Plans for Saturday: reading The Witches in tandem with my best friend, Joshua—we have started our own little two-person long-distance book club—organizing my planner, spending some time in my reading journal, and organizing my podcast planning notebook, and reading for episode 53 of There Might Be Cupcakes podcast—the second episode on the Three Mothers series (Suspiria, etc.) of horror movies. Gonna be a good nerdy day. 🧁 🎧 #podcast

I have a question about the interpretation of Florens‘ denouement. I interpreted the violence between The Blacksmith, Florens, and Malaik as: Florens attacked The Blacksmith, lashing out at him and wounding him with his tongs, & attacked Malaik & killed him. Malaik, taking her place (in her eyes), was the symbolic stand-in for her brother, so she destroys him this time. The Spark Notes state Malaik lived. https://www.litcharts.com/lit/a-mercy ?

I read Beloved in Yale Summer School—Gender and Political Science class—and it changed the way I looked at the American novel. I also read The Bluest Eye in that class, and it changed how I looked at my own writing, at sparseness of word to tell a powerful gut-punch of a story.

She won the Nobel Prize, the Pulitzer Prize, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She was a treasure, as is her work. #tonimorrison #rip #love

First time reading any comic about the Avengers. Loved it. Looking forward to volume 2. So shiny. I want more details about her family, though. Who are the woman and child she lives with? Received this gorgeous ARC from Wednesday Books and Macmillan. What a fascinating story about the power of women, told as a dystopian fairy tale. From the blurb: “We‘re told we have the power to lure grown men from their beds. They believe our skin emits a powerful aphrodisiac...That‘s why we‘re banished for our sixteenth year: to release our magic into the wild before we‘re allowed to return to civilization.” #ARC

Ep 48 is for Mary: “You do not have to be good.

Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.

“If she had been successful in all she wanted to do on May 20, she would have fatally poisoned at least fifty people, shot to death at least a dozen schoolchildren, incinerated three members of the Rushe family in their home and burned down two schools with 440 children inside.” This case is much more catastrophic that I ever knew. This perpetrator is also infinitely more fascinating-& disturbed-than I could have imagined. #truecrime

This one upset my apple cart. I was supremely uncomfortable & enjoyed every minute of it.
I was a nanny in the distant past & I was disturbed to find myself empathizing with the monotony, the blurred & uncomfortably changing boundaries, the politics with the parents...this made the novel‘s claustrophobia that much creepier for me. The perfect illustration of how someone can get lost in their head so easily & convince themselves of nearly anything.

“This book is not for everyone. The authors are very honest about what Kermit Gosnell, and what Gosnell did went far beyond abortion. He murdered and decimated. If you are uncomfortable with Ed Gein‘s story, do not read this book, for Gosnell was the same type of hoarder.

Carla

Was listening to this, but had to return it to Audible. The narrator either thinks the paranormal is a joke, and assumes the author and the audience agrees with her, or is a hopeful stand-up comedian/voice actor. Every new item is read in a can-you-believe-this voice, and she gives fake accents to every scientist--which borders on tasteless when it comes to the East Asian doctor that the author was able to visit. I will wait to read it in print.

Now that we have arrived at our fateful destination, I feel strangely buoyant. I took this selfie in the coffin in the Poe museum's garden, cane and #Ravenclaw hat and all, to prove to myself that all is well...yet I fear to glance upon it. Therefore I post without looking upon my visage--Is all well once more? The birds still gather, yet they are so eerily still, and the black cats Edgar and Pluto seem to take no notice of them...#horror #Poe
