Stranger Diaries | Elly Griffiths
"Utterly bewitching. This atmospheric, intricate thriller, a pitch-perfect modern Gothic, chilled my blood and warmed my heart. As unforgettable as it is original." --A.J. Finn "Goose-bump spooky, smart, and haunting, in every sense. I loved this book! And you will too." --Louise Penny Death lies between the lines when the events of a dark story start coming true in this haunting modern gothic mystery, perfect for fans of Magpie Murders and The Lake House. Clare Cassidy is no stranger to murder. A high school English teacher specializing in the Gothic writer R. M. Holland, she teaches a course on it every year. But when one of Clare's colleagues and closest friends is found dead, with a line from R. M. Holland's most famous story, "The Stranger," left by her body, Clare is horrified to see her life collide with the storylines of her favorite literature. To make matters worse, the police suspect the killer is someone Clare knows. Unsure whom to trust, she turns to her closest confidant, her diary, the only outlet she has for her darkest suspicions and fears about the case. Then one day she notices something odd. Writing that isn't hers, left on the page of an old diary Hallo Clare. You don't know me. Clare becomes more certain than ever: "The Stranger" has come to terrifying life. But can the ending be rewritten in time?

Clare Cassidy finds herself at the center of a police inquiry when one of her colleague and friend is murdered.

I liked the story within the story, with the gothic short story The Stranger by fictional author R. M. Holland embedded in the murder plot. It's an entertaining book to read, even if the perpetrator is quite obvious, and some elements of the plot weren't that interesting (perhaps too much!?) like the witchcraft component to the story.

I loved this book!! It kept me guessing to the very end. I hope there‘s a third book coming because I‘m not done with Harbinder and the crazy cases she gets involved in 👍 Fun Fact: this is book 1 in the series, but I read book 2 first and nothing was spoiled. I love authors who can write a series but reading them in order isn‘t required 😍

I found this book quite pedestrian if I'm honest. Readable but uninspiring. It has a habit of jumping into the view of the pov character who has the least at stake in a scene. We observe Claire's pain rather than going through it with her. It also means the tension doesn't build in a satisfying way. The are some well written red herrings, but I found the ending ultimately uninteresting.

It‘s 3am, and I‘m listening to the tagged audiobook, and working on a paint by number. Hopefully I‘ll be able to fix my sleep schedule soon.😅

You'll be able to fix it soon - it will fix itself. You know that before last night, I didn't - couldn't - sleep for 42 hours? 😵😲

Week 3 of #Scarathlon has been going great for me for the most part! I‘ve finished 15 books (2 DNFs ☠️, and 2 five star reads 🔥), but I plan on making that 18 by the end of the day! 🖤

What a creepy story! I liked the three POVs and that they overlap, giving slightly different versions. The haunted house (school), the story within the story, and the copycat murders all added up to a page turning thrill. And the reveal! I did not see that coming! I see there is another book starring the Detective Sergeant from this book which I'm hoping to find at my library.

mcipher I loved this one! Book two wasn‘t quite as good for me but I‘m still hoping for more in the series 5mo

I started the book when it first came out but didn‘t finish because it didn‘t hook me in the first pages. (I didn‘t realize it was starting with a story within a story). But after reading the second book in the series I decided to try again and really enjoyed it. The narration on the audiobook was great. And I really like D.S. Kaur, the character who continues in this series. I am looking forward to the next one.

This was a pretty good murder mystery that paid homage to the greats of gothic literature, particularly Wilkie Collins. I was a little disappointed with the outcome as it seemed disingenuous, but the detective character was very well done. 3⭐️

First book in a new series by Elly Griffiths. Great gothic links & loved the way how was written from different perspectives, lead to getting to know the characters better. A great book for readers and people who like books. Also read and loved the second book in the series, The Postscript Murders. Look forward to continuing with this series as it is written. Calling all Murder Mystery/ Thrillers fans ! I am looking for some good recs to order for the high school. I have a LOT of high school senior guys who are reluctant readers, but really want Murder/ mystery/ thrillers to try to get back into reading. Any recs or favorites ? They don‘t have to be specifically YA, can be adult books as well. 🤗I‘m very new to this genre- I was blown away by tagged book, also loved The Girl on the Train.

Well-ReadNeck Reluctant readers often like series once they get hooked. The SJ Rozen Lydia Chin/Bill Smith series is fabulous The first one is 1y
Well-ReadNeck For psychological thrillers Dennis Lehane has some great ones My favorite is 1y
Well-ReadNeck Other mystery series that might be appealing to teens include a dash of sarcasm/humor with crime fighting. Like the Spellman Files series 1y

I enjoyed this! It's a stand-alone crime thriller (not part of one of Elly Griffiths' series), and has a nice spooky, gothic undercurrent behind the murder mystery. There are multiple narrators, giving differing opinions of events, and of each other, which works really well. Much of the action centres around a school and that, together with the focus on the characters' relationships, reminded me a bit of Joanne Harris' 'St. Oswald's' books ⭐⭐⭐⭐

"'I've just spoken to Daisy Lewis,' he said. 'She's devastated. They're childless, you know. All they had was each other.'
He said it in the way that parents often describe the child-free, pity matched with slight disapproval."

Well this really resonates! As someone who's in her forties, and in a long-term, loving relationship, I often find that society just can't get its head round the concept that I've chosen not to have children ?

A nicely gripping & well written thriller though it's not exactly ground-breaking. Told by 3 different characters, a format that can fall flat but worked well here. Suspense & sense of danger were low level but it was still compelling & had a certain creepiness/Gothic quality. Liked the dynamic between MC & female police officer, wanted more of their developing relationship. The perp was a bit too obvious but I still enjoyed the working out.

Not a bad whodunnit, but the twist is a little...trite? It was sprinkled with enough misdirection for me to get my hackles up over the overdone tropes typical of murder mysteries. I‘m not panning this book simply because it was not quite as far into the tropes as I‘d feared (but it is a close thing, because it‘s really damn trope-y).

Do you ever unhaul books you haven‘t read yet? My TBR stack keeps growing, as this picture is represents a small portion of the books I‘ve gotten within the last 30 days, & I keep considering the idea of going through older books that are still waiting to be read. It probably would do me good to unload some. But I harbor this fear that I‘ll regret getting rid of certain books & suddenly develop a strong desire to read the ones I parted with! 🤷‍♀️

Suet624 Yes, I can‘t seem to get rid of a book I haven‘t read yet and I keep buying new ones. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 2y

Soubhiville I do occasionally unhaul unread books. Sometimes my tastes change. And I often picked up very cheap used books, so I don‘t feel bad about parting with them if they no longer interest me. 2y
TheAromaofBooks Sometimes I'll just read the first chapter of a few that I'm on the fence about, and if it still sounds interesting, I keep it. If I'm not intrigued, I let it go. 2y

abookishbutterfly @TheAromaofBooks I like that idea. I might have to try it so I can clear up a little space! 2y

1. I just read the tagged book and was a perfect read for Nov. Dark & mysterious
2. Hubby was home for 3 weekdays! He travels now for work so he‘s not always around during the week.
