Priestdaddy
Priestdaddy: A Memoir | Patricia Lockwood
From Patricia Lockwooda writer acclaimed for her wildly original voicea vivid, heartbreakingly funny memoir about having a married Catholic priest for a father. Destined to be a classic. . .this years must-read memoir. Mary Karr, author of The Liars Club Father Greg Lockwood is unlike any Catholic priest you have ever meta man who lounges in boxer shorts, loves action movies, and whose constant jamming on the guitar reverberates like a whole band dying in a plane crash in 1972. His daughter is an irreverent poet who long ago left the Churchs country. When an unexpected crisis leads her and her husband to move back into her parents rectory, their two worlds collide. In Priestdaddy, Lockwood interweaves emblematic moments from her childhood and adolescencefrom an ill-fated family hunting trip and an abortion clinic sit-in where her father was arrested to her involvement in a cultlike Catholic youth groupwith scenes that chronicle the eight-month adventure she and her husband had in her parents household after a decade of living on their own. Lockwood details her sexual education of a seminarian who is also living at the rectory, tries to explain Catholicism to her husband, who is mystified by its bloodthirstiness and arcane laws, and encounters a mysterious substance on a hotel bed with her mother. In her beautifully written prose debut, Lockwood effortlessly pivots from the raunchy to the sublime, from the comic to the deeply serious, describing how she found her voice as a writer, reflecting on the Churchs recent history of scandal and abuse, and exploring issues of belief, belonging, and personhood.

I am finally reading this book and it is not a disappointment! Lockwood's writing is saturated with weird and funny. (Personally I think cats are monarchists 👑)

Ruthiella I laughed a lot while reading. At first I was annoyed by the author but once I got into the rhythm and the tone I really appreciated it.😀 2mo

There‘s a reason this made many “Best Of” lists. I‘d hate for people to miss out on her beautiful language because they may be put off by the title or that there is religion in it (I let this languish on my TBR for almost 2 years for these reasons). Language lovers, writers and other misfits who can‘t be labeled will particularly enjoy this.

Tricia‘s husband asks why would anyone want to be a priest. Her succinct response is so poignant to me. It seems she‘s had a lifetime of people questioning her own choice to be a poet. At some point she reconciled that we all are meant to do different things - and we don‘t have to judge others for what they‘re doing: Poet, Priest, Dog Walker, Baker, Cat Herder - just do what your heart wants to do (and forget the naysayers) - happiness follows.

sixgun When does peer approval mean more than our own happiness? I understand our peers keep us all in check. But who do we remember in life? Those that dared to live their life on the outside of that box. I just have to remind myself how kindly we remember Ghandi, and how shocked we are in regards to Dahmer. 🙄 9mo

LauraBeth @Cinfhen I‘d try it in print. This book is shaping up to be nothing what I had thought it was going to be - which is why I‘ve held off reading it. She has a wonderful way of being able to describe everyday things in ways I‘ve thought of before but have never been able to articulate. Also - she is so non-judgmental, which is refreshing in a memoir. She loves her family ❤️ (edited) 9mo

I fell in love w Patricia Lockwood‘s brain through these pages. It is strange to be weeping over a chapter in which the author and her mother are contemplating calling the cops due to a potential cumstain on their hotel sheets, but the way she renders it, it is laugh outloud funny and also: so tender. The book is named for her “daddy” but I found her humor/intellect and her relationship with her mother to be the most moving and electric parts.

The first chapters and the end chapters are pretty serious but the middle chapters are delightfully funny. Lockwood, a poet, plays with language like a kitten plays with a ball of string. Her mother is hilarious while I found her father, the titular “priestdaddy,” incredibly frustrating and contradictory. But I suppose that‘s part of his charm.

@Mommamanzi Thanks for the #giveaway! After reading “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up,” my husband somehow managed to convince me to cull my books, relying solely upon the power of his words. He‘s clearly a dark wizard. These men, eh? 🙄

Anyway! My favorite book so far this year is Patricia Lockwood‘s memoir, “Priestdaddy” - followed closely by “Once Upon a River” (recommended by the lovely @MeganAnn ).

Good luck with the purge! 😭

Love, love, love. Funny, witty, and weird, this memoir off the author's life growing up with a Catholic priest for a father and moving back in with her parents as a married adult pushed all of my buttons. Lockwood's poetic voice shines in this book.

Leniverse How do you have a Catholic priest as your dad? I know married priests who have converted to Catholicism and been allowed priesthood, but they have been childless. 1y
Titania @Leniverse Her father became a Catholic priest after kids. Not common, but it happens! And leads to quite an interesting childhood... 1y

I had been expecting this book to be funny, and certainly it was—I laughed out loud a number of times. Yet Lockwood moves through tones as the book progresses, irreverent to wistful to tender to contemplative to wry, and it all fits. I think this book manages to be quite a skillful blend of the sublime and the ridiculous.

Lockwood's foundations as a poet are evident in this memoir filled with unique and beautiful images. "Priestdaddy" often reads more like essays than a memoir because the author weaves glimpses of her early/current life with musings on more abstract concepts, especially religion. I like the parts about her parents best. Often laugh-out-loud funny. I listened on audio, which Lockwood humorously narrates.

This was laugh out loud funny. But it was more short humorous episodes than a cohesive story. I also felt the reader was kept at a distance from all of the characters, especially the titular father. Lockwood hinted at dark subjects but never explored them. It just didn‘t come together for me.
