The Sleeper and the Spindle
The Sleeper and the Spindle | Neil Gaiman
A thrillingly reimagined fairy tale from the truly magical combination of author Neil Gaiman and illustrator Chris Riddell – weaving together a sort-of Snow White and an almost Sleeping Beauty with a thread of dark magic, which will hold readers spellbound from start to finish. On the eve of her wedding, a young queen sets out to rescue a princess from an enchantment. She casts aside her fine wedding clothes, takes her chain mail and her sword and follows her brave dwarf retainers into the tunnels under the mountain towards the sleeping kingdom. This queen will decide her own future – and the princess who needs rescuing is not quite what she seems. Twisting together the familiar and the new, this perfectly delicious, captivating and darkly funny tale shows its creators at the peak of their talents.

Two thumbs up! Not only is this a retelling of a fairy tale -- which takes a dark turn and upends the story we think we know -- but it combines two fairy tales and throws in hints of others. Also, no princes were needed to save anyone! Extremely well done IMHO.

I know I‘ve been reading a lot of Gaiman this year. But his books are so magical. And I am craving magic! Just spent the day playing D&D. So I took a nice long bath and read this quick and beautiful read! Love true illustrations ! Love the fact that there is no prince to save the day only one badass queen and a princess. So beautiful so empowering ! Love love love ❤️🖤❤️

Neil Gaiman is just too wonderful. This novella is an utterly lovely take on Snow White and Sleeping Beauty. I love the attention paid to fairytale motifs 💖 Get yourself a print copy of this, rather than a Kindle one, (like I did), as the illustrations are astounding.

This story will prick your imagination and set you to dreaming. I love how Gaiman took iconic fairytales, spun them together, and turned them on their ears. And he did it in a away that leaves the reader inspired and spinning their own tales. Riddell‘s illustrations depict Gaiman‘s words beautifully, while hinting at more stories unfolding beyond what was written. Together, they‘ve created a wonderful book and so much more. Two thumbs way way up!

I read this as part of #Booked2019 to satisfy my #fairytaleretelling requirement. First, let me say that I am not into fairy tale retellings. I chose this because it was short and well, short. Nice and short. I did enjoy this more than I thought I would and I love the changes to the original story. Also, I listened to the full cast audio, but I‘ve heard the illustrations are beautiful.

JaclynW Thus is a great one! The illustrations are lovely. 5mo
Cinfhen As far as fairytale retellings go, this one is manageable. The illustrations are amazing but the rest of it,is just ok. Like you said...Thank God it‘s short 💕 5mo

@Cinfhen saved my life with this one. I was dreading #fairytaleretelling for #booked2019. It‘s just not my thing. But this was short and beautifully illustrated. It‘s the retelling of Sleeping Beauty, with Snow White and her dwarves thrown in. I didn‘t love it, but it was well done and brief.

I found it on #hoopla, but I would have preferred it in print. The illustrations didn‘t translate well on my iPad.

IamIamIam Have you checked out The Lunar Chronicles? I'm wary of a lot of sci fi but once I got started, I came up for air 6 books later and blindsided! 😂 6mo

Special thanks to @erzascarletbookgasm @ravenlee & @Carolyn11215 for bringing this super short #FairytaleRetelling to my attention for #Booked2019 🌹😴👸🏼🧚‍♀️👑 I thought the illustrations were magical but the story was not my jam. 5 stars on the artwork but only 2.5 for the writing #SorryNotSorry

Melissa_J Unpopular opinion here (whispers softly), but I don‘t like Neil Gaiman. I‘ve tried to read several of his books and the only one I liked was Stardust, and even in that case I thought the movie was way better. I think I might be alone in this opinion. 6mo
BarbaraBB @Melissa_J No you‘re not. I read one if his books and am not eager to try another 💜 6mo
PickwickPlockPlock @Melissa_J You're not alone. I love Good Omens, but then that was a collaboration with Terry Pratchett, who I adore. I read Neverwhere, The Graveyard Book and Coraline. In all cases I thought the ideas were interesting, but I didn't like the execution much. Something is missing in his work to make me like his books. I have Stardust here unread, I will probably give that a chance if you liked it. 6mo

Carolyn11215 Wouldn‘t life be boring if we all only liked the same things?! Agree that the illustrations are far better than the retelling in this one but for me that was because the story was sooo short. Absolutely adored The Graveyard Book and Omens. Struggled a bit with American Gods but ultimately liked it. Watching the series they‘ve made out of it helped probably. 6mo
Cinfhen So happy to hear I‘m not alone in my feelings towards Gaiman @Melissa_J @BarbaraBB @PickwickPlockPlock and I agree @Carolyn11215 that‘s what makes Litsy so great 😻 6mo
TrishB I‘m with you all! I have this on my list for fairy tale too - but mainly because I thought it would be over quick!! I haven‘t really enjoyed anything by Gaiman and really disliked American Gods. 6mo
Vexingcircumstance I haven‘t read this one but I love Neil Gaiman. He writes a LOT, though. They can‘t all be winners. He‘s had a few short stories, comics and one book that I wasn‘t super fond of. 6mo
Cinfhen It‘s super quick @TrishB like over a cuppa and you could be finished 😜 6mo
Cinfhen I‘ve only seen HEAPS of LOVE for NG so it was a bit refreshing to see I‘m not the only one who doesn‘t love his work @Vexingcircumstance which isn‘t to say that he isn‘t gifted. Anybody who can create as much as he has is obviously brilliant 6mo
Zelma @Melissa_J not alone at all. I am pretty vocal about Gaiman not being my jam. He is an awesome human being but I don‘t care for his novels. @BarbaraBB @PickwickPlockPlock (edited) 6mo
TrishB I may decide to do this - Gaiman again - have this at home as hubby a massive fan. Neither calling to me yet - but good to have choices!! 6mo
Vexingcircumstance @cinfhen I know what it‘s like to dislike a popular writer. I don‘t like Stephen King. Lol. I mean he seems like a nice enough guy and I like a few of his short stories and one book but the rest of his stuff is either 100% boring to me or the first half is awesome and then the second half is awful and I regret reading that far. 6mo
ravenlee I love Good Omens, but have struggled with either author on his own. I liked Sleeper because of the twists, and wish there had been more, but can see it not working for another reader. I couldn‘t get into Neverwhere, Coraline creeps me out to the point I don‘t want to try, American Gods was super weird (but I‘m ready to try again as a more mature reader). It‘s all kind of a crapshoot. 6mo
4thhouseontheleft At least it was short! 😉 6mo
Jee_HookedOnBookz Yeah I thought so too. Good thing it's short 😅 6mo

This was a good book, with a decent plot, and I liked the mix of graphic novel with regular text. What I didn‘t like was how short the book was—I started it with high hopes and then all of a sudden it was done! Also, I had to stop halfway through and google whether this was part of a series, because it felt like there should have been at least one book before and after this. I know it is a loose retelling, but that wasn‘t the vibe I was getting.
