The Stranger Diaries | Elly Griffiths
Mehso-so

I read this one for #booked2023 #anypartofatrilogy. I had actually already read the middle book - The Postscript Murders- and I didn‘t find this one as enjoyable to read but it is written by an author who lives on my village about my local area so I did enjoy the familiarity of the surroundings.

Cinfhen I love reading books set in my area even if the book isn‘t great 😊 6mo

1 My Calamity Jane #AnyPartOfATrilogy

3 Last Night at the Telegraph Club #QuietYABook

4 I See You #BookDescribedWithTheWordsStretchTwistOrBalance

5 Station Eleven. #AboutAPandemic

Lakshmi is on verge of achieving her dream of owning her own home when the husband she fled years ago arrives with the sister she didn‘t know existed. Caring for her sister causes great changes to her life, the repercussions of which may undermine years of careful work. Lots of mixed reviews for this one but I really enjoyed it and felt for Lakshmi as she tried so hard to do the best she could for everyone.

I've been meaning to get to this, so #anypartofatrilogy #booked2023 was a perfect opportunity. Wonderful writing in which a writer travels to Greece + spends the novel simply listening to other people's life stories. These are tales of the frustration of family life and are woven like a spiders web, so that you are hypnotised by the tales as is the narrator. I definitely plan to read more of this series@Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @alisiakae

SamAnne Loved this one and want to read more Cusk. 13mo

I agree with some that this was more of a character study novel, and had less of a sense of the Australian Outback, but it‘s still my favourite Harper novel so far.

I loved meeting all of the characters, they were all so evenly drawn that I didn‘t guess the outcome until it actually happened; both the main storyline and the sub-plot.

Ruthiella Is this the first in a planned trilogy? Or is it is the last Aaron Faulk novel? 🤔 I think her books just keep getting better and better! I‘m very much looking forward to this one. 13mo
squirrelbrain It‘s supposedly the last Aaron Falk novel @Ruthiella - and the book does kind of imply that too (no spoilers!). 13mo
LeeRHarry Nice review. I think it‘s good that the setting for this book highlights the variety of landscapes here in Australia - most states have their wine countries and I was visualising Victoria‘s Yarra Valley whilst reading this having not been to that area in SA. (edited) 13mo
Librarybelle I really enjoyed this one! 13mo
Cinfhen This was a favorite for me too @BarbaraBB and you still get the sense of place. I feel like the book left on a cliffhanger setting up another Aaron Faulk story….I hope so 🙏🏻 13mo

This was going to be my pick for #Booked2023 #AnyPartofATrilogy because when I read Scythe years ago it was a true trilogy, but I went to request book 3 from the library last night I noticed that a book of short stories had been written about this world after book 3 which inexplicably seems to be labeled book 3.5. Do people think this still works for the prompt since it‘s not part of the novel arc, or should I pick something else?

Cinfhen I think it‘s fine but ultimately it‘s what you think😊It‘s really your challenge 😘 13mo
Soubhiville I think you could still use it. The short story collection is written by different authors, kind of a collection of fan Fic from the same world. 🤗 At least that‘s my understanding- I haven‘t read it yet. 13mo
IndoorDame @Soubhiville oh, if it‘s by multiple authors that makes me really disinclined to read it. And I was already somewhat on the fence. I probably will still use this then if it‘s closer to fanfic. Thanks! 13mo

"She had already been to hell. One prayer more or less wouldn't make any difference."

I meant to read this in 2022 as my pick for non-patriarchal society, but ran out of time. I‘m so pleased I didn‘t set it aside, because I loved this!

It‘s also really hard to summarize. The planet is still fighting a centuries-long war. Nyx, formerly a queen‘s assassin, is a bounty hunter who will take any job. She has a team of mercenaries.⬇️

Bookzombie The world is so interesting and I was completely absorbed. Another Litsy reviewer used “bugpunk” to describe it and that‘s accurate. There are so many bugs, lol. #Booked2023 #anypartofatrilogy #SeriesLove2023 because now I have to finish the trilogy. 🙂 (edited) 14mo
Reggie Lol, you had me at bugpunk. 14mo
Bookzombie @Reggie 🙂 I wish I had come up with the term. There are magicians that can use the bugs to do things, they also replace fuels and make weapons using them. Then there are also some big bugs. 14mo

LaRose is the name of the 5 year old son of the Ojibwe couple, Landreaux and Emmaline. LaRose is a family name passed down through generations. This is the first time that its bearer is male. A tragic accident causes LaRose to be given to another family. Louise Erdrich is a skilled writer. At times so beautiful and often just as ugly. A bit too much grit for my taste.I have enjoyed her other books more. #authoramonth #booked2023 #anypartofatrilogy

Cinfhen Excellent review!! I couldn‘t get through this one in print or audio and I started another one but it‘s not holding my attention either 1y

If you enjoy Bernard Cornwell‘s battle scenes, then you‘re set up to enjoy this one. Blood and any other bodily fluids graphically described. Complaints about too much swearing in some reviews, needless to say I didn‘t notice. A bit confused about the drug use. What was available then?
I shall be reading the rest of the trilogy definitely.

MicheleinPhilly I spy a decapitated toy, Sansa! 😉 1y
TrishB @MicheleinPhilly it WAS a snake. She‘s currently sleeping on it‘s head! They don‘t last long but she loves ripping them up. 1y

MicheleinPhilly Pickles has some that she murders IMMEDIATELY and then others that are her “babies.” There is no rhyme or reason to which is which. 🙄 1y
Cinfhen Yay!!! 1y
RamsFan1963 I will definitely have to check this out. I really enjoyed his non-fiction book Powers and Thrones. 1y
LeahBergen Thanks for the update! I‘ll grab a copy. 😘 1y
squirrelbrain Henry‘s had two of those exact snakes - one when he was tiny that lasted a while as he only had puppy teeth; number two didn‘t last so long! 1y
Centique Swearing? Who notices swearing? 😂😂😂 I had a friend who used to make that comment after movies and I‘d be “what world are you even living in” 🙄 1y
TrishB @RamsFan1963 @LeahBergen hope you enjoy when you get there. 1y
TrishB @squirrelbrain Sansa loves destroying them! @MicheleinPhilly Sansa missed the ‘babies‘ step out! 1y
TrishB @Centique what swearing 🤷‍♀️ 1y
Caroline2 Yes, I‘ve heard a lot about the drug use which has put me off. It doesn‘t sound very historical or relevant yet feels like it‘s to fulfil some Essex Boys stereotype. 🙄 1y
TrishB @Caroline2 it‘s only one person so in that sense it‘s not a gang doing it. (And the rest don‘t like it) I just didn‘t really get what it added or actually what it was- as it‘s a trilogy I suppose it may be explained eventually. 1y
DGRachel I‘m so glad you‘ve read/reviewed it. Goodreads left me on the fence. Off to grab my copy…☺️ 13mo
TrishB @DGRachel hope you like it! 13mo

😭😔💔
I‘m feeling tender after finishing the Beartown trilogy with The Winners.

Backman has a way of telling you what‘s going to happen, then breaking your heart anyway when it does. His books hit my emotions like no other author.

I loved this.

JenReadsAlot I had a bit of a book hangover with this one. 1y
Prairiegirl_reading I‘ve been listening in the car and am at the point where I‘m scared to keep listening for fear I‘ll show up at work in a puddle of tears. I‘ll have to do some audio puzzling this weekend. 1y
Soubhiville @Prairiegirl_reading I cried multiple times, both at work and in the car. Luckily I have a private workroom 😬🤣 1y
