1. I‘m part of six book clubs.
2. Something with a “meaty” story, such as the tagged book. Maybe a little bit speculative too.
3. Discussions are more interesting when not everyone loves the book. HOWEVER, telling everyone at 6:59 that you hated the book when the meeting starts at 7:00…is not helpful.

Susanita @ozma.of.oz I don‘t always read every book every month. 😎 2y
ravenlee I have to say, one of the more interesting discussions of my old book club (though extremely short) was when we read Dorothy Must Die and everybody loathed it. Only two of us even finished, five others bailed, and a couple of them were kind of hedging at the start of our discussion but the other lady who finished it and I were just blasting out of the starting gate about why we despised it. It was pretty funny - we never agreed like that. 2y

My #Serbia pick for this month‘s #ReadAroundTheWorld challenge, this is one that‘s been on my #MtTBR for years! And I‘m so happy to finally have read this beautiful and impressive debut novel! The book has a purposefully ambiguous former-Yugoslavia setting and blends in war, a dash of magical realism and history. Grandfather and granddaughter are doctors so this also works for #COVIDHeroes for #Booked2021!

I absolutely loooooved this one! It was a beautiful story of a young woman trying to find answers about her beloved grandfather's death. I loved the chapters where the grandfather told the stories of the tiger's wife and the deathless man - just enough of a magical realism hint to keep me happy 😊

Our government wants us all to stay at home as much as possible for the coming weeks, so I‘m back to working at home. On the positive side, this gives me more time to read and it shows!

Cinfhen I feel your frustration, Barbara!!!! But glad you have lots of books to keep you occupied. I can‘t focus at all!!! 4y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I can imagine that. You are finally in the States waiting to see your family. You must be both excited and anxious I suppose! My life is so boring I can easily focus on a book 🤪😘 4y

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I'm back in the office 2-3 times a week and feeling the reduced reading time. The challenges this month are encouraging me to load up an audio book in the office when I'm doing some mindless activities, but I'm still getting stuck doing more than I should just because I'm physically there. 4y
BarbaraBB @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I know, I read a lot less when working in the office but 2/3 times a week sounds pretty good. Always working from home is tiresome too I think. Despite the reading of course 😇 4y

#ReadingEurope2020 🇷🇸
This book is a mash up of mythological stories about the tiger‘s wife and the deathless man and that of the Balkan today, still scarred by war. I preferred that last storyline, of Natalia growing up in #Serbia during and after the war. She becomes a doctor because her generation feels they need to express themselves, to make up for the past, the war, in which they lived seemingly untouched by it. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

BarbaraBB As a doctor volunteering for the UN in a village she is confronted with the past of her grandfather and that of former Yugoslavia. 4y

My #DoubleSpin for May is finished! @TheAromaofBooks

This one surprised me. At first I was bored and confused, but after a few chapters I really got into the story. I loved the mythology mixed in, and that there were several different stories happening at once as the main character searches for answers to her grandfather's death.

This also marks another off my #ReadingEurope2020. @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

BarbaraBB Interesting. For which country are you using it? 4y
Addison_Reads @BarbaraBB Serbia. It lists that as the author's country of birth. Technically the book is set in a fictionalized area that resembles Yugoslavia. 4y

It‘s been a day since I finished reading and I feel as if I‘m still in the grip of this novel. If you‘re looking for a plot, you‘ll find a very slim one, but what you will find is a beautifully written, richly detailed story of a grandfather‘s story of meeting a deathless man and a tiger‘s wife. You‘ll read of myths and superstitions. Finally, you‘ll read & remember the lovely story of returning an elephant to a zoo in the middle of the night.

Even though there weren‘t any concrete plot or strong characters, her skillful storytelling kept me going. All in all, I‘d say it‘s between a pick and so-so, leaning more towards a pick. If this is food, I‘d say it‘s very much an acquired taste. If you‘re one for dreamy, magical realism with vivid imagery and lyrical prose, you might enjoy this! I‘m excited to read her upcoming novel ‘Inland‘!

#RunningAcrossThinIceWithTigers #WinterWonderland Not only is there a tiger, but it even runs across ice at one point. The tiger appears in one of two apparently true stories the main character's grandfather regales her with as she grows up: 'the tiger's wife' and 'the deathless man', stories she remembers after his death. Magnificent- one of my favorites of the year- all must read, or I will wake this sleeping tiger and send her after you 😼

KarenUK I loved this book.... 💕 5y
Billypar @Cinfhen It is a unique approach to folklore, where most events seem based in fact and fairly recent memory, but the interpretation is tricky. And even though I liked the three extended back stories about characters who encountered the tiger's wife, I could see how those parts might drag. 5y
Billypar @batsy Ha- unintended consequences... She's not mine unfortunately, but I get jealous of all the #catsoflitsy posts, so I need to take advantage when I'm around one 😸 5y

“Past the aviary where the sharp-eared owls sleep,” they would walk to the moat where tigers loped, their “stripe-lashed shoulders rolling.” There she would listen, rapt, as her grandfather spoke of a girl he once knew who was known as the “tiger‘s wife.” Grandfather always carried in his pocket a copy of the “Jungle Book”. So many #wildbeasts ! But the strangest of all was the Tiger who loved a woman. #nofemmeber

"We drove through red-roofed villages that clung to the lip of the sea, past churches and horse pastures, past steep plains bright with purple bellflowers, past sunlit waterfalls that thrust out of the sheer rock-face above the road."

In an unnamed Balkan country, Natalia and her grandfather share a story of history and legend. It‘s strange, but I think I enjoyed the experience.

This is a hard one—I wanted to love it but found myself mostly enjoying it while wishing it spoke to me more. The writing is exquisite & while it feels like the story meanders, it all comes together. The highlight, & what ultimately makes this a pick, are the chapters about the encounters between the main character‘s grandfather & the “deathless man” (plus 1 more but no spoilers). I loved those chapters. A good if not entirely satisfying read.

A novel. A fable. Magic? Superstition? This book is a wonderful work of art! Obreht moves seamlessly between reality and superstition. The story is richly developed and masterfully written. I often felt as if I were looking at a painting rather than reading text. There is movement in the story, but it is so steeped in beautifully crafted detail, that the ultimate sensation is visual.
