Art of Racing in the Rain
Art of Racing in the Rain | Garth Stein
The New York Times bestseller, now available in paperback. A heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of a dog s efforts to hold together his family in the face of a divisive custody battle.Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver.Through Denny, Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn't simply about going fast. Using the techniques needed on the race track, one can successfully navigate all of life's ordeals. On the eve of his death, Enzo takes stock of his life, recalling all that he and his family have been through: the sacrifices Denny has made to succeed professionally; the unexpected loss of Eve, Denny's wife; the three-year battle over their daughter, Zoe, whose maternal grandparents pulled every string to gain custody. In the end, despite what he sees as his own limitations, Enzo comes through heroically to preserve the Swift family, holding in his heart the dream that Denny will become a racing champion with Zoe at his side. Having learned what it takes to be a compassionate and successful person, the wise canine can barely wait until his next lifetime, when he is sure he will return as a man.A heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope, The Art of Racing in the Rainis a beautifully crafted and captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life . . . as only a dog could tell it."

February tends to be a month that focuses on love, namely the romantic kind, so I thought I‘d give you some book recommendations that exemplify other types of love: https://youtu.be/lZ0nLusvFN4

#lovestories #notromantic #otherkindsoflove #bookstoreadinfebruary #bookrecommendations #love #somuchlove #booktube

EadieB @Butterflyamore Of the books you mentioned, I have read; Art of Racing in the Rain, Whisper Man and imaginary Friend. I‘m interested in reading A Monster Calls. An example of father/son love would be Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafron, love between two friends - The Air You Breathe by Frances dePontes Peebles. Between 2 brothers - The Unwilling by John Hart and between a dog and his 11 year old owner - Woof by Spencer Quinn. 1w
Butterflyamore @EadieB I hope that you enjoy A Monster Calls, if/when you read it. I haven‘t read any of those books, although I do have The Unwilling on my possible preorder list, based on your previous recommendation. I need to actually read one of his books soon so I can know for sure how I feel about him as an author! 1w

EadieB @Butterflyamore John Hart is an excellent author as I have read many reviews from his books. I have an audio of Iron House by him and can‘t wait to listen to it! I‘ll probably read A Monster Calls very soon too! You should read The Shadow of the Wind that is one of my all time favorite books! 1w
Butterflyamore @EadieB I added it to my list! 1w

Seattle Washington - Enzo is different from other dogs. He has acquired a nearly human soul by listening to the words of his master, Denny Swift, a race car driver. He helps Denny through the death of his wife, Eve, & custody battle over his daughter, Zoe. While dying, Enzo, knows he will return as a man. This is a heart-wrenching, funny & uplifting story of family, love, loyalty & hope. I really enjoyed listening to the audio & recommend it.

Andrew65 Still need to choose a #tearjerker. 3w
EadieB @Andrew65 Listening to The Art of Racing in the Rain for tearjerker and it's very good. 3w
gradcat @EadieB You go, Eadie! That‘s a lot of books!! I, too, have to choose a tearjerker, like @Andrew65 ... I‘ve yet to decide. 🤷🏽‍♀️ 3w
Andrew65 @EadieB Not heard of that one, will do some research. Also am I brave enough to do 3w
Andrew65 @gradcat If not Read it I recommend this book, had me in ugly tears! 3w
Andrew65 Also wondered about some more Kristin Hannah as the Buddy Read you led for The Great Alone had me in tears! 3w
EadieB @Andrew65 Me Before You is a very tearful read at the end. You will need to be brave to read it. 3w
EadieB @Andrew65 This is another tearjerker by Kristin Hannah. 3w
EadieB @Andrew65 My review of another tearjerker:
This book is a very sad and emotional read but an amazing story. The last part of the book had me in tears. I have never cried so hard as when I was reading this book. Hannah being able to evoke such emotions is a sign of her excellent writing skills. If you need a good cry then read this book. Do not read if you are prone to depression.
3w
Andrew65 @EadieB Thanks, just checked and my library has a copy. 😊👍 (edited) 3w
EadieB @Andrew65 Great! That's a good one for tearjerker! 3w
Andrew65 @EadieB Will Check Night Road our too, thanks fir the recommendations. 3w
EadieB @Andrew65 Between the two, I would pick Night Road. I gave Winter Garden 4 stars but Night Road got 5 stars. (edited) 3w
Andrew65 @EadieB Definitely sounds the way to go. 😊 I really enjoyed that Buddy Read. (edited) 3w
EadieB @Andrew65 It was a good one! I enjoyed it too! 3w

