The Summer Queen
The Summer Queen: A Novel of Eleanor of Aquitaine | Elizabeth Chadwick
New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Chadwick brings Eleanor of Aquitaine to life with breathtaking historical detail in the first volume of this stunning new trilogy. Eleanor of Aquitaine, the legendary 12th century queen of France and later of England, is one of the most powerful and irrepressible women in medieval history, and her story of romance, scandal and political intrigue has fascinated readers for centuries. Young Eleanor (or Alienor as she was known) has everything to look forward to as the heiress to the wealthy Aquitaine. But when her beloved father William X suddenly dies, childhood is over. Sent to Paris and forced to marry Prince Louis VII of France, she barely adjusts before another death catapults them to King and Queen. At the age of just 13, Eleanor must leave everything behind and learn to navigate the complex and vivacious French court. Faced with great scandals, trials, fraught relationships, and forbidden love at every turn, Eleanor finally sees what her future could hold if she could just seize the moment. The first in this highly anticipated trilogy, The Summer Queen follows Eleanor through the Second Crusade to the end of her marriage to Louis VII. The author's meticulous research (including delving into the Akashic records) portrays the Middle Ages and Eleanor with depth and vivid imagery unparalleled in historical fiction that will keep readers riveted and wanting more.

Elinor of Aquitaine is one of my favourite #queens from history. She‘s a vibrant and impactful character who sometimes feels much more modern than her years. She‘s appeared in some absolutely great fiction - I could have picked some of Sharon Kay penmanship work here as wells but I went with this one - one of several of this authors books that focus heavily on Elinor #maymontage

I have always been curious about Elanor of Aquitaine, but this is the first time I‘ve properly read about her. I really enjoyed this! It took me a little while to get into, especially with some of the cringe sex-scene descriptions. But her life is fascinating and I‘m so excited to continue the series. Sadly I‘ve lent the next one to my mum, hopefully she‘ll give it back soon! Thanks @jenniferw88 for giving me this in the swap last year!

A really immersive historical fiction novel that follows Eleanor of Aquitaine from age 12 to 30. We see her marriage to Louis, future king of France, their travels to Jerusalem for the Crusade, their divorce, and finally Eleanor‘s marriage to Henry, future king of England. The descriptions are lovely and Eleanor is a fascinating character. This is the first in a trilogy and I‘m definitely looking forward to the next 2 books.

#FierceFeb #NoOnesLittleGirl My most recent read that this prompt reminds me of is the tagged book. I‘m only learning of Eleanor of Aquitaine, but to lose her mother so young , then her father. To be made a queen so young , dates uncertain , maybe only 13 yrs old. ( when she never really got to be a princess little girl. I‘m looking forward to reading on about her & her greatness & I wonder what happened to that little girl inside her ❤️

Cinfhen Great pick...❤️ 6y

I liked this a lot!

I don't often pick up historical fiction, but really enjoy it when I do. This is the story of Alienor of Aquitaine from age 13 to the day she steps on a boat to England. It's epic, romantic, atmospheric & just lovely to sink into, & the author's research blog is quite fascinating.

I had a couple of niggles (an extra breath between audio scene changes, please & enough with the lip-curls) but plan to start the next book asap

Using my current audiobookfor today's prompt (it's taking a while!) At the mo, Alienor is seeking an annulment (again) from King Louis. Soon she'll be saying #MyLastDay both to her role as Queen of France, and, if Louis gets his way, to life with her children.

I'm listening to this (very slowly) on audio, and I'm loving it!

My one quibble is, I think, with the editing. When the scene/pov changes within a chapter, it sounds like the narrator doesn't even take a breath. It's very disconcerting to find yourself in someone else's head, without the slightest pause for warning!

TrishB ❤️ Eleanor 6y
Texreader I love this author but I️ had probs with this series of hers. Maybe you‘ve hit the nail on the head. The editing wasn‘t quite up to par. And I hate it when they switch pov without telling us! 6y
rockpools @Texreader It's the first I've read of hers, and I am loving it, but this is one thing really jarring. I think it's just the audio editing I'm having issues with, but 🤷🏻‍♀️. Did you read it in print? And which of her books would you recommend more? 6y
rockpools @TrishB The advantage of being a complete ignoramus, is I don't know what happened next! I keep heading to Wikipedia for more info, and running away again - too many spoilers! But she was one smart, strong lady! 6y

The last of today's #bookmail. The Chadwick novels are totally the fault of @TrishB and the Infernal Devices boxed set is purely the fault of @Bookworm54 😘😘#blameitonLitsy

TrishB I totally apologise to your bank balance 😂😂 I brought the Mortal Instruments box set on kindle special offer a few weeks ago! Haven't got to them yet though.... 7y
DGRachel @TrishB Apology accepted. 😉😂 I should have given Litsy up for Lent. 😂😂 7y
TrishB I'm thinking that's maybe not long enough 😂 7y

Pickpick

Loved this historical novel. I didn't really know anything about Alienor of Aquitaine before reading this and now I can't get enough. I'll definitely be digging into the other two in the series and others by Elizabeth Chadwick. The author brought the characters and time period to life with her attention to detail and storytelling. If your looking to read about a #strongwoman , I recommend you pick this one up.

I couldn't bear the thought if leaving my child for over 2 years -especially one so young.
On a related note, not as far in #24in48 as I would have liked due to my own daughter being up the whole night sick. 😟😟 Seems to be better now, so tomorrow I'll make up the hours!

Bringing this to work today, can't wait to see what all the excitement is about for Chadwick!

TrishB These are fab 💗 7y
Born.A.Reader @TrishB I love historical fiction -particularly from the woman's POV so I was excited to find a new (to me) author who was highly recommended! 7y
TrishB Chadwick is great! I love Eleanor too so these were fantastic. Hope you enjoy it. 7y

A good book, chocolate tea latte and Lush bubble bar. My Saturday night reward after spending hours cleaning our old apartment for the final walk though next week. We moved to a new place a couple of weeks ago and have been slowing moving things over. Today was the final day and deep cleaning time. #booksandtea #prismafilter

Most of Elizabeth Chadwick's books have #dressesonthecover
They are brilliant historical fiction 😀
@RealLifeReading

Born.A.Reader I was dying to get started on the Summer/Autumn/Winter ones but my library doesn't have any of them! I was so distressed... 😣😣 7y
TrishB @Born.A.Reader 😬😬 hope they get them in soon - you:re in for a treat! 7y
mom2bugnbee I have recently discovered that I love historical fiction (thank you, Phillipa Gregory)... is there an order to these books? Should I read them in publication date order or does it not matter? 7y
TrishB @mom2bugnbee There are 2 sets you need to read in order The Greatest Knight and then The Scarlet Lion. Then The Summer Queen, Winter Crown and Autumn Throne are a threesome. I would also recommend anything by Sharon K Penman, who is amazing!!! There is an order to those, let me know if you're inteterested!! 7y
mom2bugnbee @TrishB Thx! I'll give her a shot! #blameLitsy 7y
