With the Fire on High
With the Fire on High | Elizabeth Acevedo
From the New York Times bestselling author of the National Book Award longlist title The Poet X comes a dazzling novel in prose about a girl with talent, pride, and a drive to feed the soul that keeps her fire burning bright. Ever since she got pregnant freshman year, Emoni Santiagos life has been about making the tough decisionsdoing what has to be done for her daughter and her abuela. The one place she can let all that go is in the kitchen, where she adds a little something magical to everything she cooks, turning her food into straight-up goodness. Even though she dreams of working as a chef after she graduates, Emoni knows that its not worth her time to pursue the impossible. Yet despite the rules she thinks she has to play by, once Emoni starts cooking, her only choice is to let her talent break free.

A delightful story for foodies. Emoni has the gift of cooking in which she's able to create magic. She's had a lot thrown her way - no mom in her life, an absentee father, a baby at 14. Yet, she also has her champions to hold her up - her abuela, teachers, her best friend. She has to navigate the world of still being a child while having a child. Figuring out the future while retaining her heritage and past. Acevedo dishes up another perfect read.

Emoni has a lot on her plate- it‘s her senior year of high school, she has a toddler daughter, and she works to keep the household running with her abuela.

When an unexpected elective comes up, Emoni puts her mad cooking skills to the test as she works to balance family, school, and a new love.

I‘ll read (listen) to anything from Acevedo. She is fantastic. Poets writing fiction is the best.

This was terrific. The story of Emoni, a teen mom finishing high school with her grandmother‘s support and love. She‘s working hard, nurturing her passion for cooking, and trying to be the best mom she can be. But graduation is nearing and she has some big life changes coming. Heartwarming and real.

Acevedo has become one of my favorite narrators and the audiobook for this one is top notch. I‘ll read anything she writes or reads!

I loved every second of this book!!! Emoni was such a beautiful and vibrant character that I felt her jump out of the pages and into real life. I felt her pain, her joy, her hardships and her triumphs. My only critique was that it felt a little too perfect in parts, but sometimes it's nice to see things actually work out! This concludes my #LitsyAtoZ pick for W and my "Book that should be made into a movie" for #Popsugar2019

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This is definitely a slow book and there‘s no action per say, but the writing and amount of culture you see and the way the author sucks you in. I absolutely adore this book and the amount of talk about curly hair 😱😍. Overall this is one that will go on my favorites list. This book had me go interested and wanting to know what happens to Emoni when she graduates? Will she go to college? Will she become a chef?

SW-T You so want Emoni to succeed! A sequel would be awesome 😊 1mo

Emoni has something special and so does this book. Despite being a single mother at 15, she is on track to graduate high school and has the amazing talent to bring people‘s emotions out through her perfectly spiced food.

It seems like a perfect fit when her school starts a culinary program, but the chef tests her to learn the rules before a life-changing trip to Spain.

Acevedo brings lively prose and storytelling to Emoni‘s life! 5⭐️

I thought the pacing was just slightly off, especially in the middle, but by the end I didn't really care. Enjoyed the characters and Emoni's journey as a high school senior, single mother, and aspiring chef, and I *loved* the food details.

VioletBramble I loved The Poet X and considered getting this one. When I read the cover blurb it didn‘t sound like something I‘d want to read. But if there are food descriptions I may have to change my mind. 2mo

Elizabeth Acevedo just blows me away. I read chapter one of With the Fire on High and thought, "This is nice, but I don't know how it will be able to compare to The Poet X." And then I read on . . . and didn't stop. Yep, this was a one-sitting read for me. Acevedo excels at building flawed, believable characters, and watching Emani fight to honor both her obligations to others-- (continued in comments)

UnabridgedPod her daughter Emma, her 'Buela, her friend Angelica, and the new people who have come into her life--and to herself and her dreams is captivating. I cried more than once. I laughed. My heart ached, and at other times I felt giddy with joy. I cannot WAIT for this episode of Unabridged! 2mo

All the stars for this YA novel about a teenager balancing being a mom, being a granddaughter, and pursuing her dream of being a chef. I can‘t relate very much to any of those experiences BUT I still totally connected to the main character Emoni. I liked that even though there was a potential romantic interest for her it wasn‘t overly focused on that at all. I highly recommend this one!

I didn‘t enjoy this as much as The Poet X, but still a good read. This felt a little more YA and some of the situations around dealing with a toddler while in high school seemed a little watered down. I do like Acevedo‘s writing, though, and she does a great job narrating her own audiobooks.

I loved it. I'm not a huge YA reader but this #audiobook is everywhere and happens to be excellent. The hype is real!
Food, teen mom, high school life, financial struggles, hometown/cultural pride, romance, family love. And the audiobook is clearly the way to go with the author providing the phenomenal narration.

I really appreciated this book throughout. I love that Acevedo decided to shed light on some of the not so glamorous aspects of being a teenager. To my knowledge, there aren‘t many YA titles that focus on teen pregnancy in way that depicts positive feelings towards parenthood. While Emoni definitely experienced hardships in terms of being a single mother, she never expressed regret which was refreshing.

This story is about a young mother trying to find herself and the courage needed to take the next step in her culinary life. She learns about what she wants to do, what's best for her and her daughter and realizing that she deserves to be happy just like anyone else. Definitely a fun, summer read but not something I see myself reaching for again in the future.

LOVED IT! I listened to the audio read by the author, and her voice just made this for me. Emoni is starting her senior year of high school being raised by her abuela and raising a daughter of her own. Her love of cooking has always been a comfort for her, so when a new culinary arts elective is offered it feels perfect. She wants to follow her dreams but the responsibility of being a mom, a student and doing what is best for all is on her mind.

I finished “With the Fire on High“ & immediately foisted the #audiobook upon a friend of mine. It's the kind of “Good“ you want to share. I didn't like it quite as much as “The Poet X“ (I felt like it was [I feel silly saying this, given the titles] less poetic) -- but the characters are compelling, lovable, & they feel real. Emoni's got big dreams & I dreamt right alongside her, smelling cinnamon the whole time.

How do you prepare for 5 days of prepping your house for a bunch of guests? I get an arsenal of audiobooks ready. #audiocleaning

I do not like freaking out and cleaning like a mad woman...knowing there will be very little time for reading or doing things I actually like. This helps.

By next Sunday night the house will be mine again. It will be better organized, cleaner, and hopefully good memories will be made from spending time with family!

Often, the thing that determines whether I love a book or just like it a lot is how badly I WANT things for the characters. I wanted so many, many things for Emoni, and I drank in every last one of her efforts to improve her culinary game, be a great mom to Baby Girl, and figure out her relationships. What a great book.

(Except she does let out THREE breaths she didn‘t even know she was holding, which is three too many. Editor, where were you?)

TobeyTheScavengerMonk This has showed up on a lot of Latinx YA lists that I now read for obsessively for work. Sounds good but might be a bit much for 8th graders (I am still a bad judge of this). Repeated phrases drive me crazy. 2mo
xicanti @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I think it might work for some of the more mature kids. The main character is a young mother, but there isn‘t any on-page sex or anything. (There are a couple of scenes where characters DISCUSS whether or not they‘ll have sex, but I remember those bits as pretty tame.) Mostly, it‘s about pursing your dreams. 2mo

I loved everything about this audiobook - a strong character who has overcome some difficult struggles and figures out how to follow her dreams while also being true to the people she loves. There were supportive and loving relationships between the women in the book (always something I‘m looking for in YA) and the romance was believable but didn‘t dominate the story. Excellent storytelling!
