A Reliable Wife
A Reliable Wife | Robert Goolrick
37 posts | 147 read | 85 to read
Rural Wisconsin, 1909. In the bitter cold, Ralph Truitt, a successful businessman, stands alone on a train platform waiting for the woman who answered his newspaper advertisement for "a reliable wife." But when Catherine Land steps off the train from Chicago, she's not the "simple, honest woman" that Ralph is expecting. She is both complex and devious, haunted by a terrible past and motivated by greed. Her plan is simple: she will win this man's devotion, and then, ever so slowly, she will poison him and leave Wisconsin a wealthy widow. What she has not counted on, though, is that Truitt a passionate man with his own dark secrets has plans of his own for his new wife. Isolated on a remote estate and imprisoned by relentless snow, the story of Ralph and Catherine unfolds in unimaginable ways. With echoes of Wuthering Heights and Rebecca, Robert Goolrick's intoxicating debut novel delivers a classic tale of suspenseful seduction, set in a world that seems to have gone temporarily off its axis.

#AyUpAugust when a rich lonely widow places an ad for a reliable wife someone should probably warn him #DontMarryHer or maybe when a rich lonely widow places an ad for a reliable wife, somebody should warn her!!! A gothic tale of cat and mouse. I really liked this book and I‘m surprised to see such a low rating.

Day 25 - #wife #anewchapter

I read this book in 2010 and have never forgotten the story!

“A weighty psychodrama laced with Hitchcockian suspense.”-- Time Out New York
( USA Today)

"[A] beautifully written, beautifully dark book. Goolrick is a superb writer."― Chicago Sun-Times
( Washington Post)

“A killer debut novel . . . suspenseful and erotic . . . [A] chillingly engrossing plot . . . good to the riveting end.” –USA Today

1/5⭐The characters were so thin you could see through them to the author's self-indulgent twaddle. I thought maybe I wouldn't like the characters but they'd still be compelling, but nope. Between Ralph's CONSTANT, detailed thoughts about sex &/or religious-induced guilt for wanting sex, the complete pointlessness of this extended description in regard to plot or characterization, & the repetitiveness of the narrative, I was turned off. #projectnew

Samplergal I agree. You were kind in your review. 😂 13mo

So repetitive, so very sex-obsessed, and just overall "meh". The characters' motivations seemed bizarre and for that reason I couldn't really connect with them. Historical fiction, set in frigid Wisconsin in 1907. Not terrible, but not something I looked forward to reading. Others in #bookclub enjoyed it though!

CarolynM It's not my usual kind of thing, but I liked it when I read it. 14mo

#bookclub is Monday. I'm at 61% in the ebook. Very repetitive so far, and I'm wondering what others are going to think of it. 🤔 #libby

Kaye I‘ve started this several times and couldn‘t get into it. Not saying it‘s not good. Maybe the timing wasn‘t right. 14mo
cherinium I recently read this for #lmpbc. It was the book I selected. I came away from it wishing there had been a lot less sexual content, but appreciating the examination of love and relationships--both familial and romantic. I think I gave it 3 stars. 14mo
Chelsea.Poole @Kaye I have to force myself since it's a book club choice. Otherwise, I may have abandoned it as well! 14mo
Chelsea.Poole @cherinium I agree, there's quite a bit of sex! It may get awkward discussing it at the library in a few days!! 🤔 14mo

#day18 #lyricalapril #moneygrabber Read this one with my book club and I think it fits the prompt perfectly today .... "An ad is placed for "a reliable wife" by a rich man...Catherine responds saying that she is 'a simple, honest woman.' She is, of course, anything but honest, and is determined to marry this man, kill him, slowly and carefully, leaving her a wealthy widow....But he has other plans"...I found it an enjoyably, gothic tale.... ?

I did love this book! And Goolrick's others also. But alas, not only does this have a headless woman on the cover, the dress is wrong for the era. The beginning of the book very clearly states that it is 1907, but this dress is more like the 1880s. Covers that get it wrong is a big pet peeve of mine! #headlesscovers

Sapphire I read A Reliable Wife years ago on a flight to Amsterdam. The security officer in customs picked it up and asked me what is this. I was surprised and unsure of his concern. I said it's a novel, fiction. He laughed so hard and called across to other guards holding it up and shouted, it's FICTION! Which was even funnier after finishing the book (which I greatly enjoyed, separate from the travel memory) 3y