I have read a few books told by dogs this year. And I like it very very much. Enzo is an amazing dog with a human soul. I liked to listen to him talk about his life and his perspective of humans around him. Some chapters were a bit over dramatic for me. It is always the humans I least like in a book with animal characters. This one too, was amazing because of Enzo.
I also watched the movie adaption this year. Beautiful movie.

So many people have recommended this book. I was hoping for something similar to Watership Down, where the reader views the world through a dog's perspective. Instead the dog was too human and made bad jokes about being a dog. And I didn't buy the fact he learned everything from tv. I couldn't bring myself to finish it

Day 10:
The Art if Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein. Ok. Let's face it. This is a book about a dog. We ALL know how this is going to end. But even with that knowledge, this is such a sweet book about a dog's gift and you can't help but feel the love throughout.

Anything involving a dog always packs a gut punch. Dogs will always be too good for us and Enzo is no exception. They are smarter, more loving and more loyal than we could ever imagine. Excellent life lessons in this reread, one being "the car goes where the eyes go". Crying is mandatory.

If you want a feel good, make you cry, happy-sad book, this is the one. Fantastic. I had to read it before I see the movie, and I wasn't disappointed. Enzo tells Denny's story in a heartwrenching way, based on what he is able to learn from one sided phone conversations, people speaking secrets in his presence, and watching television. My heart hurt for Denny non-stop.

I find myself looking at my dog, Duke (pictured), wondering...

I DNF'd The Guest Book by Sarah Blake. It's the first time I didn't force myself to continue. But as the members of #MBC say, life is too short to read books you're not enjoying. The kicker is, if I could get through it, I'm sure I would love it.

I picked up my next library loan to start. The Art Of Racing In The Rain by Garth Stein. Hopefully it lives up to the hype.

A fairly strong book (for a dog) with a weak ending. If only life could be wrapped up so nicely in a big beautiful bone. If you want an unrealistic feel good story this is it. Maybe if I could actually find a dog like Enzo I wouldn‘t be so flip.

Nope.

I appreciate that people LOVE this book, and this is not the first time I have been in the minority. Clearly I am missing something.

First in case you don‘t already know, this is a book about a dying dog, Enzo, told from his perspective. He relives his life with his owner, which is also tragically sad.

Too much.

Not sure why this story would need to be told from Enzo‘s perspective? Dont understand the insight it provided to the story.

cj82487 Uve had friends say the same thing ab this one. Same goes for those movies from a dog's perspective it's just tooooo much 6mo
cj82487 I've ^^ not uve 🤦‍♀️ 6mo
KristenDuck @cj82487 I don‘t mind sad books but this one I was just like “come on....” and honestly it didn‘t really add anything to hear the story told by the dog. It was all about the owner‘s life. 6mo

I‘m going to be in the minority again...

Tonight I reached about the 75% marker with “The Art of Racing in the Rain,” and while I will certainly push myself to finish, I don‘t love it.

In fact, I don‘t even think I like it.

I will wait to post a full review when I am finished obviously but I just don‘t agree that this is the type of story that should have been narrated by a dog? Heavy much?

But anyway, look how cute my cats are with me!

Maybe it‘s because I‘ve been reading W. Bruce Cameron‘s books in the last few months, and I much prefer his voicing of dogs. Maybe it‘s that I think some of the reincarnation spirituality in this is bull. Maybe it‘s just timing. This was well-edited, I‘ll give it that. And it was a quick read. In the end, though, it was like getting a turkey burger when you were expecting a T-bone steak.

Admittedly, I saw the previews for the movie with Milo Ventimiglia that‘s coming out but my mom vouched for how good the story was. And we were all in agreement! The narrator was great and there was something interesting about it being from the dog‘s POV
