this was a quick but interesting read 😊 I really enjoyed Hendrix's analysis of various pulp-y paperbacks though I wish parts of the books were organized better (history of horror fiction vs specific themes/recurring topics) and I would also love to hear more of Hendrix's recommendations for specific titles. Still, I enjoyed the analysis of the various time periods and how they influenced many of the books.

aaaaand my next #nightstand book 📚 honestly I just want to marathon Hendrix's stuff asap but my tbr stack is getting out of control 😭 so far this book has been awesome, with Hendrix detailing different cultural aspects from the time period that influenced various authors and I'm especially enjoying his spotlights on the cover artists in addition to the authors.

These check-ins sneak up on me every time. Seem to be doing fine for #bfc this week. Went on a walk I think at least 3 nights this week and drastically cut back on my junk food eating. Don‘t crave much in the way of junk food anymore which is great except junk food is cheap and my grocery budget is junk food friendly haha. Went to a book sale today and stood/walked for 4 hours so not a bad way to close out the week. #fitwizards @Clwojick

This book made me want to run to the nearest flea market, and used Book emporiums and scour the shelves for titles featured that I somehow missed out on. Silly plots, silly titles, but all horror. The history of horror paperbacks during this time was lovingly told by Grady Hendrix who was obviously a Super fan of the genre and time frame

While the book itself is interesting and brings back memories of books that my sisters and I have read, I don't recommend the audiobook. The narrator is okay, except for making a number of mispronounciations, including Dachau and Tutankhamun, which only the context made me understand what he said.

One more book to add to my #screamathon total too.

kamoorephoto You have NO idea what a cool guy Grady Hendrix is either (unless you meet him, I suppose!). I met him for his book launch of We Sold Our Souls recently and he is the quirkiest, coolest, nice guy. He signed my mountain of books (I have them all, back to Satan Loves You), and put on a long presentation to go with his book launch. To anyone else thinking of getting this book: it‘s impeccably researched and a joy to look at (if you love horror)!! 🖤 12mo

Paperbacks from Hell includes a brief history of the “women running from houses” era. I recently read A Touch of the Witch, a concise and fun little tale of a young woman journeying from NYC to her odd ancestral New England Home with her almost committed boyfriend. Soon she‘s wrangling with a mysterious young woman and a creepy uncle. Does she have special powers herself? Everything plays out over a couple of days with the danger mounting steadily

Lovely all day date with my girlfriend today. Afternoon spent at our favourite coffee shop, dinner at a nice restaurant at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon then a stop at Barnes & Noble to browse until closing time. If you don‘t own this book, you aren‘t a fan of horror literature.

Although this is available on Audible, I suggest that you either purchase the print or ebook editions. Each page is filled with beautiful artwork, book recommendations, and history about the rise and fall of horror literature and its sub-genres.

Highly recommended!

You don‘t have to love horror to love this book.As Grady Hendrix digs through used bookstores to find 70s & 80s horror he was on to creating a book that‘s a labor of love. His insights into cover art & artists ,how trends live & die in publishing was fascinating. His creator/publisher bios in the back of the book add depth.Plus , where else will you find a book about nazi leprechauns?

It seems that during the 70s-80s, cover artists received worse treatment than most abused authors.

During these years, most publishers refused to cite the cover artist for their work. This was done because publishers didn‘t want to create celebrities out the artists who could demand greater pay or royalties.

Holloway House seems like they were a publisher from Hell. Although a demographic of indie authors are screwed out of fair royalties, this house took the cake. In 1959, while blatant racial issues remained unsettled, this publishing house provided the public with blaxsploitation literature.

Here‘s the problem. The house was constructed by whites who hired black authors. While the house profited, they paid their black authors bird feed royalties.
