I finished this book yesterday but didn‘t get around to posting. 🤦🏻‍♀️

My main gripe about this book is that there‘s nary a hot air balloon! There are tons of book covers with hot air balloons on them, so it was disappointing that Fog did not travel by balloon. But this was an entertaining read nonetheless!

#bookspinbingo

TheAromaofBooks I thought the same thing! I feel like literally 80% of the editions for this book have a hot air balloon on the cover, to the point that I thought the ENTIRE journey was going to be by balloon, and instead - none!? What the heck! 😂 10mo

February #Bookreport. I did not get a ton of stuff read this month. Too many chunksters on the list! Still working through most of them. Hopefully March will be more impressive. There were all good and I'd be hard pressed to pick a favorite. Probably Katalin Street or Drive My Car or The Last Will and Testament of Senhor da Silva Araujo.

@Cinfhen

Cinfhen Still an impressive month of reading!! And chunksters in progress!!!! 🙌🏻 March has 31 days😉it‘s a bonus month 😂 11mo
DrexEdit @Cinfhen I could really use the extra time! 😂 Too bad we're going to lose an hour when the clocks reset. Every second counts! 😊👍 11mo

I've been watching Around the World in 80 Days on PBS with David Tennant. It's excellent! But it is so far off from the source material! About the only thing the same is that there is a wager and some people are traveling around the world. haha! 🚝 🚢 🐘

So then I realized that my own understanding of the source material might be a bit off as I believe I've only ever read the Classics Illustrated version, eg. the comic book. ⬇

DrexEdit My Mom bought tons of Classics Illustrated & to this day I have comic book versions only of dozens of classics in my head. So I am now tackling the 80 Days source material on @SerialReader. I'm finding that the comic book was probably pretty close to the source. And that the PBS/Masterpiece version is even further off from the source than I had even imagined. It's interesting trying to reconcile all the different versions in my head! 📙 📘 📕 😜 12mo
DivineDiana I am recording this show, and am looking forward to watching it! 12mo

DNF @ 36%. Good writing and description, but super colonialist and predictable. That‘s my #bookspin read finally off my list after DECADES, so I‘m calling this a win regardless.

Penguin Clothbound Classics edition - beautiful product. Love this story. “ A true Englishman never jokes about anything as serious as a bet”. A timeless classic.

Sooo... there's no hot air balloons in this book. Why did I think this was a book about hot air balloons?
A very enjoyable adventure story, despite the lack of air travel...

This was a fun, quick read. The protagonist goes around the world on a dare, to win a bet.

Not sure why they put a balloon on the cover. There is no balloon.

Due to this book I am convinced we should read, read, read! Finished this wonderful book yesterday. It was one of those books I really wanted to finish but I didn‘t want it to end. The pace was slow however, as most classics are. I never watched the movie & don‘t plan to let it destroy the book for me either 😆. I realized many movies must‘ve been inspired by scenes from this book. #aroundtheworldin80days #julesverne #classics

Repost for @TheAromaofBooks :

Hey friends! Almost time for the February #BookSpin, so now is the time to put together your list!! Tagged book was my January pick, which I did finish, so we will see what happens in February. 😁 Post your list of 20 books between now and February 2, and I'll draw a number at random - everyone reads that number book from their lists. I am keeping track of who posts lists and who posts... (see her page for more info)

imyril Ha! I didn‘t realise it was a different list each month 😂 but as I skipped January‘s spin I‘ll use the same list since even if the same number comes up I still want to read that book 😊 3y
rockpools I love this idea! Going to post a list now 😊 Also, what @imyril asked - a different list each month? (edited) 3y
TheAromaofBooks @imyril - Well I am technically using the same list except with a replacement for the one I read haha so you can post the same list, a different list, or the same books in a different order - whatever works for you!! 3y
TheAromaofBooks @Chrissyreadit @RachelO - looking forward to your lists!!! 3y
TheAromaofBooks @RachelO - sorry, missed your question at first. It's whatever you want - I am using January's list but replacing the book I read. You can do that every month, or fresh books, or the same books and change their order - literally however you want. I may end up reading some of the books on my list even if they aren't chosen, so it will change a bit every month. 3y
rockpools @TheAromaofBooks 👍 Perfect- thank you! 3y
llwheeler I'm almost finished my Jan book! I think I will keep my same list 🙂 3y
TheAromaofBooks @llwheeler - sounds good!! You may want to choose a replacement for slot 18 because there is always a chance that I'll draw the same number again!! 😁 3y
Melismatic I love this idea! I don‘t have 20 unread books on my shelf tho...i have around 15....any excuse to get more? 😂🤷🏻‍♀️ id love to follow along regardless! 3y
TheAromaofBooks @Melismatic - Would love to have you along!! You can either add five books to your list that you've been meaning to read but don't have on your shelf (maybe books you would check out of the library or something), or give five of your fifteen books double numbers - one of the books may be both 2 and 18, or something along those lines. Tag me when you post your list, and I'll tag you when I draw the number next Sunday!! 3y
Melismatic @TheAromaofBooks ooh ok! Works for me! I‘ll get my list together now 🥰 3y
llwheeler True, if 18 does get picked again I might use another of my tbr books by the same author, or else # 19 might do double duty for 18 and 19... 3y
TheDaysGoBy I love this idea! Though I do kind of have February spoken for as a friend and are doing a buddy read before we meet up in person in March. So hopefully I can catch you then! Really fun idea! 3y
olivia.ferz Yaas!!! I'll be doing this too. I may not finish it but at least I'll be giving it a try! 3y

