I have #thefreeblackwomenslibrary reading challenge to thank for introducing me to romance novels (a genre I‘d not considered before) and for re-introducing YA back into my life! I love expanding my reading world 🌍

What are your favourite genres? And are there any genres that surprised you once you gave them a chance?

#diversitymatters

Lesliereads literary fiction, mysteries, memoirs and poetry are immediate draws but I love when books of other genres spice up my reading life! 18h

December 2nd - #adventrecommends Day 2

I'm way behind on my own challenge, so I'm desperately trying to catch up! I've read so many good books this year that people should know about and want to post them all 😂

For day two it's Children of Blood and Bone :) I loved this and can't wait to read the next one!

Dragged my mom along with me to the Nashville Public Library for Salon@615 to hear Tomi Adeyemi speak about her Children of Blood and Bone series. What I love about Children of Blood and Bone is how unique it is...a West African inspired fantasy, with all Black characters AND metaphors for social issues that are present today. This book is different. It‘s special. There‘s nothing else quite like it.

100 % recommend

After "Shatter me" audiobook shattered my hope of finding a good audiobook ever! I stumbled into "Children of Blood and Bone", oh boy!! To have found it so soon after a bad experience is a blessing. I am loving this book which is made better by the audio narrator. Her voice is perfect, her narration, her accent, oh! What's not to love?? Am just 17% into the book but it's wonderful. I already want to devote time & finish it.

It took me a while to read (I actually had to return to the library in between!) BUT it was a great read! I can't wait for the next installment in the series, releasing next week! Adeyemi is a young author (my age!) and she's crafted such a wonderful, magical universe that contains depth and heart. I recommend for all the YA Fantasy fans.

Liatrek I‘m starting my reread of this book today so it will all be fresh in my memory next week. 3w
Velvetfur I read this only recently, and yes it's a big read isn't it?! I couldn't *quite* work out the ending though, I mean I think I know but I'm not sure.... It's an obvious cliffhanger though isn't it? 😊 3w
dainarmb @Velvetfur definite cliffhanger, but the synopsis for the next installment gives some clue 👏🏽 3w
Velvetfur @dainarmb Oohh I didn't know that was already available! Thanks, I'll check it out 😁 3w

Wow, wow, wow! This book is incredible. The world is Rich and lush, and the characters deep and relatable. There are some big twists that made me actually set the book down for a minute or two to absorb, and I found myself extremely attached to the characters. I can't wait until I can read the second one!

Liatrek I just pulled this off my shelf to do a reread before the next one comes out December 3rd 😊 3w

Trying out a new approach for reading challenges in 2020. I made a list of the top books I wish I had gotten around to reading this year, and I'll be referring to this list first while picking books for RC prompts. Let's see how long this lasts... 😉

jb72 Great idea! I‘m making a list of those books I‘ve been meaning to read for a long time. 1mo
wanderinglynn Great idea! 👍🏻 1mo
4thhouseontheleft @jb72 That was the original idea for this list, but I noticed that most of the books that I have owned for a while aren't on here. OOPS! 😂 I think I need a 4th column for books I have owned the longest. Yep...doing that now! 1mo

“I won‘t let your ignorance silence my pain.”

This was such an important quote for me. This entire story was powerful and amazing but this quote really summed up the whole book. No one should suffer so that others can remain in comfortable ignorance. Read this book, it‘s amazing.

I‘ll be honest, I loved this book but at about 80% it was very hard to read, even though I wanted to read it so bad! I eventually pushed through, but after powering through the book to that point, I was extremely invested and the book itself was intense. There‘s a few brief torture scenes and fallout that completely derailed me and was difficult to get through. But the book was worth the read, probably the most important read of the year for me.

gonna be honest and say I feel like I'd enjoy this book more if I'd read it in middle or early high school BUT that being said it has some strong points. I really enjoyed Adeyemi's worldbuilding, setting, magic system, and integration of real-world social issues into parts of the plot 👍 the romance is pretty blah though, and the book doesn't feel like it picks up until the 2nd half 🤔

#OctoberTBR

- A recent #BOTM (The Gifted School)
- A re-read for bookclub (going to try Daisy on Audio this time)
- The tagged book & Brideshead Revisited are to tie up #Booked2019
- Curtain & The Little Prince are for #Pop19
- And the bottom 3 are calling to me from my night stand!

4thhouseontheleft I had a hard time getting into the physical copy of Daisy Jones, but am finding the audiobook fantastic! 3mo
WhatWouldJaneDo I just listened to Daisy Jones on audio and it was incredible! The cast is great and you really feel for all the characters. 3mo
marleed I loved this audiobook but had to own the print. TJR places such great lines in the mouths of her characters that I want the print reference. ... it was also fun to reread for nuances once I knew the ending. Dang - I wish I could type more about that. 3mo

The start of the story was a bit slow for me, it felt like any other YA book I read in the last year. Yet the more pages I turned the quicker I fell in love with the characters; their feelings relatable, their motivation pure and their actions derived from their past experience. The story is set in a beautiful world that I had fun discovering and am looking forward to dive into more in the sequel.

Zélie‘s strong willed, hot headed and a fighter. Also, she‘s hilarious, her quick jabs and snaps at Amari tickled me to core, but also provided some nice breaks. TBH - my only gripe was the “connection” with the “Little Prince” I listened to this book on Audible and I really enjoyed hearing the Nigerian dialect - it allowed me to really connect with each character.

Tomi Adeyemi has created an amazing world and complex characters in this book. I love Zélie as the strong leading woman of the story and her relationships with her brother, Amari and Inan. I can‘t wait to read the next segment of the story and what other works of art result from this awesome story!

bookladyreads I could not get into this book, which was disappointing because I had it on my tbr for a long time. But I really didn't like this book. I'm not sure if it's because the book just wasn't my cup of tea or because I was still on a total high after reading Daisy Jones & The Six. 3mo
Cosmos_Moon Huh... I‘ve not heard of that book. I‘ll have to check it out. I‘ll admit for me the first few chapters were a bit slow when Amari was in the palace & I‘m not usually a big fantasy reader, but once she escaped and met up with Zèlie, I was flying through it. Curious about the animal names, I googled them & found they‘re making a move & a 2nd book is coming out in December this year. So that made me excited. I enjoy seeing movie interpretations. 3mo
Cosmos_Moon It‘s not much of a spoiler... also really liked the author‘s note at the end. (edited) 3mo

A powerful story but I had to keep taking breaks because it was a little intense. There is a lot of violence.

The characters are very different from each other and all have some obstacle to overcome before embracing their destinies. They are all likeable and in likeable 3 dimensional characters which makes the trials they go through very intense and personal. Highly recommend. #diversebooks
