#RedRoseSeptember Day 30: Michael Ende, beloved author of #NeverEndingStory, has a museum at the International Youth Library in Munich which I‘ve had the privilege of visiting quite a few times while serving as an International Research Fellow in 2016 and 2017. Here is the link to my post detailing my first visit to my book castle which is reputed to be the largest international children‘s library in the whole world: https://wp.me/pDlzr-aak

So close, I have been working on reading every book from one author a couple of times but I always get sidetracked by other books. I'm easily distracted by shiny new books 😁
Movie adaptation I liked better than the book, Neverending story, could barely finish reading it not sure why I was so bored with the book.

If you‘ve only seen the movie then you know the 1st 2/5ths (I did the math) of the book pretty well. While the film ends once Bastian enters the magical world of Fantasia*, the book follows his journey as he is twisted by his wish-fulfilling powers that steal his memories of Earth into a monstrous demagogue. His journey back to himself is a slow one, but rewarding all the same.

I recommend this classic to all fantasy fans.

Print > audio.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk *Fantasia in the movie, Fantastica in the book. 6mo

So Atreyu is headed back to the Ivory Tower to tell the Childlike Empress of his failure which means we are about to hit the big divergence point between book and movie.

I always thought of this as a halfway point when reading but I‘m actually 5 hrs down with 8 to go on audio.

I remember liking the darker, stranger 2nd part of the book but it seems to get no love in Litsy reviews and it‘s been years. We‘ll see if it holds up for me.

Addison_Reads I just read this for the first time recently and I loved the second half. 💚 7mo

So I made it through the Swamps of Sadness on audio. Poor Artax was not so lucky.

The scene in the movie is so brutal (aided by the fact that the kid playing Atreyu acts the hell out of it) but in the book Artax is a TALKING horse which adds a whole ‘nother layer of agony to it.

This movie was one of my favorites as a kid, and I still enjoy it as an adult. As a child I never read the book, but I'm glad I finally did. 😍

There is so much Ende writes into the journey across Fantastica that dosent occur in the film. I felt like a child again while reading this. I was caught up in this magical dream world and I never wanted it to end. 💜💚 Falkor is still my favorite.💙💛

If I‘m honest, this could be about 100 pages shorter without losing much. It‘s obvious why the filmmakers only used the first half. What a magical story! I was very familiar with the movie as a child, but found this so much more enjoyable. Half of the book is a story of Bastian rebuilding Fantastica which was a great adventure to go on. Well written, and very atmospheric I felt as if I were sucked into the world of Fantastica. Highly reccomend this book.

I don‘t know about this one. I grew up watching the 80s film during Christmas holidays. They used the first part of the book for the film and I had fun reading it. But then it got…maybe not boring, but definitely less engaging. With every chapter it felt more like Michael Ende wanted a way to poor as many fantastical creatures and adventures in just one story. It took me forever to finish it and left me quite dissatisfied.

Maewyn I seem to remember that the version we had as children had red print when about Bastian and black the rest of the time. Was it that way in yours? 10mo

I'm curious, how do other Littens feel about book series? It's getting increasingly hard to find stand alone novels, especially in genre fiction. I understand it from an author's and publisher's point of view, the profitability of multiple books as opposed to a one shot hit, but does anyone else get tired of waiting 3, 5, 10 or more years to see how the story shakes out? GoT has been going on for 23 years now, with the conclusion 👇👇

