My May #bookspinbingo list. I primarily jumped down to books 401-420 on my Goodreads TBR, but adjusted a bit because 1.) it was originally too nonfiction heavy and 2.) I‘ll be traveling to a work conference the first week in May and don‘t anticipate being able to read much while I‘m there. I added in #authoramonth, #foodandlit, and my IRL book club picks to help with all of this (I usually just use my free spaces for those)

BkClubCare This an interesting list! 2y

I made my pile mostly based on challenges I‘m trying to finish up before the end of the year. My goal is to read 5. I put in options on hand that have:
an “&” in the title
a title with the word “magic,” “of,” or “crown”
a title with 4 letters or less
titles that start with F, J, or U
my book club pick

I forgot to include my current read, Noir, in the picture, so let‘s say it‘s 21.

Her anecdotes are great and really true to rural Saskatchewan. The similarities between our childhoods make it even more sad to hear of the racism she experienced. Although I mentioned racism, that is not the focus of the book. It is about family and growing up, and has lots of humour. But the book has a bit of a jumpy, disjointed feeling as the chapters don't follow a particular order.

I learned about this book from @lindy and really enjoyed it, autobiographical fiction of life "on the rez." The author grew up on the Okanese First Nation, and many of these stories are about her school years in Saskatchewan. The details, the humor, the clear child's naive voice are all so strong and lend themselves to a great read. And perfect for #indigenouspeoplesday

Lindy I'm so glad that you enjoyed this. 😊Dumont has a new book out that I haven't yet read: 7y

Getting ready to head off for camping trip 2 of 2 this week! This pic was from earlier this week when I took my oldest niece camping on the Southern Oregon Coast for a few days. It was lovely and we read a lot. I sincerely doubt I'll get much reading in on this trip as we're taking her two younger brother with us (and my brother and 5 yo niece are meeting up with us too). 😆 One last adventure before their school starts next week. ✌🏽

Loved this book! Dumont is a skilled writer and, like so many other Indigenous storytellers before her, she manages to tell an often sad and serious story in an engaging way that finds the humor in every situation. I couldn't put down this story of the Dumont family and, as always, enjoyed reading a story about someone else's rez-life that is both similar and different to my own.

I borrowed @RachelO 's idea and made it prettier. Bitty kitten helped. She thought the books were all layed out a little too straight and decided to mess them up a bit to give them a more casual charm- then posed so everyone could see the great artist with her work.

And now for #TBRBingo E-book Edition! My kobo "shelves" were getting a little out of control (damn you, kobo sales!) So I decided to do a separate bingo card just for digital books.

Happy Reading!

JazzFeathers Hey, l'm a Kobo user too! Everyone seems to use Kindle 7y
PirateJenny I use my iPad. That way I can have Kindle, Nook, and iBooks. No sense limiting yourself. Plus being in publishing there's that whole I'd rather buy from the publishers than Amazon 😊 7y
TheKidUpstairs @PirateJenny @JazzFeathers I got my first kobo pretty early. At the time Kindle would only allow books purchased from Amazon, where the kobo supports books from kobo, publishers, indie stores, libraries, etc. Don't know if Kindle is still limited these days? Also, at the time kobo was a Canadian company (not anymore, they sold a long time ago). And I get headaches reading on an iPad screen for too long, I like the e-ink ☺ 7y
PirateJenny @TheKidUpstairs there's a Kindle app for tablets, including the iPad. But yes the books still have to be in mobi format. I have a very specific reason for using an iPad though: I get any book my company publishes for free but only on an iPad, not any other tablet. And I work for Penguin Random House so that's a lot of free books. ☺ 7y

Please don't judge this book by its absolutely horrible cover. I almost did. I'm glad I read it because I ended up liking it way more than I expected to. Lindy @shawnmooney @LeahBergen Please don't tease me about how much I read, okay? One of the things I love about Litsy is that I don't feel freakish for reading so much, but I'm still sensitive about it. I value the connections I've made with both of you, so I'm being honest about this. 7y
Lindy @shawnmooney @LeahBergen I was one of the judges for the Alberta Readers Choice Award in 2012, and this was in my top five. I read so many good books this month, including some not pictured like THE MOTHERS by Brit Bennett, FIRE FIGHT by Jacqueline Guest, THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS by M.R. A hilarious, heartfelt collection of short stories about Dawn, a young Cree/Metis woman. Watch nerdy awkward Dawn as she does stuff like peeing her pants, being called "bannock belly," going to bingo with her mom, driving around with her underage cousins, trying to impress boys, and worming her way out of schoolyard fights. The book doesn't shy away from tough realities (alcoholism, poverty, racism) but the focus is always on humour and resilience

More tea, more rainy afternoon, more Dawn Dumont.

Dawn learning to drive: "To keep my fear at a minimum, Mom described the driving test in detail. 'Its the worst half hour of your life. They're gonna make you parallel park and you have to be twelve centimetres from the curb. If you're off by even one centimetre, it's all over.' "

"Tabitha (older sister) and I were further divided by our innate differences. If you put her in a room full of people, they would be drawn to her quiet confidence in a matter of minutes. If you put me in a group of people, I would find a book and ignore them, too ashamed of my incredible need to be liked to reach out."
Oh Dawn, I get you.

This is possibly the funniest book I've ever read. Cree / Metis author.
At bingo: "At first it was awkward sitting next to the same white people who glared at Native people when they walked into their stores, but after sharing a few nail-biting jackpots, racism faded into the background as they concentrated on the true enemy:
'Goddamn fuckin' bingo caller!'
'I only needed one number for a fucking hour'
'Last fucking time I play at this hall!' "
