Monster, She Wrote
Monster, She Wrote: The Women Who Pioneered Horror and Speculative Fiction | Lisa Kroger, Melanie R. Anderson
Weird fiction wouldn't exist without the women who created it. Meet the female authors who defied convention to craft some of literature's strangest tales. And find out why their own stories are equally intriguing. Everyone knows about Mary Shelley, creator of Frankenstein; but have you heard of Margaret Cavendish, who wrote a science-fiction epic 150 years earlier? Have you read the psychological hauntings of Violet Paget, who was openly involved in long-term romantic relationships with women in the Victorian era? Or the stories of Gertrude Barrows Bennett, whose writing influenced H.P. Lovecraft? Monster, She Wrote shares the stories of women past and present who invented horror, speculative, and weird fiction and made it great. You'll meet celebrated icons (Ann Radcliffe, V.C. Andrews), forgotten wordsmiths (Eli Coltor, Ruby Jean Jensen), and today's vanguard (Helen Oyeyemi). And each profile includes a curated reading list so you can seek out the spine-chilling tales that interest you the most.

If you want a shallow dive into the history of women writing horror this is the exact book for you! It talks about the beginning of horror fiction and the women who pioneered it into the authors who write horror today. I enjoyed the reading list sections in each mini-biographies even though it just made my tbr longer. This book also has cute illustrations but I read the kindle version. I plan on buying a physical copy though cause they are cute!

1) I'm currently working through Monster She Wrote, though the last I read and finished was probably The Queer Principles of Kitt Webb
2) 👍 for both! I'm especially loving the illustrations in Monster She Wrote
3) oh, I'm genre trash and rarely leave my SciFi/Fantasy/Horror/Romance quadrangle - there's just so much inside of it!

This book is a fun rundown of women writers of the weird and scary and the ways that the horror genre can hide transgressive and radical ideas, giving women a voice about topics/issues they might not otherwise be able to talk about. I've read a good number of these, but still ended up adding more than 60 titles to my TBR. It can get a teensy bit tedious to read this straight through, but I enjoyed it in sections and with a notebook by my side.

This was my incredible gift from @ThePageantHam and I‘m in love with everything. (I know Jolabokaflod is traditionally celebrated with chocolate, but I‘m not a big chocoholic 🤷🏻‍♀️😄). Today was going to be cookie-baking day, but I discovered that I gave birth to the type of children who consider eggs a special Christmas breakfast and who don't feel their holiday is diminished by the absence of baked goods. So cookie-baking day has become reading day, a change I'm cool with. And a little later on I'll fix some no-bakes, which are my cookie of choice.

TrishB My kids always knew baked goods came from other peoples houses! 11mo
ImperfectCJ @TrishB Mine rely on Girl Scouts for most of their cookie needs. They still request pie from our home kitchen, though. 11mo

Today‘s #Podcast is ‘Monster, She Wrote‘ by Lisa Kröger and Melanie R. Anderson. They discuss women writing in the darker genre, this episode is about Charlotte Parkin Tillman‘s ‘The Yellow Wallpaper‘, a novella that I love and that I used in my dissertation on representations of female madness in art. #NFN2020 #Podcast

veritysalter @Milara Yes, I feel the book really portrays the feeling of claustrophobia and impotence that it must have been to have been a woman in the 1890s 13mo

I‘ve been plodding away at this since last weekend during runs and commutes. I‘m excited to try some of these lesser-known writers‘ work based on this book! I will say this title is probably more suited to being read than listened to....there were a few times I lost focus and track of whose work was being described and I was unable to search for and add books to my TBR list while driving and shuffling forward while trying to breathe!

2. Yes. I‘ll take animal narrators any day (except for Animal Farm - ugh 😑).

I don't know if its because of the nature of VT or just me feeling more of a “women power“ thing lately (also its one of the first times in my life that I have true women friends - where we lift each other up) .. Anyway I have felt more tied to being a woman, nature, the moon. Just everything.
