I‘m always terrible at trying to guess the endings of mysteries and thrillers- but I was able to narrow this one down pretty quickly. I still enjoyed this book and recommended it to a friend who enjoys this genre.
I devoured this book in a day. Excellent story with complex characters. I really enjoyed the character of the mother in law
Although a mystery this is also a story about words and their intent - how we can mean something good and it comes out the wrong way.
I really enjoyed hearing from both the mother-in-law and the daughter-in-law in this book. It was so interesting to hear both sides of the story. The ending was surprising and I loved it. Luckily I am blessed with an amazing mother-in-law! 4⭐️ #2020book11
This lacked the compelling urgency I love in a thriller but was still enjoyable. A domestic mystery, this was packed with complicated, dysfunctional relationships, multi-layered characters and a ‘who done it‘ mystery. A reminder that the things we don‘t say often say more than we think. Compulsively addicting, this immediately drew me in and engaged me right to the end.
I've read her other books and enjoyed them, and this book was no different. I actually think it might be my favorite! The story was really interesting, and you weren't sure who you were rooting for - the mother in law, or the daughter in law. Both were narrating the book and they told the events from both of their POV. I did not see the ending coming - this was so good!!
Had a rough week took a break from reading. My father in law passed away couldn‘t concentrate. Going to try reading this book again, need an escape from my emotions. The title is a little disturbing at a time like this, but everyone says it‘s great. So I shall try and read the night away. Next few days will be rather hard for my family and husband.
The best escape is pouring your soul into a book while forgetting reality.
Sally Hepworth creates an entertaining mystery, which at its heart is a compulsive and thoroughly engaging family drama, examining the intricacies of family dynamics and the expectations, complications and realities of family relationships. I found it to be relatable, as both a mother and daughter-in-law, and while this was my first book by Sally Hepworth, it will definitely not be my last. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #netgalley #popsugar2020 #bookyoumeanttoreadin2019
Scouting out wedding venues. On this “beautiful day” suppose to be 70 in nyc but felt like 30 because of the wind and water. Chilled for a bit with this book I tagged. Very interesting 🤔
Doesn‘t it give you game of thrones vibes? Lol, well maybe bad picture but huge castles around here
What a great way to start off 2020 right! I think this book is so amazing. I blame this book for sleepless nights because I could not put it down! My heart grieved for Diana and the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law bond that was lost. I'm going to have to check out Ms. Hempworth's other works!
Downloaded this one to listen to while on a Christmas cruise through Australia and New Zealand since it was about a mother out to destroy Christmas and narrated by an Australian. Under those circumstances it was good entertainment, but overall it was a little over the top but at least not boring. I‘ve suffered through worse.
Anyone read this? I‘m only on the second chapter but I like the writing.
Success! With this book I accomplished something I‘ve never done before: I read the first half of the book, then had to return it to the library for about 5 weeks, then borrowed it again and finished it! The key was writing myself a detailed synopsis of what I‘d read and where I stopped, so I was able to jump back into the story. I really enjoyed this book and felt drawn in (both times!). Part mystery but mostly a book about family relationships.
I really liked this mystery, especially the way the histories of the characters and their relationships were developed by relaying past events. Complicated family relationships, people with too much money, and a suicide (or was it murder?) - what‘s not to love?
I‘m sitting down to start this book (definitely because it was recommended by various Littens!), and this is right at the start in the Acknowledgements.
I can already tell I‘m going to like this author. 😋
Sally Hepworth's The Mother-in-Law was marketed, as far as I could tell, as a thriller, and while there's a mysterious death at its center, its nuance made it, for me, something in a category of its own. The novel alternates between past and present, perspective and perspective. Told alternately from the points of view of Lucy and her mother-in-law Diana, (continued in comments)
This wasn‘t what I expected. There is a mystery & a twist but what really kept me reading were the relationships between the characters. As a daughter, former daughter-in-law and mom to a daughter (now almost 21), I thought the different perspectives really helped to understand Amy and her mother-in-law, Diane. It‘s also a reminder to be careful what you say & how you say things to people. Mother/daughter relationships are so complicated! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The #Coffin count is surprisingly high in this domestic thriller! I ended up staying up WAY past my bedtime and finished this in practically one sitting! It has its predictable moments but it sure hooks you in with fast pacing and a good balance between the perspectives offered. #Scarathlon #TeamStoker 2 pts #ChillingPhotoChallenge #BlackCat #FallIsBooked
This book was quite different from what I expected. There is a mystery, but I wouldn‘t really qualify it as a thriller. It was more of a slow burn for me. Even the twist/reveal near the end was not a huge surprise. That said, it was an interesting look at family dynamics and the relationship between Lucy and Diana.
This book was GREAT! If you love a mystery that keeps you guessing until the very end, then READ THIS! A well written page turner. I will be reading more by this author. For the record, I love my mother-in-law. I‘m one of those lucky people who has a wonderful mother-in-law. 😊
I really enjoyed this one, probably more than I was expecting! The mystery of what happened to the mother-in-law kept me guessing and I loved how seeing everything unfold from both the MIL and main character allowed you to really see how differently two people can view the same situations. You never really know what someone else has gone through or what they think until you communicate! Solid 🌟🌟🌟🌟
This wasn‘t what I expected, but that ended up being a good thing. I was expecting a twisty psychological thriller. But it was more a straight mystery, mixed with a family drama. Almost reminded me of a Liane Moriarty book, where it‘s a mystery but it‘s more character driven.
This is the pick for our IRL book club. It‘s a thriller with a bit of sophistication. We know at the outset that Lucy‘s MIL was a cold, closed-off woman and that she is now dead. But was it suicide or murder? The novel slowly peels back the layers so that bit by bit, the reader begins to understand the familial relationships and circumstances. The ending was not what I expected!
Among the slew of domestic thrillers I‘ve been reading, this one stands out. With complex characters, it makes you think about how perception is everything. The way this story unfolded was really interesting, and I found the ending pretty satisfying.
Trying to stay cool in my usual lunchtime spot with Sally Hepworth today. Can‘t remember where I read about this, it it looks like it‘ll be a good one.
More than a thriller, it seems a family drama with a mystery. Maybe not the great story, slow in its development but it was so amazingly interesting to see the dynamic between Diana and Lucy personalities! This novel suggest you to listen and evaluate the two perspectives of a situation before you make a conclusion about someone's behavior, or about what happened. That psychological narration was fantastic. Sad ending. @Avanders gave this bottle 4⭐️

I listened to this book on Audible. At the end, there was an interview with the author. It seems that most of her books are about “women‘s issues“. This one was a great psychological thriller and it hit all the right buttons. I‘m looking forward to reading (or listening to) her other books.
Lucy and her mother in law Diana have never really gotten along all that well. Nothing too unusual or suspicious about that, until Diana is found dead with a suicide note. The note reveals she has cancer and doesn't want to live anymore....questions are raised about Lucy however once it is discovered that Diana didn't have cancer. An addictive read that had me spellbound until the very end. #themotherinlaw #sallyhepworth #forreadingaddicts dress
This is more of a family drama than a mystery/thriller. The matriarch of a family seemingly commits suicide. While the police work to figure out of it was foul play or not, the narrative goes between alternating POV of mother and daughter-in-law, past and present. It was a decent family drama but I was expecting more of a mystery book.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: This was pretty good. Complicated familial relationships and a suicide that could be a murder? Sign me up!!
