I can't recommend this history of pulp paperbacks enough! It's both hilarious and incredibly informative.

This book made me want to run to the nearest flea market, and used Book emporiums and scour the shelves for titles featured that I somehow missed out on. Silly plots, silly titles, but all horror. The history of horror paperbacks during this time was lovingly told by Grady Hendrix who was obviously a Super fan of the genre and time frame

While the book itself is interesting and brings back memories of books that my sisters and I have read, I don't recommend the audiobook. The narrator is okay, except for making a number of mispronounciations, including Dachau and Tutankhamun, which only the context made me understand what he said.

Such an awesome book for anyone who is a fan of horror. So much information and awesome pictures. Can't wait to buy a few of the books in here and read them.

One more book to add to my #screamathon total too.

kamoorephoto You have NO idea what a cool guy Grady Hendrix is either (unless you meet him, I suppose!). I met him for his book launch of We Sold Our Souls recently and he is the quirkiest, coolest, nice guy. He signed my mountain of books (I have them all, back to Satan Loves You), and put on a long presentation to go with his book launch. To anyone else thinking of getting this book: it‘s impeccably researched and a joy to look at (if you love horror)!! 🖤 9mo

I had high hopes for this book, based on what I'd heard about it and it didn't let me down. Grady Hendrix strikes a perfect balance of nostalgia and humour, capturing a warm fondness for an era of the genre when taste didn't matter and anything went. Perfect, essential reading for any horror fan.

Paperbacks from Hell includes a brief history of the “women running from houses” era. I recently read A Touch of the Witch, a concise and fun little tale of a young woman journeying from NYC to her odd ancestral New England Home with her almost committed boyfriend. Soon she‘s wrangling with a mysterious young woman and a creepy uncle. Does she have special powers herself? Everything plays out over a couple of days with the danger mounting steadily

Lovely all day date with my girlfriend today. Afternoon spent at our favourite coffee shop, dinner at a nice restaurant at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon then a stop at Barnes & Noble to browse until closing time. Wanted a copy of the tagged book but B&N had one copy each of the author‘s two previous novels (note to B&N; horror deserves its own section!) only. But found a Hard Case novel I wanted and the GF picked out a new bookmark for me. 😊

If you don‘t own this book, you aren‘t a fan of horror literature.

Although this is available on Audible, I suggest that you either purchase the print or ebook editions. Each page is filled with beautiful artwork, book recommendations, and history about the rise and fall of horror literature and its sub-genres.

Highly recommended!

You don‘t have to love horror to love this book.As Grady Hendrix digs through used bookstores to find 70s & 80s horror he was on to creating a book that‘s a labor of love. His insights into cover art & artists ,how trends live & die in publishing was fascinating. His creator/publisher bios in the back of the book add depth.Plus , where else will you find a book about nazi leprechauns?

GarthRanzz So weird! I just saw this yesterday when looking around the net for something else and was thinking I need to have this! 1y

It seems that during the 70s-80s, cover artists received worse treatment than most abused authors.

During these years, most publishers refused to cite the cover artist for their work. This was done because publishers didn‘t want to create celebrities out the artists who could demand greater pay or royalties.

Modernism really bastardizes horror covers. Example: look at how this cover goes from blatant horror to possible gay erotica. Oh well, the dude is hot and the concept sounds good, regardless. Into Kindle it goes.

Holloway House seems like they were a publisher from Hell. Although a demographic of indie authors are screwed out of fair royalties, this house took the cake. In 1959, while blatant racial issues remained unsettled, this publishing house provided the public with blaxsploitation literature.

Here‘s the problem. The house was constructed by whites who hired black authors. While the house profited, they paid their black authors bird feed royalties.

An engaging look at a period when horror fiction boomed. Starting with The Exorcist, Hendrix analyzes the shifts, styles, fascinations, and culture behind the boom as well as the factors that led to its end. Wisely, Hendrix includes pictures and sidebars about artists who illustrated many of the eye-catching covers of these books. Essential reading for horror fans and a lot of fun.

Being a collector of VHS tapes I was naturally intrigued by this book. The gory covers alone were enough to draw me to it, but the content inside the book thankfully matches the excellence of the cover. The book breaks down the books into topics (devil worshipping books, evil kids, etc) and as well as showing the bonkers covers from the 70s and 80s it gives breakdowns of the books plot. It also highlights unknown authors. Brilliant.