jb72 That‘s a great idea. I set myself up a similar challenge. I may join you with my kryptonite books. 3y
TheAromaofBooks @jb72 - That would be great!! I use this one to do books that I've recently acquired but haven't read yet. For my everyday reading, I do another random number generator of all the books I want to read but am checking out of the library. Anyway, you can make this list of books fit any category you like!! 3y
TheAromaofBooks @mabell - sounds good!! And it's no pressure, so no worries if you don't get to January's book!! 😁 3y
TheAromaofBooks @thedaysgoby - I added you to the list!! Thanks for your interest! And have fun with your February buddy read!! 😊 3y
maleahrae Can you add me to the list? 3y
TheAromaofBooks @maleahrae - absolutely!! If you want to join this month, just a post a list/picture of a stack of your twenty books and tag me - and then I'll tag you when I draw the number next Sunday. If this month doesn't work for you, I'll let you know when we are getting ready for the March spin!! 3y

TheAromaofBooks @Crazeedi - still plenty of time - I won't draw until Sunday (Feb 2). The list can be literally whatever you want! Last month I did a list of books I have been putting off; this month I am doing mostly books on my “recent arrivals“ shelf (some of which have been there a couple years, whoops!). Some people are doing audio books, Kindle books, ARCs, or just random books they have around - however you want to compile your list totally works!! 3y
TheAromaofBooks @Crazeedi - I even have a few people who didn't have a full 20, so just doubled numbers on some of their titles. As you can see, this is a pretty lawless challenge! 😆 3y
robinb @TheAromaofBooks thanks!! 👍😊 3y
Crazeedi @TheAromaofBooks not to worry I have TONS of unread on my shelf, kindle and ARCs. I'm even thinking I'd have 20 partly finished books I could make a list with one of these months! Great to know the skys the limit! Whoohoo! Thanks so much!😘😍❤ 3y

I was surprised at how entertaining and readable this classic ended up being. Verne's heroes are always strong, silent, scientific men, and Fogg is no exception. We never really find out why he takes on his bet, but he calmly deals with every delay that appears. My favorite part is when his servant rescues the girl, but the girl views Fogg as the hero and falls in love! 😆 Published in 1872, so there is definitely a sense of inherent white ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) supremacy as they pass through areas like India and Japan, but this was the height of colonialism, so in a weird way it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be?? All in all, Verne weaves a fun and entertaining tale that I definitely recommend.

One book down for #24B4Monday!! Haven't been tracking my hours this time around, but hoping to finish two more books by the end of the weekend. @Andrew65 @TheReadingMermaid @jb72

A few days ago I introduced my personal challenge for the year - a monthly #BookSpin ! The concept is simple - make a list of 20 books languishing on your TBR. On the 2nd of every month, I draw a number, & you read that book sometime during the month!

January's number - 18!! I get to read the tagged book! Be sure to tag me with the book you get to read, and let me know when you read it!
@imyril @llwheeler @Lcsmcat @Butterfinger @mabell

TheAromaofBooks And just a reminder - sometimes books linger on the TBR because, deep down, we don't really want to read them. Please don't feel like you have to force yourself to read the book you drew. The challenge is to give the book a chance! If your review of the book is to say you bailed on it for any reason, that is A-OK. No pressure here. A DNF still means the book is off your list, and that's the goal. Happy reading!! ❤ (edited) 3y
ljuliel Good idea, and good luck 👍🏼🍀 3y

*Probably an obvious choice here, but I haven‘t seen it used yet. Jules Verne is at top left; his illustrator, Hippolyte Léon Benett is pictured just right of Verne. All of the images pictured are Benett‘s; he was the most prolific illustrator of Verne‘s books. If you‘ve read it, you‘ll recognize the scenes. If you haven‘t, maybe you saw the movie? Anyway—Great book & especially great for kids. ♥️

Oh gosh, I've been through the adult section in the op shop, twice, then earlier this week I discovered the biography section....
I've gone back in today to just grab one book I saw earlier for a friend and now I've been stuck for hours in the teen/young adult section.
Only 2 small piles later......you know, for the kids...

Around the World in 80 Days is the lovely old cream colored book with the green tree on the spine.

I hate to admit that I had never read any Verne until this novel. What a delight! It‘s funny, informative, features some fascinating characters and a sort of chase. I was on the edge of my seat! A product of its time (1873), it also features some racist/colonialist views but still an entertaining story. https://cannonballread.com/2019/07/around-the-world-in-eighty-days-elcicco/

BarbaraBB Excellent review! I just read this one too and was equally surprised about how much I liked it! 4y

I really really liked this one. And I didn‘t for a moment expect to since I was so annoyed by The Centre of the Earth!
But this is a book about a nerdy control freak (so like myself 😉) who has a tight schedule to travel the world in 80 days. It‘s about countries and travelling in the old days and it‘s a bit of an adventure. I hope it fits the #middlegrade prompt for #Booked2019 since everyone I know read it at that age! #1001books

Cinfhen Works for me!! Glad u like it 🤓 4y

I'm 100 pages in to Jules Verne's classic and STILL have the theme from the 80s cartoon playing in my head 😆 #earworm

In the year 1872, the house No. 7 Saville Row, Burlington Gardens-the house in which Sheridan died, in 1814-was inhabited by Phileas Fogg, Esq., one of the most singular and most noticed members of the Reform Club of London, although he seemed to take care to do nothing which might attract attention.