DGRachel I would love to see more standalone novels. I already have more series in progress than I can keep up with! 10mo
RamsFan1963 ...still years away. Don't get me wrong, I've read many series, from trilogies to long 10-12 book series, and some of my favorite books have been parts of series, but sometimes I just want a one and done story. Am I alone in this? 10mo
readingjedi I love series! Some of my best beloved reads are series. But I will not - could not - start a series that was incomplete. I will willingly wait till it's finished to start because the waiting for 'the next one' would undo me. Even if that's years like with H Potter. 10mo
See All 16 Comments
tournevis Novels are longer, and series are longer, and that's what the book business wants, because readers they think what more for their money and it garanties some repeat business. If you like the first book, you'll for seconds. On the other hand, the resurgence of the short story and the novella seems to have replaced shorter novels and stand-alones in genre publication business, because of ebooks. 10mo
Kaye I‘m not a big series fan myself. I‘ve read a few on occasion but I‘d much rather read a stand-alone. I guess the good thing about series is you get to revisit the same characters again. 10mo
Samplergal I‘m not a series girl. I‘d rather read a good novel or a good non-fiction. And, usually series aren‘t the genres I prefer. 10mo
LibrarianRyan I like a series. And I like a bit of time between. But just a bit. I‘m okay with a year between books. But at the same time I love a good stand alone. Something that says this is the story and it‘s complete. I will admit to loving a serialized novel where parts of while book are release on a set schedule. Like Remade. It feels like a series but not the super long wait. 10mo
TheReadingMermaid Series are just okay for me. But I find them difficult because I find some books are better than others in the series while other books just plain drag. I find myself reading books in a series maybe once or twice a year but I think I put the cap on that for other books. 10mo
rwmg I have a love-hate relationship with series. I love spending a long time in an established series but if I have to wait for the next one I tend to forget what's happened and need a recap. Also, the books tend to blur together in my mind so I find it difficult to review later installments when I'm on a binge because I've already said what I want to say in earlier reviews, 10mo
TheSpineView I like series when they are 2, 3 or 4 books. If it gets longer I tend to get bored. For example I quit reading the Outlander series 1/2 way into book 5. I think I made it through 5 books of GofT. It just gets old for me. 10mo
Karkar I like both. But it does feel like there are a lot more series going on right now. 10mo
RamsFan1963 @TheSpineView I'm with you on that, 3 or 4 maybe even 5 should be enough for the author to tell his/her story. I'm not a writer so I don't know, but it feels like padding when it goes on and on, book after book, and the plot has barely moved. That's why I gave up on The Wheel of Time books. 10mo
CouronneDhiver I‘ve never ever finished a book series but I don‘t mind trying out a new one from time to time... Generally, I prefer standalones 10mo
Slajaunie I can go either way on a series. I just don‘t want 20 books in the series. 2 or 3 is fine. 10mo
TheSpineView @RamsFan1963 Yes! I read only the first five books and never had the desire to finish. 10mo
TheSpineView @Slajaunie I am in total agreement. 3 is like the perfect number for a series. 10mo

I was really excited to read this, as I loved the movie as a kid. The first half of the book, on which the movie was based, was great! Then the second half was a pretty big disappointment. I don‘t know if I ever saw the second movie, so I‘m not sure if it followed Bastian‘s time in Fantastica. But I can see why they ended the original movie where they did. It made for a much better story. 2nd half is a snoozefest.

TheBogwitch :::blink blink::: There was a second movie? I loved the book, but I read it when it first came out. It‘s just different, reading after it‘s kind of culturally embedded. Does your copy have red and green print? 11mo
Soubhiville @TheBogwitch my copy is just a standard paperback, black print. I didn‘t realize it was written in German and later translated to English. That‘s pretty cool. 11mo
TheBogwitch It does make it cooler. The red and green print would be hard on these older eyes, but it was fine back in the day. 11mo

I‘m turning in for the night. I‘ve done pretty well for the #24b42019, but tomorrow I‘m back to work and have a NYE party to go to, so I‘m not expecting to quite get to 24 hrs. We shall see! I‘ve got 60 pages left in the tagged book and an hour and 15 minutes left in Lilac Girls. I‘d love to finish them both up tomorrow!

TheReadingMermaid Awesome progress! 👍🏻 11mo

This passage from The Neverending Story describes my (and probably your) book passion better than anything I‘ve ever read!

I bet you can‘t read it without your heart starting to flutter and a feeling of longing starting to fill you.

I‘m a little over 14 hours in to #24b42019 readathon, and it‘s going great! This book was a great choice for possibly my last of the year. 💕🍀🐉

TheReadingMermaid I love this book so much. And the movie! 💕💕💕 You're doing great sweetheart 👍🏻 11mo

One thing I look forward to on the one vacation I take a year is the book I choose to read over that vacation. This year I chose one of my all time favorite childhood stories The Never Ending Story. This will be my first time reading the book. My amazing wife @GypsyKat got me this beautiful edition for my birthday last year. Enjoying it so much already!

So I just got mad at my husband for calling him Puff the Magic Dragon and started crying.😂😂😂 BTW I just learned I have to teach him all about Falkor and The Neverending Story good thing I have the Blu-Ray and the Audiobook lol 😍😍😍😍.

LibrarianRyan My guy would probably have called him old yeller. So at least he was in a closer realm than mine. 11mo
Endowarrior21 @LibrarianRyan true but I am still teaching him lol 😂 11mo
LibrarianRyan @Endowarrior21 oh yes you should. I do it to josh. And he knows when I‘m having an off day because I have to do the magic dance with Bowie and Toby. 11mo

Also den ersten Teil.
13mo
