aside from a few minor personality traits. In short, they all fall flat, aside from Murderbot, but even Murderbot's charm kind of wears off later.

Pros: Short, accessible
Cons: flat characters, repetitive 4mo

xicanti I loved this first book, then liked each subsequent novella a bit less, until I abandoned the series. Murderbot is cool, but that wasn‘t enough to sustain me through what I found to be fairly flat stories. 4mo

TieDyeDude I'm in it for Murderbot :) I am in the middle of a reread of the first four, then I'll be reading the rest for the first time. I think the human side characters are meant to be flat; I always read it as a spoof on sci-fi. Murderbot represents the audience watching a movie, yelling at the screen at all the stupid things humans do, but then having to fix it. The world and Murderbot's past are explored more, but it is character driven series. 4mo

Ruthiella I don‘t find the other characters flat, personally. And you‘ve not yet met ART. But, maybe it‘s just not your cup of tea. 🤔😊 4mo

julesG I'm with @TieDyeDude and @Ruthiella. The Murderbot Diaries are more character driven stories. I think the "little" world-building is a feature not a bug, because we're in MB's head. We experience the world through its eyes and it just doesn't care about its surroundings that much. Maybe read the second one too. It has the most sarcastic character ever. It also has some of MB's backstory. I suppose you can guess I love this series. 4mo

BookmarkTavern The audiobooks sold it for me! Kevin Free‘s utter exasperation but underlying fondness for the silly humans under Murderbot‘s care is utterly delightful. 4mo

Work has been slow this week, so I started my re-read of Murderbot Diaries on audio this time. The narrator is solid, but I think I got more enjoyment reading the physical books. I'll finish Artificial Condition, but then I think I'll switch back to paper. Built this Hubble telescope Metal Earth model while listening to the audio this evening.

Finished earlier this week. I had been hearing about this series for ages no & decided to finally give it a go as a quick listen. It was enjoyable although not as laugh out loud funny as I‘d been led to believe, I liked Murderbot & I‘ll read/listen to more. The first book was free through Audible & I put the next audiobook on hold through Library Libby (19 weeks wait! Probably due to the upcoming Apple TV series.)

After hearing about this series for years from friends, I‘m so glad to have finally read this first book! I liked the story, the novella format, and the characters that felt so quickly filled out.
Murderbot is funny & relatable, and I will definitely be reading more in this series.

Well, that was fun. I loved book 1, have book 2 on hold, and am happy there are 6 more in the series to look forward to.

Not overwhelmingly technical and a completely relatable AI protagonist. Witty and thoughtful. The novella format keeps the narrative engaging.

Worth a try even if you don‘t think Sci-fi is your thing.

I'm giving this a go although I didn't see any of the others on the shelf. I don't really understand how this library branch groups their fantasy and scifi. Anyway, I've had a headache since Friday night, tomorrow is an incredibly welcome public holiday, my babies are going on a long holiday with their dad and on my bed under the fan is where I will be until further notice.

DogMomIrene If your library has the audiobook versions of the sequels, and you want to keep reading about Murderbot, I highly recommend the audiobooks. They‘re well done. Immersive listening. 8mo

Who doesn‘t love a story about a murderous robot with a conscious?

Murderbot is a SecUnit sent on intergalactic space missions with the humans who hire the spacecrafts. But unlike the other units, which must obey every command, Murderbot can think for itself. It just chooses to help so it will remain undetected.

In this shortish novel, the first in the series, we‘re introduced to Murderbot and it‘s thinking.

Great story, entertaining scifi.

1. I read almost all of the Murderbot books in August, but I've tagged the first because it ignited the spark for me!

2. All of them! Paper because of the tactile experience, ebooks because I can read in the dark and pack "light" while still taking a shelfload of books, audiobooks because I can read while doing housework.

3. Probably mystery/thriller/horror these days.
